This is a very old long running cult film series that creator Don Coscarelli(Bubba Ho-Tep, John Dies at the End) keeps poking at and with this 5th film, the story will finally have closure.

I've always found the bizarre ideas in this movie like the Tall Man or the killer brain drill orbs fascinating for some reason, despite it sometimes having corny special effects or some cheesy acting. Maybe it just leaves me wondering what the hell it's all about with the Tall Man shrinking corpses down to dwarf size, sending them back to his dimension, why he bleeds honey mustard, and inserting brain into flying killer spheres.

Entertainment Weekly reports today that Phantasm: Ravager, which promises to give closure to the long-running franchise, will be released into theaters and on Digital HD come October 7th. In addition, the J.J. Abrams-supervised 4K restoration of the original Phantasm will screen in cinemas on September 24th. But that’s not all. -

Per EW, “Phantasm: Remastered and HD restorations of both 1994’s Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead and 1994’s Phantasm IV: Oblivion will also be released on cable and digital platforms that day (although plans aren’t finalized, EW has been told 1988’s Phantasm II will be available to view, as well). Later in the year, the films will be released individually on Blu-ray and DVD as well as in a collector’s edition set.”

The Phantasm films are iconic, and Well Go is ecstatic to have them,” said Dylan Marchetti, SVP of Well Go USA Entertainment. “We get to bring a classic to a whole new audience with Phantasm: Remastered, and with Phantasm: Ravager we get to bring the die-hard fans — of which I am one — the closure they’ve been waiting for. This is the kind of deal that every distributor dreams of doing, and when you get to do it with a true independent like Don, well, that’s just the extra cherry on the sundae.”

Phantasm: Ravager features Reggie Bannister in his decades-long pursuit of the malevolent Tall Man, and it forces him to finally confront the mysteries at the heart of the Phantasm saga. The entire original cast is back, including Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and the late Angus Scrimm, along with some great new characters. - See more at: http://ihorror.com/phantasm-ravager-release-date-finally-announced/#sthash.mjB91sCa.dpuf

I like horror films, but I've never seen a Phantasm.

I stumbled across it on Cable TV one time and I'm like WTF is this? Then I keep watching still like WTF is this?

Tall dude raids graves, creates army of undead corpses shrunk down into dwarf size? Apparently, this is because they're sent back to Dimension X or I dunno wut where the gravity is high.

The Tall Man does this until the place becomes a ghost town, then drives off in his hearse to another town to do it again.

Sweet.

I'm old enough to remember the original from my childhood.

The sequels all kind of sucked. But hopefully this can reignite the creepiness of the original.

Yeah the sequels were hit and miss or just plain confusing. I think Phantasm 4 was the one that tried to tease some of the Tall Man's origin.

I guess this series has enough random ideas like this to keep me curious. It's like he was originally a friendly steampunk scientist wanting to understand Death until he stepped through the portal he created to f*** knows where.

But yeah, I have to admit the series is peppered with dumb cheesy ideas.

My favorite horror series. JJ Abrams and Coscarelli just did a 4K restoration of the original. I'm going to see that in a theatre in PA (3.5 hour drive but will be worth it) and then a bluray box set later this year, can't wait.

I watched some of them. Enough to be happy to see another one coming.

I love that this director still gets it. John Dies at the End was really original and Bubba Ho-Tep was off the charts. One of the best Bruce Campbell flicks out there!

I wish John Carpenter had never became so bad, as he was such a genius. Starting with Escape From LA, it was kind of like how Mr. Lucas just said "hey, these movies were always supposed to be campy and melodramatic". NO, you don't even get why your films are so great! You can't just overtly try to make them bad like that. Mr. Coscarelli definitely still gets it. He also doesn't mind making movies for a small audience. You can't make a cult film, if it is aimed at the masses. In fact, the word "cult" sort of means that it automatically can't be both. George Romero even doesn't quite get what it is that he created for the zombie genre. He bitches about all of them, then puts out mediocre-to-crappy ones of his own, while talking about them like they are some kind of poetry. He craps on Walking Dead without even bothering to watch them in the first place. I think that the difference with Mr. Coscarelli over all those other guys, is he actually still likes the genre he had a part in creating. There is a reason he casted Bruce Campbell as an old Elvis. I'd bet that he probably even made the roll up around him. That kind of says something.

I agree Coscarelli is awesome. This last chapter however is the only one not directed by him, David Hartman directed. Don was heavily involved though so I think this will be great.

Interesting. Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, looks like he co-wrote and produced instead. Also, the director David Hartman looks to have only directed a smattering of kids shows that range from a lot of Winnie the Pooh to recent Transformers cartoons. Too funny.

It also seems that a "Phantasm Remastered" is on the way soon to small theaters. Interesting tidbit:
Phantasm: Remastered is a 4K digital restoration of the 1979 film, which was supervised by Coscarelli and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot company. Abrams is a huge fan of the series and named Gwendoline Christie’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens character Captain Phasma after the franchise.

“He saw the movie when he was a kid and it stuck with him,” Coscarelli told EW last year. “I first met him about 15 years ago. He was doing Felicity, and he called me out of the blue, and told me he was a fan. Then, I introduced him to Angus Scrimm, and he put him into the Alias TV series in a recurring role. [The restoration] came about because he wanted to show Phantasm at Bad Robot. I told him, ‘Well, the prints are really bad.’ He generously offered to help create a restoration. Obviously that’s an offer we couldn’t refuse.”

Yeah I bought my ticket to Phantasm Remastered the end of July. I'm driving 3 hours to PA to see it, of course it later was announced to be playing here in Buffalo. I figure the road trip will be fun though and I get to eat at a Chick Fil A on the way.

Phantasm bluray set is also coming out this year.

Phantasm stands alone on it's own pedestal of horror awesomeness. Campy yet scary and plenty to talk about after the curtain falls. Day 1 on everything new that comes out for the series. :bang:

That is awesome dude.

Makes me think how cool a Phantasm game would be.

(Oddly my wife's all time favorite video game is Phantasmagoria. Not related in any way other than sounding similar and of the horror genre).

Finally watched this on On-Demand.

The series continues to be a little cheesy, but then gets serious and offers low budget surrealism leaving Reggie and the audience confused.

The final film decides to also be weirdly ambiguous up until the end leaving an ending widely open to interpretation. I liked seeing the final film, but still a little frustrated that really no loose ends are tied up and really no answers after all this time about what the Tall Man was. I'm not sure if this is partly because the actor playing the Tall Man Angus Scrimm became ill and passed away, so maybe they had to adjust the film and the plot.
