Project CARS Dev: PS4 Single Core Speed Slower Than High-End PC, Splitting Renderer Challenging

It might not be more powerful or on par even with PCs back then, but definitely closer than what the ps4 is now
How? The HD 7970 GPU flagship is 3.79 Tflops. The PS4 is 1.8Tflops. Meaning it is roughly half the power of the flagship just as the Xenos was to the 7800GTX.

Isn't there a GPU more powerful than that 3.79 already? No matter. CPU is the real weakpoint of the ps4, its been pointed out many times.

I'll agree that this Gen is closer to PC architecture than any previous Gen...

but that's where the similarities end... Both systems contain highly customized proprietary SoCs... With custom CPU/GPU variants from those readily available on the market....

show me where you can buy these components on the open market to assemble into a "standard" PC....

then.... Show me where you can purchase the base/core OS sub systems that you'd run a game on ...

this first Gen/wave of (rushed to market) release games are straight ports with maybe a tweak or extra effect thrown in just because it was easy to do with minimal impact to the end product (i.e. The lighting effects and slight differences in NFS:Rivals)....

we've yet to see games developed purely targeting ONLY these platforms and taking advantage of the full capabilities of either....

Well you can find most of them in the Kabini/Temash AMD APU's (which contain 4 jaguar cores and a number of GCN cores). Outside of the eSRAM / audio processors / GDDR5 / customisations to GCN. Its pretty much completely off the shelf hardware.

The CPU truly is the weakest link. 2.0GHz AMD? It might as well by a high-powered tablet imo. The only real good thing about the PS4 is that it's Sony's first console to not be completely gimped on the RAM capacity. 8GB will do a lot of good.

the CPU is the weak point for both of the consoles to be honest, but I guess it helps to have an abundance of GPU power if your workloads fit into the GPGPU paradigm well enough.

GT will impress more on the PS4. This game imo doesn't even look that great on the PC, it still looks like it needs a year or two more in development and I've been updating to the latest build. If not for the cropped/controlled screenshots this game just looks unfinished to be releasing next year.

do you agree these are custom cpu/gpus or not?

point to a single retailer/reseller that I can buy either the CPU or gpu "off the shelf" that's contained in either system ...

How do you discern them as 'custom' they are literally normal AMD jaguar cores and AMD GCN cores on the same die. This isn't some magical paradigm shifting sort of move. The extent of the 'customness' comes from audio processors / gddr5 controllers and some mods to GCN (on sony's side). I wouldn't say this isn't 'off the shelf' its far too similar to not be.

The only real major difference is the number of cores that are in the SoC in the off the shelf AMD ones its going to be a quad core jaguar / 512 GCN cores at most.

Both AMD x290 and Nvidia 780ti are 5 tflops GPU's that's almost 3x times the Tflops over PS4 and we are only in the first months of console life and they both can be chained (SLi , crossfire) 2 or more up to 4 with Titans that's 20 Tflops on high end GPU on PC side not to mention Maxwell coming in next couple of months or so with rumored 10Tflops GPU.

Both PS4 and X1 feel like mobile gaming devices compared to high End PC no matter how much customized hardware they have, its just too weak in ROW hardware!

Bet GT still uses PS2 assets on PS4:p including the physics engine too:p

dont split hairs... It's custom right? If I have to explain the concepts of "custom" and "proprietary" (do you agree that they are proprietary?) then there's no point of a discussion because you are assuming these are "standard" PC parts anyone can buy off the street and make an exact "copy" of the original systems (spec-for-spec)...

again - all I ask is that u show me the links pointing to where I can actually buy these parts if they are *exactly* the same parts that one can buy on the open market today...

otherwise - your point, while in spirit, is valid - it doesn't hold any weight or value..... Why is it so hard for some here to admit that these systems are *not* PCs???? And why is it so difficult to admit these are custom SoCs. Yes - they share the same base/core architecture (in many cases previous systems did this as well).....

just because a system is "based" off of what is typically considered a normal PC design because it happens to be on a similar chip as PCs doesn't make it a PC..

heck the gamecube and our other beloved gaming systems were based off of PowerPC chips... Depending on who you ask you could argue that these older systems were mainframes based on your statement above.... :D

even Sony and MS both have stated these are "custom" chips... Seriously... Send mark cerny an email or tweet and ask him if the cpu/gpu are custom on the PS4...

wow, these consoles are even more behind than I thought, I'm certain the cpu will be a boat anchor going forward. The exclusives will look good, but we can't get bf4 at 900p with a completely solid framerate, much less 1080p and its not like PC games are going to stop advancing from here either.

The point is that the level of customisation is so low that one should not expect that great leaps need to be make to extract good performance from the machines. We aren't dealing with a Cell or a brand new type of video card. We are dealing with what is essentially and you can buy these next year, AMD Temash/Kabini SoC's with more cores and some minor adjustments (such as eSRAM to make up for anaemic DDR3 bandwidth, or GDDR5 memory controllers). These designs don't depart from the norm for the SoCs that far and as such I don't think they really deserve the entire 'wait for teh special sauce to be understood' brigade that some people bring out.

never said anything about "special sauce", etc.... Lets stick to the point at hand to be clear... These are, by purest sense of definition, custom and proprietary chips... Yes?

Considering both machines are pretty much just PC's nearly every engine out there that has been built to work on a PC has been built for the next gen consoles, only some fairly minor tweaks would really be required.

Not really, most pc engines use 4 threads maximum. To get anything decent out of these awful console cpu's they're going to have to use all available threads all the time, re threading an engine is not minor work by any means.
