Rumour:Sony's PS4 virtual reality headset to be announced in March

Pretty sure I read it's only 720p which is apparently not supposed to matter since the displays are right in front of your eyes. I also remember reading it wasn't really for "VR" but more of a display.

Yeah, it's a display headset with Neural Surround versus "True VR"

Does anyone know if it will require a camera? Some random guy just posted this, but I've never heard of OR needing a camera, so this is probably false:

I'm posting this here because I don't want to get banned at neogaf or downvoted to hell on reddit.

Rumor: Both Xbox One and PS4 will require a camera for their virtual reality headsets to do body tracking (position in the room).

Xbox One: Already comes with the kinect camera that has infrared cameras on it and the controllers also have infrared lights.

PS4: Camera does not have these capabilities but they can track the controllers with the lights on them, that's why they refuse to turn off the controllers on the lights with firmware because they need them in the near future. So you will either need to buy the current ps4 camera (if it works with the VR headset) or buy a new upgraded more expensive model just to do the same thing the kinect camera already does.

These headsets are slated to cost anywhere from $199-$299 for both systems and for the PS4 you will still need to buy a camera since most don't already own one and there is a chance the current camera won't work with the VR headset so you would need to buy the more expensive model so in the end with the PS4 you would be spending more money (Headset + Camera) $300-$400

Maybe it could to keep unit costs down ? Also I don't understand why it needs infrared either ? if all it is doing is tracking your position in the room then the PS4 camera is capable.

Tracking via straight optics is not anywhere as precise as reading a grid of IR signals arranged in a specific pattern. If you wat extremely accurate tracking then IR wins over optical interpretation.
