Source says people will "definitely be impressed" by Sony's Oculus Rift competitor; first look at it reportedly coming during GDC 2014 in March.

Sony will officially announce its PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset during the 2014 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, a source told TechRadar today. The show opens on March 17 and GameSpot will be in attendance.

TechRadar's unspecified "insider source" told the site that Sony's Oculus Rift competitor is coming along nicely. "The quality and resolution are really, really good. People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built," the tipster said.

Sony's rumored virtual reality device for the PS4 was first expected to be announced during Gamescom in August or Tokyo Game Show in September. However, that never happened. That's because, according to the source, Sony wanted extra time to make sure the device--which still does not have a name--is ready for its official unveiling.

"Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it," the source said. This is a markedly different approach to the Oculus Rift, which has been released to developers across various stages of completeness.

Of course, Sony already has a line of dedicated head-mounted displays. But this new virtual reality headset is believed to be tailored specifically for gaming purposes. Its announcement would come as little surprise, as PS4 lead system architect Mark Cerny said this month that virtual reality could be a major force in the industry over the next decade.

"The impact of virtual reality technologies could be pretty significant going forward in that time frame," Cerny said at the time.

Microsoft is also rumored to be working on virtual reality technology of its own for the Xbox One called "Fortazela," which is reportedly similar to Google Glass.

Why wouldn't Sony and Microsoft strike a deal with Oculus VR to bring the Oculus Rift to the PS4 or Xbox One? According to creator Palmer Luckey, those consoles are "too limited."

Hope so.

Let's do this.

Interested to know the price point as early info gathered from CES this year suggested around $600-700 as it is meant as a high fidelity viewing device first..

Final cost is always driven by quality and resolution of the displays and head tracking hardware precision. I owned and did some programming with the Virtual IO back in the 90's which cost $5-600 and the display was just 320x240. There was another unit that had MechWarrior support that cost $1000+ which I think supported 640x480.

If it costs that much I'll stick with boring real life.

Cost is why MS is planning their Google Glass like display for X1 as the Kinect will provide the head tracking and the glasses can create 3D HUDs and objects for gaming as well as other info.

But that's 500 dollars before you even get started. That's not cost effective for me.

If you have an X1, it will be cost effective if the glasses are only $150-200. But that is another topic.

Hmm... if the head tracking is done by Kinect, wonder if MS will have a special version of the Rift designed which would allow lower cost and entry to VR; if the Rift takes off that is. Sony might be able to do something similar if people have the PS Camera.

Going to guess (if it is revealed) Drive Club will be one of its show pieces at GDC. Can't think of any other reason why we have seen nearly nothing about the title for this long.

Not really interested in VR right now. But it'll be nice to see some more news and how it would look like.

Oh and Jackie is back, whoa.

You lost your man hoold there Blue.

I never tried VR, but it does seem to be the obvious next step in immersion. Full field of vision, can get creative I'd imagine.
What is your PSN ID, its not under your avatar.

the psn option doesn't seem to show up till after your approved or something

Sounds really interesting lol since i am still on a Philips CRT HD 1080i max. Looking forward to hearing more about it, if the price is around 400 to 500 i am in.

If Sony hasn't their mind it won't be more than 350. Regardless, I think it needs to be closer to 200 than 500 to actually sell as well as they want. If they can get the price down to 150 (I know that is pushing it) in two years.. maybe it will do well.

Maybe they can have two versions of it, one with all the bells and whistels (sound quality, etc) and a bare bones.. screen onliy.

That's supposedly not the same thing that they'll be showing for the PS4

It's why I've always doubted this PS4 headset rumor.

Sony is producing similar devices for really high prices... why are they still pumping out $1,000-$2,000 headsets if they plan on releasing a VR headset for the PS4?

I'm hopeful, but even Occulus Rift's cheapo construction is tough to do at decent pricing.

Yeah I'm not sure about it either, it's going to be hard to market anyway as people have to come to a kiosk to try it out to really "get it" anyway and pricing seems like it could be a roadblock for some time.
