Netflix really wants to get into video games - New AAA Game And Joseph Staten Joins

Netflix is reportedly searching for an executive to head up an expansion into video games, according to a report published Friday by The Information. The report suggests Netflix has approached multiple “veteran game industry executives” regarding the position, which would expand its efforts in video games.

The Information reported that Netflix is considering a “bundle” of games available via a subscription, like Apple Arcade; the Apple bundle launched in 2019 with a number of exclusive (and timed exclusive) games, available for $4.99 a month. Apple has continued to support the platform by adding new games at a pretty consistent pace.

A Netflix spokesperson told Polygon the company is “excited to do more with interactive entertainment.” The full statement is available below.

The streaming platform has experimented with interactive video experiences and video games in the past — in 2018, it published Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a Choose Your Own Adventure-style movie, followed by a similarly interactive experience in 2020 for an Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode. That’s on top of its experience producing series based off video game properties, like Dota, Castlevania, and The Witcher and its spinoffs, as well as upcoming shows based on Magic: The Gathering, Sonic the Hedgehog, and League of Legends.

Netflix has also produced games before — with third-party developers — based off its Stranger Things series: a Stranger Things mobile game and Stranger Things 3: The Game.

Uh oh a brand with brand power.

They should step into VR, but stay out of hardware. Maybe make a secondary App launcher that runs on existing platforms the way their movie App does.

I'm thinking Netflix VR Lounge and especially Theater that is of course paired to all Netflix video content. Make it easy to join family or friends watching shows. ( Watching IRL is still important, but this would be nice for long distance meetups or watch parties ). They might have the rights to make Avatars from their shows.

Nefflix might also be in a prime spot to offer 'Fitness Games' maybe cross promoting with existing content like exercise education videos.

Honestly, I've often wondered if the idea of Walking Tour videos could updated with fictional locations. People publish these on YouTube just walking with steadycam in cool tourism locations. Sometimes I watch these while on treadmill. Imagine a Cyberpunk stroll synced for speed with a pedometer. This doesn't have to be a Quest or something, but on a phone or preferably Tablet or Smart TV.

They also had a choose your own adventure type thing for an episode of Captain Underpants which the 10 year old loved. It's a pretty cool thing when done right.

If they put the kind of money behind it like they did with their original content, they might become the netflix of gamepass. It'll take them a while to build up a stable of studios if they're going to supply their own content, though. They certainly can't do worse than Stadia.

I'd be curious if Netflix could either make a Rhythm of their own for VR similar to Beat Saber or Synth Riders, except having the use of all their show soundtracks.

Or.... a simpler option might be to partner with an existing game adding Netflix branded content.

IMO Synth Riders devs are crafting some amazing theme stages for specific DLC songs like Algorithms from MUSE. It's hard to convey how trippy this is from watching a video clip.

So.... for example they could do a stage themed on the Stranger Things theme song which I think is still kind of popular. The only thing issue is that track is a bit to chill and needs more nots, but they could include a remix to spice it up. A rhythm game staged game based on CASTLEVANIA would be badass.

Maybe deals could even be reached on the anime content like Naruto or Attack on Titan which are not really owned by Netflix but maybe they could partnet with Funimation or whoever ultimately controls the show.

Netflix Inc., marking its first big move beyond TV shows and films, is planning an expansion into video games and has hired a former Electronic Arts Inc. and Facebook Inc. executive to lead the effort, Bloomberg News reports.

Mike Verdu will join Netflix as vice president of game development, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters, the company said on Wednesday. Verdu was previously Facebook’s vice president in charge of working with developers to bring games and other content to Oculus virtual-reality headsets.

I don't see an issue, competition is good. We know when a company become a monoply, their tails will be revealed.

By all means give it a go but I really don't think the demand is there for streaming games like this. If you're a gamer you're going to have something to game on. So who is aimed at? Casuals? :txbconfused:

Casuals are gamers to.

This isn't really any different to Xbox's Xcloud and mobile device streaming.

You know what I mean though. Look at the disaster that Stadia is. And that's coming from a company who are actually profitable and can take the hit on revenue. Netflix is still in the red as far as I'm aware and thats just mindboggling considering what they have become. Who are they aiming this at? There is no way they are going to pull gamers like ourselves away from their preferred device. And we're the ones that spend the big money. It just seems like a crazy move to me.

And then on top of that they have someone from EA to run it?

So, Netflix I’d the Tesla of the streaming world?

I probably won't use it, just like I don't use XCloud, but this is a welcome addition. I'll be watching from a distance, and wish them success.

Stadia is a disaster because it targets us. Netflix has a big advantage thanks to its massive & diverse subscription base.

Netflix is currently working on a game streaming service called N Game. The development runs under the code name Project Shark. The first indications of this were provided by images that appeared in the IOS Netflix app . On these you can see the logo “N Game”, the drawing of a shark, Playstation 5 controller and the cover of the Sony exclusive title “Ghost of Tsushima”. The icons of the DualSense controller and the Ghost of Tsushima cover suggest that Netflix could have entered into a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment for the new service. This partnership could also explain why Sony had rejected Microsoft's offer several times in the past to bring the Game Pass to Playstation.

A report by the publication “ TheVerge ” this week also confirms the work on the gaming service. Accordingly, Netflix has hired Mike Verdu to head the new gaming division as Vice President. Verdu previously served as an executive for EA mobile, Zynga and Facebook | Oculus. It also says that Netflix would like to offer a package similar to Xbox with the Game Pass with the new service. According to Bloomberg, N Game could expand the streaming platform's offerings as early as next year and the games could be offered directly in an overall package alongside films, documentaries and series.

An announcement of the service is still pending. The possible partnership with Sony should initially be viewed as speculation.

Watched some video on your that quoted the article that gaming will be included with your membership, for free. They didn’t go into the details, but if it’s free it sounds like they may be pay devs like Spotify pays artist per play/usage of a song (I’m guessing)

Isn't that how MS does Gamepass.

I still think Netflix DLC in existing game platforms could have been easy to try. Such as Beat Saber or other rythm beat games having music and stages themed on Netflix Original Shows.

From what a vaguely remember from interviews is that they get paid a lump sum for the game and each time it’s downloaded. Other factors like say one release or exclusivity would and time period on GP effect the former.

Stadia is seems to follow the Spotify method though
