Technically the most underpowered console generation ever?

Definitely the most underwhelming generation power wise compared to PCs. The Dark Sorcerer won't change that no matter how good it looks.

But it really doesn't belong in this conversation. It's a rendering demo from a small team not a game. It's as relevant as those ridiculous demos we saw at Xbox 360/PS3 era E3's.

When they claim its in-game engine it belongs in this convo with my point that these consoles are possibly stronger then people think with DR/QB offering the best visuals around being great examples of this.

They can claim anything they want, ala Killzone 2 E3 2005 but until there is actual game play running on a retail machine, it's all bullshots and pre rendered videos. So no, it really doesn't belong here.

and Crysis 3 is over a year old and still the best looking game I have ever PLAYED.

Unless you're Crytek and put out this tech demo:

That has all been seen in game when I play/played Crysis 3, minus the joke of the tessellated toad.

They told everyone it was real then re said it on twitter when asked. We won't know until we see more/its released.
So until then you can't call anything bull shots.
Crysis 3 was one of my examples of the best looking games(smokes Killzone SF/Ryse) and isn't a couple years old LOL try less then a year old.

No and Yes. The power difference is there for the most part, No because it took longer to get there and teh systems are not as powerful as they shold be with the time that passed.

Crysis 3 was released on February 19th 2013, now correct me if I am wrong but it is past Feburary 19th right?

The toads are in the game ;) One of the only FPS game series where I actually play through the single player..great series IMO.

I'd be OK paying $800 for a console, but I think I'm in the minority there.

Boy, arent you one of the very ones knocking the XBO because its $500?!?o_O
But you'd pay $800 for a console?!?
Seems like you work awfully hard to find reasons to defend your precious box. Since you had to bring it up though, the Xbone is not worth $500 to me, so you see it is not the price but rather the value. What my post was actually referring to however, was that the only way we would have gotten a console that pushed high-end PC specs is if it cost about $800 dollars.

It's ok to be ok to pay 800. I would too, but it wouldn't work out well.. and the games would suffer etc etc

If I knew the system would sell, devs wouldn't close, I'd do it of course.

So wrong you are man! He doesn't own or play the Xbox One! He just likes to troll things he knows nothing about.

Given comparable power an $800 "steambox" >>> the $500 XBO all day long, every day, twice on sunday.

Why?

Because of the GAMES. There's simply more for the PC/Steambox, there's simply more good/great games for the PC/Steambox and there are more good/great EXCLUSIVE GAMES for the PC/Steambox.

Oh yeah and they're cheaper by like 60% on average (unless you're a day 1 type, then they're only about $10 cheaper in most cases).

So since buying a gaming platform is supposed to be about the games (something XBO fans endlessly claim) the choice would be simple.

That is a matter of opinion though. I have a PC. Have been gaming for a lot of years on PC and I actually would disagree. Yes, there are more games overall, but I for example do not like strategy games all that much, so there goes a huge chunk of those games and exclusives. I have yet to find a free to play game I like, there goes another chunk. Most of the small indie games suck, and I'm not a huge MMO player either.

and lets face it, it is all about games. If it isn't then what the hell are we all doing ?

More than this though, I think its about being able to get the old games while being up to date to run on your machine. With many of them being worth playing. If steam could ever get a really decent avenue of more old pc games, then it would make it even better to me.

While Deus EX, is ok on PS2... I guess. you stil want to experience games ilke this and similar (no one lives forever) on the pc. This is where it become better and better IMO But I hate using a keyboard for this.

I do hope PS4 starts getting a PC and more retro releases. Just go all out and treat it like the emulators do with each category (genesis etc) You'd really only be missing Nintendo but they are trying to do their own with that.

If they can get it right on PS4, well just hope so

Especially with Playstation Now, I just wish Sony would only use the PS2 ports when it matters or is needed(use PC ports and just call them classic games or something)

lol ... who the heck knows, Most gamers on forums talk as if they were the ones who designed the consoles. Who knows what these things will be capable of in 2-3 years?! and PC elitist can scream all they want ... jugding from the PS4 sales so far most devs will think 2x were to put the games and guess what PC will always be held back by 'inferior' console so the master race ain't there yet ....

