Two stories in the same day. GAF said 30-40% of Sucker Punch employees got let go.

‘NCAA Football’ And ‘Madden’ Development Team Reportedly Suffer Lay Offs By EA In Another Round Of Layoffs

The NCAA Football and Madden team reportedly suffer lay offs by EA in another round of layoffs. A meeting was held today at 2pm EST in which an undisclosed amount of employees at the EA Tiburon studio were given notice. The exact amount is still unknown but our sources have told us the layoffs have affected the entire NCAA team and that production of another NCAA title has been delayed indefinitely.

"SCEA can confirm a reduction in workforce has taken place at Sucker Punch Productions."Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves -- launched on PlayStation 2 way back in 2005. The studio then pivoted to the Infamous franchise, releasing the first game in that series on PlayStation 3 in 2009.

Unfortunate for Sucker Punch. 30-40% is a lot of people.

So I guess Sony is trying to say that Second Son is the only real game they want from them in this generation. That's not right. We know they have to have more projects for them.

It's weird how some SP employees got let go. Is it the normal lay-offs after a big project has been finished i.e. First Light releasing? Infamous sold pretty well.

Hearing about layoffs sucks. Especially when it comes to the gaming industry. I hope they get through it.

Must be s***ty, when one should be rejoiced after a game release, but instead you need to worry about layoff.

Not the type of profession for me, if this is the norm.

With EA Tiburon it's not really news, one of the worse place to work in the company I've heard. Don't know what it is about SPP tho...

It's really a shame. There's a lot of smart, passionate people in the game industry, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to go through endless cycles of layoffs over and over again every 2 years.

It would be so darn demoralizing and stressful knowing that you are likely going to be unemployed and relocated and have to search for a new job so often. The industry is going to lose a lot of talent.

Being in commercial building engineering/construction business, it's stressful enough knowing that in 10 years, we likely will get hit with another recession and our company and industry likely will get hit hard. But at least I have time to save, advance my career and build up my experience and value to my company over the next decade and hopefully make it over that hump. Game developers have to worry about this with every game release.

It's kind of a brutal way to earn a living and support your family.

Yeah, it's pretty much status quo these days. You ramp up your employee base as you near completion and then dump the non-essentials once your game and DLC is released.

Rinse and repeat.

You got to believe that most of these employees know the deal and probably were expecting it.

Not to mention that a lot of the "employees" were probably contractors. As in, they knew going in that it was a temporary position. Hopefully for them their contracting company finds them the next position quickly.

I think the days of keeping huge teams are over. Need an artiest or music guy you just contract them as you need them and don't bother to keep them on your team as a full team workers. Games take so much and so long to make now I'd guess it hard to give some team members work while parts of the game are being worked on and they're not needed at that time.
