Sony today announced (via Videogamer) a new 4K Media Player, which certainly looks a lot like the PlayStation 4 with its angular edges and rectangular shape. Sorry to burst your bubble, though. It's not a re-designed PS4.

The 4K Ultra HD Media Player (FMP-X10) goes on sale this summer (price TBA) and allows you to download, stream, and store a range of 4K content. You can download movies and shows from Sony's Video Unlimited 4K, stream 4K content from Netflix, or even play back content from a Sony 4K TV. The box includes 1TB of built-in storage and of course, you'll need a 4K-compatible TV to make it work.

The PS4 does not currently support 4K output for games. Prior to the console's launch last year, Sony said that it isconsidering adding support for 4K output for still images and movie content, but made clear that "there are no further details to share."

4K TV owners will have more options for content as 4K Blu-ray discs and players could arrive as early as the 2015 holiday season, according to TechRadar.

Chairman of the Blu-ray Disk Association Global Promotions Committee Victor Matsuda confirmed the report, and said he expects 4K Blu-rays to cost more than Blu-rays, similar to when Blu-rays launched at double the price of DVDs. The Blu-ray formats should come closer in price as the market grows for 4K discs.

Sony Electronics launched a line of Bravia 4K Ultra HD television sets in June 2014 that were revealed to include access to PlayStation Now, which has been in open beta in North America since July. Sony will roll PlayStation Now out in Europe next year with the UK getting the first beta.

Licensing for 4K Blu-ray is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2014 with hardware and 2160p discs ready to launch for the holidays.

Bout time.

Finally something those with 4K TV can enjoy, I heard 4K streaming is barely Blu ray quality.

Is there any actual 4K steaming services yet ? I thought Sony was to have the first one, but have not heard of it going live.

All I know is that actual 4K physical content on a decent 4K TV looks fookin stunning.

Netflix has Breaking Bad and House of Cards in 4K AVS reviewed it and said they were on par with the blurays. But yeah I'll be interested in 4K when these players and discs are released.

House of Cards Season 2 on NF blows away 1080p Blu-ray.
Season 1 wasn't completely filmed in 4K I heard.

4K streaming looks better then 1080p and 1080p upscaled to 4K streaming looks a tiny bit better than 1080p BR..at least in my experiences with them all.

really ? I find that surprising considering the bit-rate limitations of streaming compared to the high bit-rate of Blu-rays.

It does look better and upscaled 1080p to 4K does(although not dramatic) Both look worse then uncompressed 4K content(I use my PC and a USB stick)

I'm mightily impressed when I see these screens in the show room, but unfortunately, here in Oz, we barely have 50% 1080p broadcasts.

When I goto my mums, I think her tv jumps between 560 for normal shows, and then the 1080 shows are either the news, or sport.

But still.... Man, are these screens freaking pretty!

Sometimes I wish the tv could sense when not to be sooooo glaringly bright though. Like, if you start calling up ex's, the tv went dark and quiet, and put on old episodes of Judge Judy.

LG, you win again!

Those are out already. You got it backwards though, I bought a C6 which is the curved 3D model, bought it 2 weeks ago from BB for 3K with 24 month financing 0%. Today it dropped to $2800 so I went and got $200 back. Best picture I've ever seen.

I remember the first time I saw an OLED tv it was only 1080p but the picture was more impressive than the 4K LED sets that they had.

Is there still concern about OLED's long term viability..? I'm not up enough on these things but I remembered it used to be a concern.

And where does HDR fit into this...?

100,000 hour lifespan on OLEDs. All OLEDs this year support HDR 10 and Dolby Vision out of the box.

Hope the Sony OLEDs will be in the 2017 shootout. Looks like LG will finally have some competition. Though I guess LG is providing the panels for their sets.
