I’m leaving Mojang

September 15th, 2014

I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.

A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.

I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I tweeted this in frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I didn’t have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.

As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.

Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.

I’m aware this goes against a lot of what I’ve said in public. I have no good response to that. I’m also aware a lot of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I’m not. I’m a person, and I’m right there struggling with you.

I love you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.

It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity.

It might not be about the money, but I'm sure it helps.

All three original owners have left.

The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

I wonder if they were forced out.

Living the dream. Made an awesome product, got his 2bil, got out.

Now he has all the time in the world to listen to that ultra rare Aphex Twin record he bought for a whooping 46 thousand dollars a couple of months ago...

Caustic Window up in this bitch!

Not sure why he's going to be a labeled a sellout. If anything he's been consistent.

That's taking it too literally. Hes just sticking it to the man, right? Twp billion is an outrageous offer none will take, right?

Three owners left. Game Lead is there to stay along with the rest of the team. Great news for sure.

Reminds of Jerry Seinfeld and why he never even tried to re-produce the success of the show or go back to it somehow. It's all about making your money when you can and jumping the ship on a high note. Guy is essentially retired and can do whatever he wants now. Kudos to him and having the opportunity to play the game and winning it in as high a fashion as possible. That said, this just about confirms the $2 billion buyout of Mojang huh?

$2.5 billion. ;)

There's always the vocal minority that cries "sellout" for "indies" in any medium that finally make some money, especially when it comes from big corporate.
I say more power to him, he does what he's passionate about, seems to stay pretty true to his vision and because of it has financial security.

If I was a indie dev and got a offer of 2.5 billion(with me getting a large cut of course :p ) Id make that deal. That's not a sellout its smart.

s*** if I were those guys I'd buy an island and retire. They must be worth insane bank by now all from one game that is pretty impressive.

Holy s*** them f***ers is rich. Man good for them.

MS must think Minecrift will keep bring in insane money to buy it for that much. I've yet to really try the game. I can't see the company without the names of the founders doing that well again. Were they the ones who really designed the game and had the vision for it or are team members lift who helped with that?

Well apparently the lead developer is still around, so that's at least promising.

C'mon you can sniff coke off a NASDAQs' ass for the rest of your life with that kind of money...

If I was an inde dev and got a multimillion dollar offer I'd sell. Can't get mad at his come up.

Anyone who says they're sell outs or anything bad is just a dumb son of a bitch. any normal person would so called sell out for that type of money. s*** someone offer me money now I was born ready to sell out.

Notch is on record many times saying he does not like running a huge company he just wants to make games and program. I don't blame him calling it a day. Running a company that size now worth that much must be a pain unless you love is well running a company every single day and all the BS that goes with it.

He sounds like a humble guy who was just in over his head. Obviously he wanted Minecraft to be a success and wouldn't say no to the money. But some people like their privacy and it sounds like he didn't care for the fame.

I think most people understand that it might be a good idea to sell for 2,5 billion dollar. :)
But with his history with regards to his outcry against the Oculus-sellout to corporate facebook - it's kind of funny how he sells his own company out to Microsoft Corporation.. :p

Anyone following his twitter for the past long while shouldn't be surprised by this.

Glad to see some positive gaming news for once.

Did you read his blog post on that? My take was that he just had took specific issue with facebook in general.

Notch is full of it. He sold out, if it wasn't about the money he would of made the game open source for the modding community. Notch has always been a greedy person and that's never been a secret. He even states in the letter what he is saying goes against what he said in the past. SMH lol.
