Sony on Backwards Compatibility

It's 360 vs PS 1,2,3 combined. Not the eco system. A quick google search denotes the latter is less then the former, but not by a lot, as I said. Yeah if you include the PSP the PS3 would be more, but they didn't do that.

A lot of VITA games come to PS4 now and are counted. Good for them.

Dafuq? I don't need to read every book on my kindle to say it has 2800 books on it (which it does). But FYI I currently have 225 games installed on my Xbox One, 103 on the ready to install list (ones I feel I have completed and won't come back to often) and around 80 more incompatible 360 games (about 110 are compatible) and i receive 48 games per year through my gold sub, a couple from E3 giveaways and listing errors and the odd F2P here and there.

I'm not much of a cheevo hunter and even if I was, that doesn't change the numbers.

I still find list wars more irrelevant than ever in comparing Xbox and PlayStation. If you like Eastern/Japanese games, PlayStation is a must own. If they don't matter, you're splitting hairs between libraries.

PlayStation is generally getting Indies first due to the user-base but they eventually find heir way to Xbox. In a handful of cases, the reverse is true.

Since there are so many games overall, I believe the only relevance of comparing 1st parties is the big tent-pole stuff. Microsoft and Sony each have about 4 system selling franchises they publish so far this gen with Xbox's being the most stale.

Sony won hardcore to start the gen due to price and performance. Since then, the casuals go where their friends are. Xbox X is significant in that it's an overture to the hardcore to come buy their 3rd party stuff on the Xbox and eventually bring their friends over there. Xbox X isn't meant to win the undecided or casuals today but if enough hardcore buy into the ecosystem again, it'll be more relevant in 2 years to the mainstream.

List wars are always irrelevant because the only games that count are ones favorable to the persons system of choice.

"When we've dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much," says Ryan. "That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"
Got to give them credit. Sony marketing always wins over Sony gamers' brains.

Sony
PS2 era: PS1 BC is awesome! BC built right into the chip!
PS3 era: PS2 BC is awesome! BC built right into the chip!
PS4 era: Playing old games is awesome! Buy all our remakes, HD rematsers, PS2 games on PSN and please sign up for PS Now to stream ancient PS3 games

Microsoft
We are pleased to support 360 BC on X1. If you have the disc or digital copy, it may be supported among the 300-400 games that work right now.... and counting.

Sony
BC is dumb and hardly anyone uess it. Waste of time. That's why PS4 doesn't fully do it like our old PS systems. MS is wasting their time doing it on X1..........

........... but never the less, after you read and forget about our corporate PR about competing BC support, please go to our PS web site and sign up for PS Now to play old PS3 games, and head on over to the PS Store to re-buy classic PS2 games for the second time in your gaming history. We don't support Gran Turismo because as Jim Ryan says nobody will play it, but we still have Sony branded games like Twisted Metal, Jak and Parappa the Rapper.

For you PS2 purists who bought the system at launch, we even have Fantavision available. A fireworks game that came out in 2000.

...and most of the games that count come out on both platforms. There are a few exceptions however based on the attach rates of Microsoft's and Sony's top franchises, even the best exclusives only end up being system sellers to a minority. Last time either Sony or MS had an exclusive that really made a difference in the console wars was Halo 1 and 2 and GTA3. I'd argue that CODs exclusive DLC has more impact on the console wars than either Halo or Uncharted.

BC has impact as an ecosystem feature more than it matters in list wars. It's a major feature to know games you've bought and will buy will be playable on future consoles without a repurchase. Starting with PS4, all Sony systems will be BC too so we'll hear that it matters again soon enough.

The best selling games on consoles are either CoD, GTA, and probably Mario games.

Without even trying to find some research data showing how many copies of a game are sold, I'd ballpark even these best selling games might have a systems attach rate of 25% tops.... though I wouldn't surprised if it was actually 15-20%.

So for all these "OMG, an exclusive!", most of these exclusives probably have an attach rate of 10% for a high profile franchise.

And for an obscure game, 5% if they're lucky. Which means 95% of that system's user base doesn't give a fuk.

The vast majority of games, sales and community usage mostly come from multiplat games which have been around forever.... CoD, BF, EA Sports, GTA etc.....

The reality is they all count but we need to make excuses for these systems shortcomings. Hence the downplaying of backwards compatibility/Japanese games/power/exclusives/indies and so on.

No need to downplay anything. There's more stuff to play on both Xbox One and PS4 than any predecessor. On average, you can find more deals and get more gaming for your buck. The online services, ecosystems and controllers are better than in the past. Yet message boards are filled with gamers who are bored of the billion dollar franchises that they buy every year and they don't have anything to play even though both consoles have accumulated 1000+ games in under 4 years...many of which have unlimited replayability or huge content offerings.

I contend that if you like Japanese games, buy a Playstation first. If not, go with your friends. If that doesn't matter, purchase the one with the controller, UI and features you like best. At some point, might as well own both because with forwards/backwards compatibility and tons of cheap good games on each platform, it's much easier for everyone to get their money's worth. BC is one of those nice, novel features to add to a list of reasons for gamers to pick up the platform as a secondary console if nothing else.

Yet another Sony patent seems to promise PS5 backwards compatibility
PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny strikes again

"Another day, another tantalizing piece of evidence that we'll get PS5 backwards compatibility. This time PS4 lead architect and Knack creator Mark Cerny has teamed up with Naughty Dog project manager David Simpson to file a new backward compatibility patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment."

"The patent, titled "Backward compatibility by algorithm matching, disabling features, or throttling performance" is a lot simpler than it sounds judging by the embedded flow chart."

Shaun McIlroy on Twitter discovered a patent filed via the USPTO by PS5 architect Mark Cerny that could indicate backwards compatibility for older PlayStation hardware.

The patent specifically describes, “Backward compatibility through use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control.” Given that the PS5 already has backwards compatibility for a number of PS4 titles, it could instead point to support for titles from PS One, PS2 and PS3 eras. Which is pretty great if true considering the number of classics – like God of War Collection, The Sly Collection, Resistance, Killzone and so on – that aren’t playable on newer PlayStation consoles.

So this is a announcement featured in Japan which would mean a middle of the night announcement for the States.

Would be a unusual way to announce it considering how huge it would be to finally bring true bc to the PS5. I would think it would be announced alongside Spartacus or a huge state of play.

Might be a few games I'd give a try, but if the Switch is any indication whenever I try out some old games and think I'll beat them I forget them after a few hours.

Ahem...

Ahem...

On XSX with Smart Delivery am I playing the games exactly as they were?

I have been a huge fan of proper BC.
Disappointed that it was me you were referring 2.

Just 1. Read the entire topic if you want.

Just 1. Read the entire topic if you want.
So you are trying to be a pointless dick eh?

"Not wanting to play the same game exactly as I bought it on a NEW console.
That's why I buy NEW consoles...not to play old dated looking games.
If the consoles stay x86 based BC wont be a issue anymore."

This is what you quoted.

This is what I said.

I also have posted NUMEROUS posts in favor of PROPER BC since then.

The sad desperation is real from you.

All BC games on Xbox got some sort of improvement on Xbox One then even better in X/S
