The Stand-up Comedy Thread!

Great idea for a thread.

Hey I appreciate that, and contacted the man himself to do this thread.

Post away! Anything. Also should say, I think comedy skits are cool too (aka very welcome)

Obviously things could go awry if someone posts something really actually offensive....... so there is a big grey area there, but I won't be the one complaining.

I must have seen Delirious and Raw hundreds of times when I was younger. We would rent it every weekend. We found a place that would rent us rated R movies even though we were like 9-10 years old as long as your parent(s) signed a letter.

I had thoughts of being a stand up when I was younger. I would watch Caroline’s Comedy hour religiously on TV. So many great comedians. I’ve also seen some amazing shows in person. I saw Carlin twice, Seinfeld, Cosby, Gallagher, which may have been the best comedy show I ever went to. Great memories.

I've never seen a comedian live that I would remember.

Holy crap, I would s*** my pants thinking I could even try doing it.

It's a serious leap of faith I think for a comedian to get started.

Back then us kids could figure out a way around anything. We'd ride our bmx bikes downtown and be back in time to not get grounded.

Imagine a stand up comedy special being R rated and unavailable to anyone now. Not possible.

Is anything even rated anymore? All that R rating did, was make everyone want to watch it.

This thread is clear display of the misogyny of people here.

Where are all the female Stand up comedians!!!!

I can easily name the number of funny female comedians on top of my head that deserve a mention at least.

Edit: Obviously there are funny stand up female comedians, I keep hearing about them, just never seen one yet.

I swear I've laughed at a female comic before.

Give me some time to think about it.

Finally, a woman stands up that is decently funny. I believed I might have met Billy in when I was in Ireland before.

Anyway, I think one reason why very few Female comedians are funny is that Comedy is not easy. If you have a joke, chances are someone already had made a joke about it, more so with beaten-to-death topics. That's why successful comedians joke about everything, & not restrict themselves to certain topics.

There was a female comedian, that was offended when a comedian said in order for jokes to be funny, they need to often be offensive (obviously with people knowing they are jokes & not taken literally). She started stand-up comedy with nonoffensive jokes to proof him wrong.
Wait, you never heard of her??? Exactly my point.

The problem with female comedians (IMO), is they keep trying to knock on the same few topics, which is men, women and race (in predictable ways, or risk cancelled). There is only so much you can joke about the same few topics.

What makes the one I post funny, & the Flipino one funny, is they joke about cultural differences, which is refreshing.

See, even the couple videos you posted, I can't help but see that it is about groups of people, the comedy is not universal and actually comes off as racist in a way that a "white" person doesn't really get or something.

And then women doing comedy, I'm not sure there I just don't know, but yeah I think they should just get way more offensive.

I honestly don't know though. Everyone has a different sense of humour.

One thing I know is that everyone needs to value comedy more and stop getting offended. A comedian should be able to say just about whatever they want if it's understood that the audience is there to laugh along or laugh at things they can't even speak about in their daily life.

I don't see it as a "white" person who doesn't get it, rather than a person from a different culture/country do not get it.

In any case, I agree that people need to be willing to accept being offended in comedy, & comedians need to be able to be more offensive, but its also a chicken and egg issue. We need to have an environment where comedians can express themselves without fear of being canceled or target of threats & violence & threats that Dave Chapelle.

Thing is Chappelle can get away with it because he's black, and he's my favorite comedian btw and I totally get him, I KNOW he has no issue with the LGBTQ community at all. He's just pushing buttons and being edgy and thank goodness for him. He knows exactly what he's doing which is starting a conversation, and also saying f*** it I can say what I feel go ahead and try and cancel me (the dude just cancels himself it seems, then comes back one day)

And he knows there's so many people out there that will take him literally, which somehow makes it even more funny.

I can't even talk about Dave Chappelle at work for example, because that would mean I hate transgender people when really, IDGAF and fully support anyone being themselves, but...... why can't I be myself anymore? Why can't I joke around and be sarcastic about anything because it might be offensive? Well, I could, but then I'd probably lose my job.

So I just keep my mouth shut.

But I've also noticed that this is affecting the amount of stand-up comedy that has been coming out for a couple of years now, and that sucks because I like a good laugh. I love Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, etc.

Love some "edgy" stand-up, there is very little of that now. It's either actually offensive, or scared to offend someone.
