Rumor: MS is looking into acquiring EA

Square was on the list you posted as well, why leave that one off now?

Square, to me, is Japan’s big publisher where the other two seem to be more reliant on being published. But if they’re big publishers then good for them.

I still don’t see why buying any of them would be such a big foul.

How bout if they just buy the Platinum and From?

And what if they were bought but to please the Japanese fan base continued to release games there?

Better yet how bout Namco Bandai? Or is that a nay cos like some 75 percent (guessing from their wiki page) are all licensed properties, most of which fly under the western radar.

Whom ever they buy I see it as an investment for the next gen, we all know it won’t really rock the boat till then.

They should buy Platinum and put them right to work on an action game where you fight alongside a dragon

It should be noted that Polygon said they spoke to a source inside MS that said they looked at buying EA, the analysts are on the outside looking in.

Well, no, it was an unnamed source "close to Microsoft," whatever that means. Could be inside, could be outside. Could be the guy who delivers sandwiches. Ultimately, we're talking about an unsourced, uncorroborated rumor.

Even if it were 100% accurate, all he/she said was that they were considering it. As many have pointed out, it means very little to say a business is considering something. Businesses consider thousands of things.

Japan is NEVER going to embrace xbox, there is no reason for them to make a huge investment in a company who's products are made mainly for the Japanese market.

NCSoft would be a smarter choice. Try and crack the Chinese market, and go for a company that already has an established clientele that uses the GAAS model/subscriptions.

Even if they don't buy an Xbox, they could rope them into the "Gamepass" ethos more readily.

Doubt Platinum will be rushing to work with MS again anytime soon

What if you play as a little girl who controls said dragon, but each time you kill another dragon you become ill and grotesque as if you were cursed
Agree to disagree here. Whoever they purchase, theyll have something ready to go by end of this year, beginning of next, max. Microsoft needs to be rid of this stigma ASAP. They have great positive momentum going now. Great exclusives added to the roster will only help.

I think From Software is on the brink of blowing up. They have a rabid fan base of hardcore gamers and all it will take is an IP that caters a little more mainstream with a normal difficulty level. Reminds me of Bethesda is the early 2000s. Morrowind was a little too hardcore for the mainstream but as soon as they streamlined their games a little and fixed the jank, they went mainstream. From Software has significantly reduced the jank and Bloodbourne was a little more accessible. I think they’re on the verge...but if Microsoft bought them, there would be death threats. They’ve become sort of a PlayStation 2nd party outside of Souls. They would bring in a lot of hardcore gamers to Game Pass.

If I were Microsoft, these are the types of studios I’d be targeting if I wasn’t going to keep games on PlayStation. Almost every studio bigger than this has much of its value tied up in the fact that 2/3rds of their sales are on PlayStation. From Software still does single console releases and is the next studio that could go big time.

Jez from Windows Central said when he asked Microsoft people about the rumor, they thought it was funny. They could be great actors but he got the impression that Polygon got their signals crossed and misinterpreted the rumor. It’s not impossible that Microsoft is negotiating something with EA but highly unlikely they were trying to buy them out. Might be some sort of Game Pass/EA Access partnership. That seems to make a lot of sense and if true, could bolster Game Pass without the expensive purchase. I’m predicting some packaged deal of the 2 services.

I'd bet the faem its going to be a big developer or publisher. Probably one or two IP purchases. The headlines will make a big splash - enough for the gaming community to know without certainty that the AAA exclusive situation has been rectified, damn near over night. I'm sure we'll hear something soon enough.

Its going to make waves though. No fanboy bulls*** but, I'm predicting Sony and PC fans downplay the announcements, there'll probably be some backlash from the gaming community as well. Feel free to quote me.

If you believe that you would have to believe something was going with Valve too

I'm not sure about the MS/Crytek relationship. But that would at least be a studio with the techical chops to create their own game engine.

Heresy. They should buy Platinum and put them to work on Alan Wake 2, and then buy Remedy and let them do a dragon game.

This is true. Over 4 years later, their launch Xbox game is still amongst the best looking.

Buying EA would be bad for gamers. Games from EA shouldn't be exclusive. Unless they treat it like Minecraft and keep it multiplat.

What if they buy Bungie, cancel the Destiny contract with Activision, and tell Bungie to make the FPS title of their dreams that isn't Halo?

People say Bungie sucks now though.

Would they be brave enough to have EA titles day 1 on Game Pass?

Would EA allow that? being that it would basically kill EA access so it seems like that would be a big no. Now if they bought EA (we all know that's not happening) the games would be 1st party and they have committed to those being on GP on day one so I would think they'd almost have to include them.

Well if MS owned them access would be merged with Game Pass Anyways. No point In them having both

Yeah, that's why I put it both ways. if they did buy them and they've already committed to 1st party games being on GP day one it just seems like they'd have to include them.

Might not include them by pointing out they are still making games for other platforms.

But yeah I don't see this happening anyways.

I dunno. So many rumors have come out since this one and most have been responded to by MS. Still no comment on this one. Another reason I'm not completely sold on this just being a rumor is because this rumor (true or false...) has set expectations. If they wanted to set expectations to something more akin to what Microsoft plans to do, you don't allow something like this to go on without some type of an official response.

If anything, maybe Microsoft allowed this rumor to take hold to gauge the gaming community about something like this. That's what I'd do.

Also, I could see MS doing something like this and perhaps informing the gaming community that all EA games will go exclusive a year after the deal is announced. I mean, since we're just speculating and all..

What expectations? Who is going to be disappointed by them not being EA?

Would it be worth spending far more than your gaming division makes in a many years to buy a company who's value mostly comes from them being a multiplatform publisher?

Short term - no. Long term? Yes. The problem with peoples analysis of how this wouldn't be a good thing, is that you're not looking long term.

Of course, financially it sounds too expensive, you believe Microsoft would want to recoup their investment right away. EA primarily makes their money by being a major 3rd party publusher. And, you're right. Short term, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Long term however, the idea would be hard for some to get used to, hence why I mentioned to put the gaming community on notice - let them know it IS happening. But the appeal of Microsoft having a stable of top tier developers and IP's at their fingertips with more on the way would definitely garner a lot of interests and sales in hardware, software and services under the Microsoft umbrella. The only real gamers who wouldn't want this to happen are PlayStation fanboys as this would strike a mighty blow against Sony and Nintendo. I'm not saying either company would go under but, it would make both of them niche products for gamers. In truth, Nintendo is striving this way. Sony woukd have to adjust to the new market.

I woukd welcome something like this because its a perfect fit! EA games finding a permenant home on the Xbox console. Both software companies, both American. PC is also another large bit of real estate where you can add another revenue stream by making most of those Play Anywhere. Especially sports.

It would instantly fix the "no-exclusive" mantra and make the Xbox essentially the defacto console to own. MP heavy hitters, SP, RPG, Sports, not to mention all ready established Tent pole Xbox franchises, best services, most powerful hardware, best online synonomous a plethora of mega franchises under one roof.

Again, short term, no. Long term, yes. Hell yes it would be worth it. They'd make their money back through many avenues. That's my opinion.
