Subscription plans for Nintendo

It has been on my mind for some time that many people on forums think Nintendo is lagging in the multiplayer arena just for not forcing people to pay for their on line experience. For me however this is a good thing, the Nintendo ecosystem feels like the PC, in that it is free and thus feels more liberating and easier to get into than say XB Live or PS Plus.

That being said I was thinking and theorising sometimes about payment plans on top of this free online service. Something that would make me do the plunge into a paid system without limiting those that just wish to play online:

A VC subscription :).
For a tenner or two a month, you are allowed to download any title from the Nintendo Virtual Console. It would open up a huge library of classic games on the Wii U and provide for a legal alternative to the rampant pirated emulation that the Ouya seems to offer (I emulate myself as well, but I hate it when a company advertises with it to make cash out of the hard work of others, so a legal alternative would be fantastic :)).

As long as your subscription is paid that is how long you'll have access to the games you downloaded, the ones you paid for earlier will remain yours even outside of your subscription. It would than give Nintendo a steady income of the emulation and classic gaming crowd and provide us gamers a nice way of playing all the old games legally and as intended as Nintendo also does the quality control over their old titles.

For Nintendo it also has the bonus that it will open up a HUGE library of titles for the Wii U to advertise with, a library that many of their older fans who are no longer into gaming might appreciate and just buy a Wii U for. Imagine even if this is extended to the 3DS! Old 3D titles like Outrun 3D for the Master System or the 3D system of the NES would be available for them in full 3D :).

Sorry if it is a stupid idea, I just thought it would be so great to just turn on your Wii U, download say... Super Mario Bros 3. and play it again without the hassle of third party controllers for your PC and their s***ty D-pads.

I don;t think any subscription plan would fly. I don't see the avg Nintendo gamer (often targeted to family fun) being hardcore enough with gaming, MP or VC downloadable perks to pay up.

Wii U is already struggling for user base, so any optional fee for extra gaming perks may scare off people who think Nintendo systems should be free of fees..... (even if a VC plan is optional).

I would just settle for a universal entitlement program or cross play as Sony does it. Buy a VC game on 3DS, download it for free on Wii U as well. It's the same damn game Nintendo.

But I don't think it's a bad idea Dehnus. I just think most of the games that people would want to play are Nintendo games. So there would be no way for them to subsidize the costs.

I more mend it as an option for those that are into retro gaming to begin with. There would not be any fees anyway if you just wish to buy them separate. Besides there are already Fee systems out there with subscriptions like Wii U sports and Karaoke.

What I suggest is to extrapolate that into something the core gamer might enjoy as an option.

Not that i think they need it but. Nintendo needs an online driven focus and an achievement/trophies feature if they ever want to be as popular as Xbox/PlayStation. That's just what drives gamers these days. The games themselves aren't enough anymore for some.

My buddy has always been a huge Nintendo fan. He was a GameCube only gamer a couple generations ago and i kept telling him to get an Xbox or PS2. Not that the Cube was bad, i loved mine but.. He's like nah, i'm all set. Then he got a 360 along with his Wii last gen and he was hooked. Ended up selling the Wii and now he's an Xbox only gamer. Go figure.

Achievements I find the bane of gaming. No offence but they are so often used to artificially extend the length of short/bad games and so many people just accept it as a good thing.

Rather than Achievements, I found leader-boards and scoreboards far more interesting. First of all as I felt far more competitive to beat the guy above me in lap-times/high score/damage done/etc than with achievements, second it can be customized per game, single-player games don't have to have it but can if they like. Not saying you can't have achievements in some games, but it has to be dependant on the type of game and not just tackled on.

Also achievements breed this rather nasty culture on consoles that also is in PC gaming as of late. Being a dick to each other to an extreme and still feeling like you are the "master race" because of graphics. I often just don't wish to play a game anymore after some jerk has a meltdown because things do not go optimal.
