Nintendo announced new takes on 3DS hardware today.

Nintendo’s “New Nintendo 3DS” and “New Nintendo 3DS XL” were announced today.

The new takes on the handheld hardware will feature coloured face buttons and new ZR and LR buttons.

A new camera control nub is to be included above the face buttons, and the power button, card inserts and stylus will move to the bottom of the device.

The new models will be able to connect to Nintendo’s upcoming Amiibo figurines.

The hardware’s workings have been up-powered, apparently cutting down on loading times. 3D functionality has been reworked to reduce blur.

The New 3DS will cost for 16,000 yen (£93) and the New 3DS XL will sell for for 18,800 yen (£109). They’re out in Japan on October 11. There’s no western release date as yet, but Eurogamer’s reporting they won’t head to Europe until 2015.

Beloved Wii RPG Xenoblade Chronicles Coming Exclusively to the New 3DS

Monolith Soft's 2010 open-world RPG is going portable.

The game will be utilizing the freshly announced 3DS model's upgraded hardware, according to Nintendo, which means it will not be playable on current 3DS consoles.

You can watch the trailer above. Xenoblade Chronicles for the New 3DS will be out in Japan next year, with no word yet on whether it will be coming to the West.

Pretty cool. I like the colored buttons on the white one.

With all the creativity at Nintendo though you'd think they could come up with a better name than just sticking "New" in front of it though, lol.

Nintendo should really get some new UI designers, the UI on the 3ds/2ds etc is just downright awful and the screen are so bad. I am surprised they sell so well, especially now that people are used to high resolution tablets and phones

I think it might be them not wanting to make people think this is a whole new handheld console or whatever.

Pretty cool but disappointed to read Xenoblade is only on the new stuff. Why? To push for sales on whats really just a new design? Upgraded hardware it says that allows faster load times, but does it actually improve graphics at all? Sure if I didn't have a 3DS already I'd be interested but not going to spend the money on this for very little upgrades. If it was more in line with a Wii U hardware but portable then sure.

Yeah I agree. That's kind of shady making it exclusive to the new model

I still remember them saying they would never put a second analogue stick on there, and now they do. Oh well, I'll give my old 3DS XL to my Sister and get this one instead :).

Can't stay mad at Nintendo :).

Just make sure to transfer your digital games first if you have any.

Thanks for the tip. I don't have any though, outside of some Mii stuff that I tried out.

But I keep thinking we should make a tutorial/step plan for this. And post it as a sticky on the forum. I'm not a big fan of digital distribution myself, exactly for these reasons, so I'll be all for making the process easier. Problem is the "NEW 3DS XL" (Seriously Nintendo work on your naming, Super 3DS would have worked so much better considering the colour scheme of the buttons :D), won't be out here in Norway or the Netherlands in quite some time.

So I don't think I can help there.

Nintendo Unveils New Nintendo 3DS XL Designs

Nintendo announced three new Nintendo 3DS XL designs at the GameStop EXPO in Anaheim, California today that will inevitably cause current 3DS XL owners to look at their systems in disgust. Not only is the company bringing something for Super Smash Bros. fans, but also those eager to play Persona Q. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a new 3DS XL sporting a the classic NES design, because Nintendo knows how to reignite old loves.

The Super Smash Bros. 3DS design will come in two variants – Red and Blue – with both covers featuring a number of recognizable characters from the game’s roster, including Link, Little Mac and Pikachu. Due out on September 19th to prepare for Super Smash Bros. 3DS’ October 3rd launch, the new handheld will retail for $199.99. Sadly, a copy of the game is not included.

The GameStop exclusive Persona Q 3DS XL (see below) features the new, unique art style of Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, complete with a cover that resembles the tome used to enter the game’s Velvet Room. Like the aforementioned Smash Bros. 3DS XL, this will also retail for $199.99. However, a specific release date was not given.
