I wrote an article this afternoon about the evolution of downloadable content from over priced horse armor to the now popular console exclusives. While I understand it from a business point I don't think gamers will benefit from this on the whole.

Anyhow, give the article a read and let me know what you think. I'm really interested to get the gaming community's opinion on this rising trend in the industry.

Come on guys! Nearly 1000 of you on this forum and no one has an opinion!? Lol

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK GODDAMNIT! I WANT TO ARGUE WITH PEOPLE!! :p

It is pretty crazy how far DLC has come since the horse armor debacle. For the most part though, I don't have a problem with DLC, even with the horse armor. No one is forcing you to buy the DLC. If you want it and you think it's worth the price, buy it. If not, then don't.

As for console exclusive DLC, in its current state I still don't have a problem with it. It's not part of the main game, it's just an extra. What will be a problem is when DLC will be needed to even finish a game. Of course, that won't be console exclusive.

I think it's a slippery slope for the developers. If one console gets exclusive DLC that the other one will never get you risk alienating a whole bunch of potential buyers. Not talking about small things like horse armor but extra levels. If it's a timed exclusive that's not a big deal because the other console will get it eventually. Look at the backlash Bungie was getting recently from some in the Xbox community who feel they helped Bungie be the powerhouse they are and felt it is a slap in the face for the PS4 to be getting all the extras for the upcoming Destiny. It is a business and they are having money thrown at them by Sony and MS and Sony obviously won this round but to the people buying the games they want to be shown that they are appreciated and, in this case, many felt they were not.

For me, I agree with Zack that as long as it isn't DLC that is needed to finish a game it really isn't a big deal. Or if it isn't something that helps flesh out the game story or an important mission that makes the story feel more whole, not a big deal. I think for games with the potential to play 100s of hours people will feel like they are having a great experience with or without the extras. For games that have a 6-8 hour sp experience and then the console you don't own is getting exclusive DLC that adds another couple of hours, well that could be a big deal.

Again, for myself, I've had games that I've loved but months later when DLC has been announced for it, I've already moved on and am no longer interested in revisiting that game again just for the extra couple of hours added. Have also bought a lot of DLC that I felt was a wasted of time and money.

The only time I feel like exclusive DLC actually mattered was when MS got the GTAIV DLC exclusivity. It was only on the 360 for much longer than most DLC is these days. 90% of the time, the DLC is pretty much skippable stuff.

I'm concerned with all out console exclusive stuff that never has the chance of rolling over to other consoles and that's what I touch on in the actual article. I'm grateful that I have both a PS4 and XB1, much like I was lucky last gen for the same thing, so I can choose based on what interests me most when it comes to purchases. What gets me is that Console A purchasers pay the same price for a game that Console B does yet A gets more content. That's hardly fair.

When it eventually (and it will) gets to the point where a single game has content exclusive to each console then even people who own both will be forced to buy more than one copy if they're some sort of crazy completionist (thankfully I'm not!). I just find it poor form, despite being smart business, that devs and publishers are being bought out and put into the role of system sellers.

I don't get why they even bother with console exclusive dlc (and delayed releases). A good exclusive game might sell consoles, but would dlc? I'm not buying one console over another because of some extra levels or something.

Is it to get people like me who only buy one console brand to buy the other too?

Or at this point in the cycle of brand new consoles to sway their initial purchase I'd say. I can be annoyed by timed exclusives but at least if I really want it I know I'll get it on whatever my platform of choice is in due time. I just can't see myself being OK with console exclusive stuff though and like I said, this is coming from someone who has them both. It's just wrong for people who can only afford one console and then get shorted product when they pay the same purchase price.

I've got no issue with console exclusive DLC as long as its minor in my eyes. A few side missions here and there, weapon skins etc. I would take issue if the DLC was vitally integral to the story or gameplay. For example I wouldn't be bummed out if Mass Effect 4's DLC on different consoles was different appearance packs or weapons. I would be upset if a recruit able character was only available on one platform due to dlc exclusiveness.

I almost clicked until I saw Canadian in the link.

:D

Timed exclusive DLC is the reason why Call of Duty is more popular on Xbox consoles. Not to mention to superior controller. Every time Microsoft announces Call of Duty DLC first on Xbox at E3 they instantly earn my money.

For a second there I as kinda thinking WTF!? Then I remembered my whole spiel in the introduce yourself thread... and then I laughed and laughed and laughed.

Seriously though, CLICK IT.

Maybe right now because the PS4 launched first. Things will return to normal with CoD: Advanced Warfare and Battlefield Hardline. The Xbox One versions will sell more.

2 million more consoles in the market means that won't happen. Not a chance.

I'm sure when all the dust settles, in another couple years or so, both consoles will be close together on sales but with a lead as strong as Sony has right now there's no way the numbers support those games selling more on XB1.

No not in sales and as a game player the version had the has the most online active players is the version I would prefer. PS version of COD/BF tend to have more online players.
