Yo guys! just wondered if i could pick some brains please?
my son wants a really good gaming desktop for his birthday and i am going to buy him one, but i want it to be powerful so can run the latest games plus upcoming titles also are modern PC's upgradable, so can add more RAM, better GFX card etc please?

I used to be a PC gamer back in late 90's but then got more into console gaming and i am a bit out of the loop.

was looking at a premade system like this -

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/compu...phoenix-860-090na-gaming-pc-10138416-pdt.html

or is it best building from scratch please?

thanks for any help please :)

Most will say build it yourself but if the parts total the same as someone else building it then...id have them do it and get that warranty and great cabling.

Read through this thread for a amazing deal(which is basically what you posted).... I snagged it up for my son (i took the 980ti out of it) http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1198580

The one thing I'll add (though Val's answer is pretty much spot on) is that you may want to consider building it as a project with your son if he's old enough to do so. I've really only built two PCs, both seven or eight years back, one which my wife is using and one for her parents, but I look forward some day to building one with my soon-to-be eleven year old, at least if he ever reaches the stage where he needs something more than a laptop that'll play browser games and let him watch people play games on youtube. Give a kid a PC and he'll game for days, teach a kid how to build a PC and he'll troll forums his whole life. :)

Thanks for the replies guys!! i am in the UK btw. So the one i posted was good please?

Also could my son hook up 2 monitors please? it has one HDMI and 3 display ports and the monitors i wanna get him have display port so will the quality be ok?

is it best to connect via HDMI, display port or DVI please? whats the best quality?

also could i upgrade this system? is there any PC's where you can upgrade the GFX card etc please?

Sorry as i aint bought a PC for a longggggggg time....

Looks like a good system to me. Pretty much top of the line processor and video card. I believe DisplayPort is just as good as HDMI in terms of quality, so you would be good doing two monitors. You'll want to stick with either HDMI or DisplayPort and not DVI.

Let me add the only thing I would question is power supply. 500W seems low for a 980ti. I'm not sure what is the recommended for it but if possible to upgrade that it may be worth it in the long run. Even if it is something you do on your own later. Big fan of Corsair power supplies as they are very environmental friendly and are modular.

It runs fine with the 500 watt and now they offer a larger option.
I recommend saving money and going with 16 gb of ram,A 250 gb(or higher) SSD for the OS and a 1+ TB HDD for storage.

No, I would wait for GTX 1080. Comes out in a few weeks. Just be patient, you'll thank me later.
ok thanks! its for my sons birthday which isn't until july, so we can wait! Are a lot of the newer PC's upgradable please? I haven't bought a PC for years (Mac user) so i am out of the loop, can i switch out vfx cards etc please? and thanks for replying!

Yes it will be upgradable. With the processor you will be getting though it's going to be a looong time before anything but the video card or extra RAM needs to be upgraded.

Do not get a Titan X, Pascal comes out at the end of the month, both GTX 1070 and 1080 are faster than Titan X for a fraction of the price. Also I wouldn't get Haswell-E either, Broadwell-E is also just right around the corner.

Agree with all of this.

However even if he does opt to go X99 the current (or at least higher end motherboards) will be supporting Broadwell-E via a bios update.
That being said X99 is only for extreme editing of videos/and the extra lanes afforded by the Hexacore/Octocore CPUs.

If he has no need for that X99 is a waste IMHO.

re the processor, do you mean the Intel Core i7 Haswell-E please?
Others would know more about current or upcoming processors, but I think the 6700k that you originally posted is one of, if not the top processor, that Intel has out right now. But with the Broadwell-E coming out soon it may be worth holding off for depending on when it releases. Either way both will be good for a long time.

So guys, soon its my sons bday, and because he wants a PC gaming desktop, i was going to get the HP Envy Phoenix 860-009na, which seems great, but would any of you recommend (UK) custom PC gaming sites like overclocks, chill blast, mesh etc
Would i be best getting a custom built PC or just go with a standard made one like the HP or ASUS etc which all seem to be very good.
Any advice would be great, thank you.
