Ubisoft has rebuilt Assassin's Creed tech "from scratch" for Xbox One
Unity developers spent a year getting the engine right

If you were to place a copy of Assassin's Creed: Unity next to an Xbox 360, the clingfilm would flinch back, then split and pucker into an angry, growling mouth. Ubisoft wants to make a fresh start on next generation consoles, see, and that applies as much to the game's engine as the new parkour mechanics and mission types.

According to creative director Alexandre Amancio, the developers have had plenty of time to reinvent Assassin's Creed's supporting technology. "Keep in mind, this game has had almost a four year development. Before we even started the content or anything it was almost a year of development of technology and features and stuff like that."

Naturally, this pre-dated the announcement of the Xbox One. "Even before that, we were speculating," Amancio continued. "And saying, 'OK, let's do this and it should be possible, let's start and we'll readjust once we start the actual game'."
The developer hopes to address a number of long-running irritations in the process of overhauling the tech, though Amancio was unable to specify which. I think guard AI needs a tune-up, personally. "We know of these things, it's all a question of the time and complexity of how to fix them. Sometimes it seems like a small thing but when you open the hood it's like, 'oh, really, it's connected to that!'

"So for this game, because it's the first from the ground up next-gen title, we essentially had to do most of the systems from scratch. Which meant that 'now we have to re-do that, we might as well do this' - it was that sort of thing."

Unity doesn't feature playable female avatars in co-op, for not especially convincing reasons. I've written a blog about how reversing this decision would be good business for Ubisoft. In other news, another new Assassin's Creed game appears to be wending its way to Xbox 360.

No female avatars? That's sexist. The next generation is obviously still too weak to render the distinction of women!

I doubt the missing female model is any kind of dis to women. They've had female models in past games. I do wonder why it is.

Perhaps it's one of those features that requires enough work that it is one of those " if we have time" sorta deals. I mean, If they are going to do it, it should be done right with unique animations et al. I wouldn't be happy with a female character that moves like a man, really.

It's kinda dumb how many articles nowadays have things in their title, but it is never actually said by the person himself. Talking about the built from scratch for Xbox One.

I don't know about built from scratch but i will say i'm looking forward to Assassin's Creed Unity. Then again, with the power of the cloud anything's possible.

I'm pretty sure it's Watch Dogs style co-op/multiplayer.

You're not doing random online co-op missions, you're the main story character doing certain missions that support co-op. You will always see yourself as the main story character, even if other players showed up as women, you would only ever be a guy.

It's not technical. Ubisoft just got caught giving an unconvincing lie as the article says.
It's 100% technical reasons.

Unity doesn't feature playable female avatars in co-op
"The game has co-op? They better let me play as a women then!" Makes no sense. In previous Assassins Creed games there were female characters in multiplayer, but that's because the multiplayer did no matter. You were a separate person and what you did had no impact on the storyline.

In Assassins Creed Unity just like in Watch Dogs you are always the main storyline character. Whether you're playing by yourself or in a co-op mission you are the always same person. You are not a separate person training in the Animus, you are Arno Dorian completing a storyline mission that just so happens to support co-op. The co-op assassin's don't even have different character models, when a friend joins your game they are the exact same character model as you, with only a face and palette swap to separate you.

If this was a previous Assassins Creed game where your multiplayer character did not matter and where there was dozens of male character choices, you would have something to complain about. But in this game, where there's only 1 character, to add a female option would be a significant amount of work. 2x as much VO, reworking animations, redesigning clothing to fit male/female, adding more NPC dialogue that reflects male/female and rewriting parts of the story. All of that work just for a female co-op character?

I have no problem with games having female main characters and there probably isn't enough of them. But this argument that because the game has co-op it needs female characters makes no sense at all. In other games it might, but with the way that Ubisoft has designed Watch Dogs and now Assassins Creed, it doesn't apply.

But Assasins Creed is still going to suck. Did they mention fixing that part?

More like you're believing what you want to believe. Do you honestly think this is an active act of discrimination against the female gender? Did you want to throw any more ridiculous claims in there? Maybe they're racist or hate the gays?

Yeah i see what you mean. As amazing as it looked during E3, at the end of the day gameplay wise it will remain pretty damn similar. And its gameplay is exactly what i am damn tired of. Bring some goddamn new things, some real changes, make the combat a bit gee i don't know...more challenging maybe Ubi? Sigh.

ok MOD since this has to do with the XBOX ONE
why did you move it??????????
[HASHTAG]#plainview[/HASHTAG] please move back
this is an xbox mag article talking about the xbox one
so it belongs in the xbox forum thanks!

Just not powerful enough to fully understand them.

There is no power great enough for what you speak ;)

I'm pretty stoked for this one. I loved the first one, liked the Second( weird considering it's many peoples favorite), LOVED the Third( also weird as many didn't like it), and really liked the Fourth. Never played Brotherhood or Revelations.

The graphics for this one almost look like an oil painting. I love it! and the setting should be great.

So that's gonna be the excuse now. "Well, we just built this brand new engine from the ground up, so things should look/play, be better optimized in the sequel..."

I'd love to see them offload all of their AI to the cloud for the X1 version...

You think so?

AC has been one of my favorite new franchises from last gen. I've purchased every Xbox release in the franchise to date.

I think that AC would have incredible potential for cloud utilization, and I'm bummed I haven't heard them talk about using the cloud, but still - Unity looks great. I think it's a huge step up graphically from the last entry in the series, and I can't wait. I'm buying it for sure. :)

Does anyone else think the uproar of "OMG No female assassins!" is ridiculous?

When I think about four assassins running, jumping, and fighting around a city, I don't picture any of them being women. I kind of think history has proven that males produce the best athletes of this nature.

Ubisoft and their marketing lol. The engine is still Anvil, which they now call AnvilNext engine. I'm sure it's been updated and not entirely rebuilt from the ground up.

bot it seems every game has to have a woman and a gay in it now. People sure get upset over the dumbest s***.

I am fine with women. Homosexuals and Transexuals, I am not.
