While I think the games today are better than they were back in the day, I can say that I had more fun gaming back then. Sure, I didn't have online co-op or split screen. But I had REAL friends at my house (or at theirs), and we would take turns or play games that had two controllers together. I had a friend who had an Intellivision (I didn't) and a friend that had a Colecovision (I didn't). Not once did we talk about any system being better than the other. All three of our systems had different games, so what we did was...gasp....took turns and rode our bikes to each others house to play the different games.

Those days are LONG gone I am afraid. But my memories of that will live on.
Sure, but to put that into proper context, you also had more fun as child playing with the box your toys came in than you do today with your TV or home appliance box.

That's why it is so important that people back away from the toxic salt mines that is the gaming internet community. I finally unplugged from most of Reddit and I couldn't be happier. The problem is that live service games have introduced this feedback loop, and that ultimately goes toxic. Either people love the game and want way more content, or they hate it and want to fix it. Either way it turns into constant attacks on companies and even people (the latter is completely unacceptable).

Kotaku's headline is "Starfield Sounds Way Too Big". It is typical click-baity nonsense meant to make people "pre-angry" at a game. Is Starfield going to be amazing or crap? Are these planets going to be barren or fun? I don't know, but you know what, pre-pooping on it is lame. In reality the game is still probably almost a year away if it isn't delayed further. Honestly I don't even get the point of discussing it much. I have no idea if it will be good or not. Gameplay looked fun. I'll pre-load it on Game Pass when the time comes.

Yes, several youtube channels with large followings have mentioned that as well as people on forums and social media. What difference does it make if you have over a thousand planets you can land on if they don't have real content on them? it's just a number. Execution would be key in something like that and I don't think any developer out there could make a game that big with a thousand planets that have enough variety and crafted content to keep the exploring fun.

Starfield is 3 complete planets and 7 moons, and according to Bethesda, many times larger than Skyrim. That doesn't include the "empty" procedural planets. Nobody has even flown every inch of earth in Flight Simulator 2020.

Todd Howard said Starfield features a unique take on space combat, and that was partly inspired by FTL and MechWarrior. And yes, you can steal ships that you board.

Howard said "there's been a lot space sims that we're fans of, and space shooters from the '90s," but the team wanted Starfield "to feel [like] something unique". He went on to explain how both indie darling FTL and classic shooter MechWarrior were unlikely touchstones for the game.

I don't think I'll get Starfield. It looks way too big. :ydrunk:
 
Being that taking off and landing are cut scenes and that you don't control the ship going into space or when entering the atmosphere to land but instead have to choose pre-determined spots for you to land on the planets I wonder how much of these planets are actually explorable? I keep seeing headlines from no name sites saying they are fully explorable and most of them quote a polygon article that doesn't even say that.
 
Wasn't impressed at all. I expected nothing and received exactly that. I'll check it out on GP of course, but I'm not looking forward to it.

Yeah, I’m sure that sure can explore empty spaces, if you want to. Just like Skyrim. Travel to where you’re going by horse of by foot, or fast travel to interest points.

Why would I not at least give the game a chance when it releases? I usually play every big game that comes to GP (Halo & Gears) even though I've never really liked any of the previous games. I'm not a fan of futuristic or sci-fi stuff, so what was shown did absolutely nothing for me to change that.

Yeah I don't know enough about game development to say one way or the other how hard it would be. I do think it could make it more immersive then again if you really can only go to certain parts of each planet (which makes sense) how could they let you fly in from space? Hopefully the space combat is fun, that looked better to me than anything on the ground.

Todd Howard can make anything sound good, he almost had me buying fallout 76 and I hated fallout 4 and don't care for most multiplayer games lol but the execution of the things he describes rarely hits the mark. This is very ambitious so it sounds impressive, visually it doesn't look very good.

Yeah, I’m sure that sure can explore empty spaces, if you want to. Just like Skyrim. Travel to where you’re going by horse of by foot, or fast travel to interest points.
But that is the issue, isn't it, empty spaces. What is the point of a whole planet being explorable if most of it is filled with nothing, and then have a thousand of them. It is essentially quantity over quality.

Exploration is a key component to an RPG.

Those complaining this game is not a looker is funny. When was Oblivion/Skyrim Fallout3/4 about pushing graphics? It was about creating huge worlds we got to role play in. Really excited for this game.

Hard disagree. It's the best looking Bethesda game ever made. I was actually shocked at how good it looked. Their games typically aren't lookers.
