"Ready At Dawn’s
PlayStation 4 exclusive,
The Order: 1886 has drummed up a lot of attention from various media outlets. Its superb graphics and stellar
gameplay have been praised over and over but I feel like, at the moment, it’s all hype without too much substance. Before you get out your pitchforks and duct tape (because who doesn’t love duct tape?) let me explain myself.
You see, I had the chance to play
The Order: 1886 yesterday afternoon during my first day at E3. After waiting in line for around 45 minutes and hearing so much about the game, I was more than ready to take the plunge into the world of
Victorian-era London and see what Ready At Dawn had crafted as their spin on the time period.
What I found wasn’t as exciting as I could have hoped, but there’s certainly
something more there once
The Order: 1886 launches. I just don’t think the developer showed off the correct sequence to truly bring that
something out for those who played the
demo.
If you’ve seen the gameplay footage of The Order: 1886, then you know what we played, or at least part of it. The demo I tried had that initial section before leading off into another shootout just outside the building. This next portion was filled with enemies who tried to dispose of my team and I but with the power of my thermite rifle’s secondary fire, I was able to take them out… which bothered me immensely.
You see, The Order: 1886 puts too much focus on using your gun’s secondary fire. Throughout the first part of the demo, that’s practically all you need to do to progress to the next part. As you can see from the
video, on numerous occassions I attempted to shoot the enemies outright with the thermite rifle, but the spread of the bullets prevented me from doing any meaningful damage, thereby forcing me to resort to my secondary fire once more.
In all the game looks great and plays well enough for me to be interested in its arrival at some point next year, but I feel Ready at Dawn has a lot of work ahead of them if they want to craft a lasting experience more than just a one-off fling. Be sure to have a look at our time with the demo from E3 2014 in the video above."