It's hard to embrace the classic console "not coded to the metal yet" line of thinking this gen when they're both using weak AMD GPU's with very much standard issue PC architecture. I expect nothing more than "optimization" over the next 2-3 years.

I hope I'm wrong to be honest. Guess we'll know for sure when more X1/PS4 only exclusives drop that take advantage of the increased system memory.

You may be right, but in regards to the xbox one, there seems to be plenty of big things coming going by more recent news. MS will be showing off the cloud again soon. MS is unveiling DX12 and the xbox one is involved here. The xbox one is built for tiled resources yet it seems it is being under utilized right now ( maybe that SDK issue).

Seems to me that there may be be plenty we do not know about for the xbox one or it could be all PR nonsense, but till E3 has come and come and gone, we wont really know.

And IMHO alot of gamers misinterpret this gen ... I for one see that it will bring more diversion in gameplay and things happening on screen and not so much the big bump in GFX like PS2 era to 360. Compared to the old ones these machines have 8GB and not 512 MB of memory ... I am not a dev but that must mean something big down the line and now i get to experience games like FFARR on my couch without the hassle of the PC cause that's just what i prefer, that is how i see this gen 4 months into it and i am already playing the type of games i always wanted to play on a console and you can say the same game is on the PS3 too but the stuff happening on screens is totally game changer wouldn't most of u say?

I will not set myself up for dissapointment and nor shouldn't most of U ... (excuse the gammar lol)

You don't like strategy games? Cool. Still doesn't negate the fact that the PC has the largest library of them. The largest, best and most exclusive library of them in fact.
You don't like F2P games? That's cool too. I'm loving Path of Exile (far and away a better ARPG is almost every regard compared to Diablo 3). That still doesn't change the fact that the PC has the largest library of them.
Same with any other genre (save maybe a handful). Any genre someone enjoys is represented in a larger, better fashion than any console to date, regardless if you personally like them or not.

So when someone spends (as some are obviously willing to do) $800 for a platform, if they have access to Steam then they have access to the largest library of games both multiplatform and exclusive. Not only that but they have access to them much cheaper than their console counterparts. What's more is they have access to games from 5, 10 and even 15+ years ago. How's that backwards compatibility working out for consoles these last, oh... 30 years or so?

But I don't want to get into an argument with you about it. A console peasant expressed surprise that someone would buy an $800 platform over his preferred over-priced underpowered platform and I explained why he shouldn't be so surprised.

Never even attempted to negate the overall size. I even agreed with it right off the bat, But once you start throwing around terms like greatest, and best, it becomes an opinion.

and yes, I am not a big fan of strategy games. Only one series ever really caught me and that is the Civilization franchise.

See how you didn't need to throw opinion based terms in here ? Now there is nothing to say. Now there is nothing that can be said.

Not arguing at all. I actually agree with you overall. Think the above does enough to show why I replied.:)

$800 for a steam box? Hmm, but might as well put this money on a PC.

People also need to consider PC isn't just a game machine, its the true all in one box. You can do office work, video editing, make games using UDK or Unity, edit photos, music etc, things not possible on consoles.

For a power PC user like me, that uses my PC for performance intensive 3D packges like Maya, Zbrush, & now UDK, often needing to run in parallel, there is no such thing as enough power. But to be fair, I am the minority. Most people I know uses the PC or tablet to surf net & maybe some office documents. But of of tehse peopel also not gamer.

I despise strategy games. If I wanted to think I'd go back to school.

And yeah, I was probably a little overly-defensive on the issue. /shrug

For a power PC user like me

That's what they're hoping to accomplish with Steambox tho, not appealing to power PC users. I have a feeling their ultimate goal is a console like experience that they can upgrade every 2-3 years and get people to buy them every 2-3 years. My PC bias aside, I hope they succeed. It would be nice finally having gaming platforms that are truly interchangable with the only difference being what features they have (movie/tv/music/etc...).
