There is a universe to explore. Every planet and every star-system in the game is created procedurally, but they all make sense and have ecology. Once they are discovered by one player, they exist for everyone else, and so the act of discovery is also an act of creation. Having said that, according to Murray, players can make significant changes to the places that they visit that endure for everyone else. Make of that what you will.

That sounds awesome

Thanks for posting this. When I was watching the VGX show I didn't understand the hype behind it. The show conked out for me during the interview. All I saw was most of the trailer and I couldn't figure out why everyone was so hyped, like Ketto. Reading that, now I understand.

Saw this on a Eurogamer preview
Speaking of cliches, have a go at this one. "So if you were stood on a mountain and you can see a tree three miles away you can go and you can walk and you can see that tree and what's under it," Murray tells me. "But also if you look into the sky and you see that classic science fiction crescent planet on the horizon, you can go there as well. And if you see a star that's in the sky, given enough time you can go and look at that as well. You can look at the night sky and all of those stars are actually real things, they are real places, and you can have visited some of them but not visited others. Grant [Duncan, the art director] said it the other day. 'Is this the first game that doesn't have a skybox?' It's such a weird thing, it's such a techie thing, but that should be our opener: the first game with no skybox."

So how will you orientate yourself in such a massive, bewildering place? In truth, it might come fairly naturally - for starters, you won't be alone. Everyone who plays No Man's Sky will begin the adventure on their own planet at the edge of a shared galaxy. For most people, the obvious hook will be to carve a path to the centre of the galaxy where there will be something waiting for them. Along the way, you'll discover that this universe has rules, and you'll have to work together with other players - other frontiersmen - to find out how the place fits together and how it all works. You'll be building from scratch, too. When you initially load up the galaxy map, all the systems and planets are there, but nothing's labeled. Filling in the blanks is up to you - up to everyone.

"The universe as such will be a really dangerous place for you," he continues. "It will start out not so dangerous, but as you try to journey to the centre of the galaxy, things will mutate a lot more and will make your gameplay experience much more dangerous. Undertaking that trip will require lots of preparation. It will require you to, without going into too much detail, build up your character, build up your ship. I don't know how much I want to say about how you go about doing that, but you will have to co-operate with other people to make that journey. You will feel very vulnerable in this universe, and not necessarily empowered, but you will have the ability to travel great distances very fast and you have a lot of freedom." He pauses for a second, considering things. "A lot of freedom but maybe not masses of power."

The speculation on neogaf is it is coming to ps4 and pc, something about them being on a ps4 developers list and not on the id@xbox list and some tweet bu some guy from Sony. If this isnt on the One I will be irritated but plan on getting a ps4 anyway

I had shut off the VGX stream before this, and wow, I am excited. Hopefully the developers don't come down with Molyneux Syndrome, because this really looks like the type of stuff I used to do back in the day (or, more precisely, a week and a half before the day) while playing Starflight.

If this game delivers on its promise it could probably be my all time favorite game. Don't care if its a ps4 exclusive or cross platform. I'm getting this no matter what.

When I first saw this trailer, I didn't know what to expect but after reading more into it, it sounds pretty cool. So it's online only I presume since the universe would be explored as an online community.

And which platforms again?

PC and 'a next gen console' is all they said. My money would be that console is ps4. Exact details are to follow.

Sounds interesting. Only a 4-person dev team, but experienced guys, from what I hear. I suppose they might've farmed out some of the work.

Hopefully they take their sweet time with this as it could end up a masterpiece. Something that down the road a few years can be bought out by Activision to be milked to death every year.

I wouldn't put any worth into that until there is actual conformation. Going by GAF sentiment, every indie game is destined to be only on PS4 rather than Xbox. And even when there is conformation, indie studios are pretty greedy so there's a good chance the other platform(s) may get it later.

From the sounds of it they could take their time with it. If the worlds are there to be discovered, once discovered by one, there for all and they want to emphasis a group effort to find/form(?) worlds it sounds like they can have the core "outer worlds" ready to go for launch. Then continue to work on the "inner worlds" and continually release their universe. This game sounds awesome, like others have said, if done right this could be a go to game for years.

Getting this game regardless of what system it comes too. If it's just PS4 and PC then I'll get in on PC.

This concept has a lot of potential.

Game of the decade ????!!! sounds like what I wanted Mass Effect to be !

My concern is that it turns out to be one of those "Well, it sure sounded great on paper" games. The concept gets your imagination going, but whether the actual game will match the expectations ...

Actually they are using procedural generation to create everything so no individual worlds are being created as static content.

Exactly. But one can hope.

God, I really hope it doesn't turn out to be one of those with the developers having a dose of Molyneux-ism.

It's being used to create everything in the game?
Apparently.

If the presentation is to be believed, every planet and eco system in the game will be created using procedural generation. That's why there is some skepticism.

Really, really interested in this game. I've been waiting for a 1st person shooter game that you can fly a ship, I was expecting Destiny to be more like this concept.

I hope it releases on Xbox One, but if it's PS4 only and lives up to its promise, it might sway me to purchase one.

Don't get beat to the punch on this one, MS!

Okay then. I thought they were just gonna use it for each of the worlds themselves. Hopefully it turns out as good as it sounds then, really looking forward to it.

You and me both!

What's their experience outside of the platforming game the company created?

I don't trust Indie devs with anything so ambicious myself.

I'd set my expectation phaser to "vapor ware that eventually has a bug ridden disappointing release" and go from there.

And there is nothing in that I could argue with either. I just prefer not to be so cynical. If they don't deliver it will be very disappointing. But I'm going to hope do.

Yeah I'm a "tempered expectations" kinda guy.

It does sound cool, and while the procedural generation idea has it's own issues it is also precisely why they could creat such a vast world with a few people. The code generates the content.

It usually is a recipe for boredom though and the "ambitious" aspect really just comes with making it fun and not reparative.

Their description sounds almost taken word for word from Derek Smart. Anyone remember that guy? One of the first gaming personalities to have a public meltdown, created some of the internets earliest memes.

He used to post at Ve3d.com and and I got into some hilarious flame wars.

It'll be a surprise if they can deliver exactly what they have advertised to be honest. Even with procedural generation, it would be an amazing feat for 4 developers to bring this to fruition. Its possible they developed some priority awesomeness that will help them. We'll just have to wait and see what comes next.
Don't remember Derek Smart. *heads to Google*

"Sometimes when I get online, and it's quiet, and I see something that attracts my attention, I'll post just to piss these guys off. That's why I do it. Because I'm in a good mood that day, I go in there and I start trouble."

Lol
