Another great interview David Jenkins did at E3, this time with Sony EU's head Jim Ryan. Jenkins asks some pretty good questions, this isn't a PR puff piece.

A little too naggy in this one.

David Jenkins sounds like a dips***. It's not like last gen had insane amounts of AAA games to play in the first year.

I'm glad it wasn't a fluff piece but a lot of the interview seemed more like the journalist wanting to vent his concerns more than anything else. He's also crazy if he thinks people would have wanted them to wait another year for these machines to be released. I'm so sick of people saying there isn't anything to play on these consoles, I've used my PS4 virtually every day since launch, what have I been playing all this time if there is nothing to play?

Jenkins has a point though. After the longest console generation yet, they appear to have entered this one completely unprepared. If DC had of shipped in time, we would be entering the second crucial holiday season with 0 to 1 first party games.

Sony have made a lot of claims about games, greatness and OS features, none of which look to be realised anytime soon. I'd have been better sticking with my 360 for another year or 2. Sure I know there is a drought after the launch titles, but I would expect that to have ended by it's second holiday season. Instead we get a racing game that's been delayed a year and LBP3. When I picked up my PS4 last November I assumed I'd have a few decent Sony first party games this Xmas. LBP I'll buy to play with my niece and nephew, but I lost all interest in DC this past year, pCARS FTW!!

For those reasons I'm glad Jenkins gave him a hard time, they were the points I would have raised. I hate the retailer and platform specific DLC rubbish also.

Well they could have pushed the Order out before it was ready would have have made him happy? We are already getting a lot of games this holiday, and many more just after. Look at the release calendar, just from their first party studios alone DriveClub, LBP3 and The Order are all coming out within 4 months of each other. When you include 3rd party stuff the fall, winter and early spring are stacked with releases, if they had waited to release a console until this year does anyone really believe all of these titles would still be coming out at the same time? they'd all likely have been pushed back too.

No, they weren't "unprepared", they decided to keep supporting PS3 with AAA 1st party games. They could have moved late 2013 games like Gran Turismo 6, Puppeteer, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, Beyond: Two Souls, etc. onto PS4 but they didn't. That long term PS3 1st party support is commendable.

PS4 has plenty of OS features, got a big update with 1.70, and they're listening to customers and working on the most requested features. They're doing a good job so far.

What's "anytime soon" to you? PS4 has a huge lineup for the rest of 2014 and lots of exclusives announced for 2015, it's a good first year lineup. DC by almost all reports is a good PGR arcade/sim hybrid game that will review well. Driveclub, TLOU Remake, Littlebigplanet 3, and Infamous: First Light will all be "decent Sony 1st party games this Xmas".

I don't know, to me it sounds like a lot of people have never purchased a console at launch before. We had more quality games with the launch of this gen than any other gen I can remember.

No. I knew what to expect as far as a lean first year. But I do agree that both manufacturers weren't exactly prepared.

It's his question on Vita that had me laughing and reminded me of myself.

I can't agree that they weren't prepared, Sony had 2 first party titles at launch and had another big one in the launch window, they had one in May, they'll have another title at the end of July, 2 more in the fall and another in February so in 15 months they'll have released 8 retail releases, that's not counting digital titles.

That's cool. We'll just have to disagree.

It's obvious that some feel the same way though. Some feel the way you do too.

Nothing wrong with disagreeing ;) but I'm going to say it one more time lol 8 retail releases in 15 months is nothing to sneeze at. I think some people (not you) only pay attention to the games that appeal specifically to them vs looking at all of the releases as a whole.

Pretty tough questions in that interview. PR guy seemed pretty poised to answer though, so good for him. Damn. You know? I just could never get into the handhelds since....well, since forever. Especially with phones and tablets offering a more convenient way to game on the go, I cant see myself picking up a handheld anytime soon either. Regardless though, Vita sounds pretty cool. Hopefully it can share some of the spotlight with the 4 in then near future...

I don't think MS or Sony needs to be "prepared" for a launch with 1sr party titles like in the past, though you could argue they never really have been, with the interviewer having to go back as far as Halo for a true classic available at launch.

Reason being, what's the point? It's the same games at the top of the NPD every damn month. If your system is launching with the most popular titles available for it--COD, AC, BF, NFS, Madden, FIFA, etc.--then why invest too heavily in a new IP out of the gate?

I can't say I agree with that approach, but the games I'm playing weekly on PS4, which are BF and FFXIV, aren't even exclusives. And I certainly wouldn't have wanted to wait a year to play those games. Yeah yeah, PS3 has them as well, but they're so damn fugly.

Great post Blue. You're right.

Also I'll add that even if Sony and Microsoft started next gen software development a year earlier, the hardware itself would have still been in development. So I guess looking at it like that, there's not much more they could have done as far as true next gen games and not cross over ports.

I just wish there was more shown from both at this years E3. That's where I feel both are still ramping up development.

I don't think it's a very good idea for first parties to pump out all games at once either.
The Vita launch in Europe were insane, I think Sony published 12 games (!!) on launch-day - Feb 22, and with an equal amount of great third-party stuff at launch, it got very crowded. :-/
Much better to spend some extra time on some titles and release them when it's a light month.
