That's right. An entire studio.. just to deliver the guns. And one of the best studios for realistic weapons as well. Gdddamn this game is ambitious.

Ubisoft's The Division recruits Far Cry 3 and Rainbow Six dev Red Storm

Third studio added to help create artwork for the game's weapons

Ubisoft's beautiful-looking, post-apocalyptic MMO title The Division now has a third team working on it. Red Storm joins Ubisoft Massive and Reflections, and are charged with creating a potent arsenal of weapons for the game.

The UbiBlog explains that while Massive are leading the project - building the proprietary Snowdrop engine, designing the world and gameplay systems, as well as writing the story - they called in Red Storm who have a weapons team ready to go. Red Storm was founded in 1996, and was the creator of the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games.

You could say they're specialists at building digital guns and weaponry. "I, personally, have been doing it for about six years now," says Lead Weapons Designer JD Cragg on the blog. "One of the guys on my team has been doing it for almost nine. This is pretty much all I do - authentic military weapons, vehicles and that sort of thing."

"We know that that we can build absolutely the most authentic piece of equipment, right down to the millimeter," says Red Storm Producer Tony Sturtzel. "And the guys who are coming in from the gameplay side maybe want to push the envelope a bit, which is a great jumping off point to push the collaboration, because we have to get together regularly and talk about it from both sides."

Massive had been looking for extra help since Northern Hemisphere Autumn last year, with Reflections also working The Division. "We're working on all systems of the game" claims Reflections MD Pauline Jacquey, "Main characters, enemies, RPG pillars, building Manhattan, our Core technology, online components, and so on. It gives us a very broad and wide input on the game, but it's not as limited as doing the naval battles on Assassin's Creed III."

The Division's release date is rumoured to slip from 2014 to next year, with technical director Anders Holmquist saying "Instead of just throwing more people at a problem, you need to look at ways to help everyone that works on the game get more done, be more empowered, and be more creative without increasing their workload. This is very hard, but by having great tools and procedural systems with fast and easy workflows, it becomes much more realistic to create these incredible games."

In the meantime, wrap your eyes around this lush behind-the-scenes footage. Thanks VG24/7.

Soon the entire games industry will be working it. IGN journalists will be writing the story. Gametrailers doing the Hollywood cinematic videos, and Eurogamer trying to perfect the screenshots of the in game Camera.

With DigitalFoundry adding pixels here and there.

Nothing new though, I mean, the sea battle section of AC3 was developed by Ubisoft Singapore. That's the only thing they did for the game.

There's no way this game is releasing this year. But man, I think it'll be worth the wait.

It's the We Are The World of video games!

Ubisoft does not mess around when it comes to utilizing their development teams, they're just flexing right now. Hopefully this ensures the game goes off without a hitch because watchdogs has completely fallen off my radar with its recent developments.

What developments are those ? please do not tell me it is because of graphics not matching the announcement footage.

Just everything I've seen so far.. graphics being only part of it but moreso the gameplay bitsthey've shown lately. Its giving me Assassin's creed vibes and I was bored to tears with that game.

Gameplay, fair enough.

I'm just sick & tired of the people throwing the game to the side because it graphically doesn't measure up to the announcement footage.

You're going to want to keep your eyes on WD. :)

I wish they would leave Red Storm alone so they can work on an actual Rainbow Six game.

Oh but didn't you get the memo? Graphics ARE the most important thing about games now. If a game doesn't hit a particular resolution or frame rate, its immediately declared D.O.A. by the 12 year olds that have invaded message boards around the interweb. At least I hope they're twelve. Id hate to think that it was adults who were making all the short buses run late every morning.

I thought they were making that Rainbow six Patriots game, was that cancelled ?
Who knows. If you're talking about Rainbow 6 Patriots, I believe they scrapped it and went back to the drawing board. No telling how long it'll be before we get another entry in that series now.

:(

How I long for a realistic and strategic shooter.

Don't care if it's one guy in a garage or 2000 employees spread out over three studios, I buy the end, not the means. I will judge when its done.

There is a reason so many top names in the industry are walking away from big studios and going indie. It is a monumental task to manage a project spanning such a large group and, while it maybe better for getting the best looking in game assets, this paint by numbers attitude of manufacturing games driven by publishers is often detrimental to the creative process that is the art of game making.
