Big Japanese company apparently. Sega also being thrown around....

Worth it for those IPs alone

would that include atlus and Sammy?
It would if they bought Sega as a whole. It would also include Creative Assembly, Relic entertainment and Amplitude studios. That's a alot of studios. But not a liekly purchase. Microsoft's M.O. as of late is to buy small to middling developers and build them up. I don't see them changing that strategy. Especially given how expensive a Sega purchase would be.

If they do eventually acquire someone else think smaller.

Tomonobu Itagaki should have been head of Japan on Xbox and things would have been very different. We had the best Japanese games like DOA and Ninja Gaiden and now we have nothing.
How many good games has he made without Team Ninja/Tecmo?

Have solid games released without him?
Oh yes they have.

He's free to go make games for whoever he wants.

I get the middle devs schtick but I don't think that's their main initiative. I think they're open to buy who ever makes sense. Price isn't the real issue here. They could go big and buy a huge Dev house - if it makes sense. Its just as probable in my opinion.

I like this part:

“We’ve moved from acquisition mode to execution mode,” Spencer continued. “[We are] sitting here with 15 plus studios working on games. But it’s not about a logo parade, or ‘look at who we acquired this week’, but really about what games [the studios] are going to go build.
MS continues to beat the GAMES GAMES GAMES drum. Their Xbox Game Studios 2020 release schedule looks to be record breaking.

MS should buy From Soft and Platinum.
Instant Japanese credibility.
This would also stop Sony from possibly buying them out. They already got Insomniac which already had a Great relationship with Sony.
If Sony buys Platinum or From Soft it would be a huge blow to Xbox.

MS blew it during the 360 Gen when they let Bioware get bought out by EA. They lost Xbox Pillar franchises such as Mass Effect and Jade empire. Games MSGS fully funded and took on the financial risk to develop the then new ip.

Not getting them while they developed Mass Effect, with the Bioware team the way they were, was indeed a colossal failure on MS's part.

Platinum just got an investment from Tenacent so if anyone is going to buy them its them.

Not sure how it would be a blow to Xbox if Sony had them though

Kayima said he was still open to working with Xbox, Phil could probably lay down some money charm with his new position.

I agree with eVo7 . Platinum Games is out unless they hit dire straits and have to choose MS or closing their doors. From Software is interesting but as it is part of a larger corporation, MS must be really willing to shell out some money to pry it from the Kadokawa Corporation .

I agree MS should have gotten Bioware when they were able. The IPs alone would be worth the purchase. However given Bioware's leadership or lack thereof, I'm not sure the studio would have fared any better under a then Balmer lead MS.

A good compromise in my mind would be for MS to buy the Mass Effect or Dragon Age IP from EA similar to how they bought Gears from Epic.
