Microsoft mandating a "sharpness" filter on cross platform games?

So apparently the cross platform titles compared on Beyond3D demonstrate use of a sharpness filter on X1 titles, presumably due to their lower resolutions. Hopefully this isn't mandated as it destroys the quality and original intent of textures and art. Also X1 owners may want to turn their sharpness setting on their TV completely off (down to "0" (zero)), otherwise you will be superimposing a sharpness filter over another sharpness filter.

Wrong forum Yoy, but keep up the good work bashing MS!

But the sharpness in some X1 games isn't so bad. It makes many of their games have better and clearer textures than PS4's washed out textures.

Careful Intelli, you could even turn your TV sharpness filter up to max on those X1 games, but that's only if you want the BEST textures and a double dose of that clarity!

Yeah I see a added bright white to some of the 720p games shown...
This happens when the sharpness is to high...it is uncomfortable for me.

Yeah, I've seen a few screens where the sharpness looks very unnatural and not very pleasing to the eye.

Does it have something to do with the xbox one's upscaler?

Being concerned about PQ is sh*t? Sounds like the 1080p vs 720p isn't a big deal talk :smash:
Id rather it be talked about so MS can try and address it.

A sharpness mandate in game? I don't see how Microsoft could mandate such a thing.

But whatever. If I'm wrong shame on Microsoft I guess.

Well supposedly its actually the 720p games including exclusive titles...I think its the scaler maybe setting the X1 to 720p for 720p games would resolve this? Id like a reliable person to try and see then post the results...

If not ...That's why it needs to be talked about so they can try and address it.

dead rising 3 definetly doesnt look that bad in person. In fact, although I wont argue that some sort of sharpening is occuring on sub 1080p games, its not as apparent in person when you are gaming from normal distance. I put Killer Instinct on 720p and 1080p through the console, and while on 720p looked cleaner to a small degree, it was actually more blurry. I preferred the upscaled 1080p version, sharpened or not.

Is there any evidence that MS is "mandating" this, or is it just a choice that developers are making, or an automatic part of the upscaling process perhaps? I'm not a techie, so I'm asking from ignorance. I would question the wording in the title, if there is no evidence of a mandate.

These shots don't look bad to some people?.

The sharpening really needs to die, it seems like it is built into the scalar to make it seem like the colors 'pop' without any real effort to improve the IQ.

It seems to be built into the upscaling process for them, hence why Crytek went with there own upscaler and don't have it.

Are we talking about screenshots? If so who acres?

This. Watching the side-by-side comparison of the next-generation versions of Assassins Creed, for example, show both games looking virtually identical in motion, IMO. Of course, with screen shots, you can nit- and cherry-pick your qualms, but those "issues" don't typically manifest themselves when the game is in motion.

Microsft said something like graphics power isn't important or something like that. And now we see them rushing behind the scenes to make sure they aren't graphically inferior. lol

The Xbox upscaler automatically applies a sharpening filter to any game upscaled to 1080p. It adds artificial noise, makes jaggies worse, and can't be turned off at 1080p. It's a cheap trick to make up for res differences that ends up doing more harm than good. Ryse does its upscaling in-engine or it's allowed to bypass the filter, either way it doesn't have the effect.

Resolution "issues" are greater in motion, not less, because you can see the jaggies and mosaic patterns crawl across the screen. Relying on shoddy IGN youtube footage for comparisons is a bad idea.

Looks pretty bad, doesn't look next gen at all. Its a night and day difference on the PS4. http://i.imgur.com/NkU8TLu.jpg

MS is mandating all games get extra sharpness applied to them? That's news to me. I wonder which MS employee made the claim.

That claim is just as reliable as my buddy who said Sony is mandating all games get worse textures, washed out colours and borked 64 player Conquest in BF4 when X1's runs fine.

MS isn't "mandating" it per se, but the scaler automatically applies it to any upscaled games. Same difference.

It would be nice if people could turn it off if they don't like it. But I suppose that would make them "entitled whiners".

I've seen both in action, and COD on ps4 definitely looks like crap. Night and day? hahaha, even the current gen versions aren't that far off concerning ghosts, worse for sure yeah, but for a next gen title, its probably the ugliest game I've seen
