Nintendo has shut down online services for Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi.

As of today (May 20), certain functionality offered through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is no longer accessible.

The discontinued features include online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, DS and DSi titles.

The affected games can still be played in offline mode and the systems' online marketplaces are still available.

Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games are unaffected by the move, but online features on titles from last-generation consoles are inaccessible when played on the latest devices.

Nintendo is apparently preparing to unveil a brand-new 3DS project at E3 next month.

Perhaps this will cause some of the Wii stragglers to jump on the WiiU train? Hopefully.

I hardly play online on Wii, so not an issue for me. Seems like a lot of online games are being killed lately. Shame. :(

This is one of the reasons I really dislike central organised matchmaking services. When they turn it off nobody can really play the game any more online unless people use tunnelling software. I mean EA even does it to an extreme to force people to buy a new game each year.

I mean the original Unreal Tournament is still going strong, that really is great to play still :). I kind of like it when I can still play old games like that online :).

I remember the sad day MS stopped supporting the original Xbox. Nintendo online fans have my sincere sympathy. To be Dreamcast adrift is a terrible feeling.

Oh I hated that! I really loved to play the Conkers Remake Online and than these nitwits stop a game that is just sooo much fun to play :p

Loved the simplicity and blissful anonymity in Conker; you just jumped in and played. Seems like online culture has become corrupted over the last few years. It's been ruined by social network sophistication.

Oh Definitely, it puts all the control in the publishers hands and they hardly do anything to help out harassment. Infact there is less crap going on in UT when a person is a beginner than in MOBA games. It feels like facebook + multiplayer = same crap ;).
