Unicorn Overlord Reveals ESRB Rating Description; “Jiggling Breasts” & More Confirmed

October 15, 2023 Orpheus Joshua
The ESRB rating description for the upcoming Atlus and Vanillware tactical JRPG Unicorn Overlord. There are justifications for the T for Teen rating. Blood, revealing female designs, and language are highlighted. For instance, the word “bastard” will appear. Things are going to get intense.
In Unicorn Overlord, players must prepare to defy destiny and immerse themselves in a regal odyssey. This RPG promises an unforgettable journey. Brought to life by the creators of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, this game seamlessly blends overworld exploration and a unique battle system, all in the iconic Vanillaware art style.
As a player, you will traverse a vibrant and enchanting world, forging a formidable army of over 60 distinct characters, all while carving out your legacy across five illustrious nations in this grand fantasy adventure. Unleash your kingdom from the shackles of adversity and seize control of your fate in Unicorn Overlord.
The story is set on the continent of Fevrith comprised of five nations, which is put into war by a general from Cornia. The prince, Alain, flees as subjugation occurs, eventually becoming the leader of the Liberation Army a decade later.
You can view the ESRB rating description for Unicorn Overlord below:
This is a strategy game in which players assume the role of a prince trying to liberate a fantasy kingdom from evil. From a 3/4-overhead perspective, players traverse lands while building an army and liberating areas (e.g., towns, fortresses, cities). Players can deploy and move military units (e.g., archers, knights) to battle enemy soldiers and mercenaries in turn-based combat.
Players can choose various actions (e.g., Attack, Defend), which are depicted in short animated sequences: units shooting arrows, slashing swords, casting magic spells. Battles are highlighted by cries of pain, impact sounds, and blood-splatter effects. Some female characters are designed with low-cut outfits (e.g., deep cleavage) and jiggling breasts. The word “bastard” appears in the game.
Unicorn Overlord will launch for PlayStation 4 (digital-only), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on March 8, 2024.

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim was amazing. Can't wait for this.

In the November 30 issue, #1824 of the weekly Famitsu magazine, Atlus and Vanillaware unveiled new information for their upcoming tactical JRPG Unicorn Overlord.

Various details are provided, such as the many types of quests, town reconstruction, and the mining minigame.

You can view a translation of the gameplay information below via our team’s Ryuji:

Field Quests

The main appeal of Unicorn Overlord is its free exploration. With a few exceptions, the player can go to many places from the beginning of the game, and it is up to them to decide how to proceed. There are many sub-quests and training elements scattered across the map. Some quests are very unique, such as catching chickens on the field.

Quests

Quests are divided into four types: Main Quests, Sub Quests, Field Quests and Liberation Quests:

Main Quests advance the story when completed.
Sub Quests trigger by talking to NPCs.
Liberation Quests are towns you have to liberate by defeating the enemies.
Field Quests trigger while on the field, with a conversation event happening to indicate such. (An example shown in the magazine is a character saying, “Please help! Can you save my village?”)
Accepted quests are added to a list that provides comprehensive details such as the quest description, location, and recommended level.

Liberation and Restoration

After you’ve defeated all of the enemies, the town will be liberated, and doing so also makes Armor Shops and Tool Shops become available.

Unfortunately, after being under control for a while, the town is in ruins, which is where you must help contribute to the town’s reconstruction in order to restore it back to how it was. The materials that are required can be collected in the field, and reconstructing the town will allow you to unlock new facilities, such as inns and more.

Furthermore, a single ally can be stationed as a “garrison” in each reconstructed town, and they’ll earn any bounties and automatically harvest items.

Fortress

Inside the Fortress, you can strengthen your units and have mock battles between allies. Each fort can have up to 5 units, and each unit can have up to 10 allies, making for a total of 50. Points are required to use the functions of forts.

The fort’s Functions are increased with Medals of Honor, obtained by clearing quests and delivering materials. You can also spend Reputation Points, which are obtained through your reconstruction efforts. Furthermore, Mercenaries can customize their colors.

Enemy Encounters

Simply put, it’s a battle against enemy forces. If defeated, the player is returned to the last liberated area.

Mining Field

A mini-game in which players mine for ore in a minigame. There’s also a chance you might find a treasure map and search for treasure while in the field.

Yep this is Fire Emblem in all but name. Its too bad Vanillaware is so PC-phobic. Would do exceedingly well on steam.

Played the demo this afternoon. Game is gorgeous like a Vanillaware game usually is. Also a nice amount of fan service like a Vanillaware game usually is. There is alot less direct action than I would have expected from a strategy game of its type but it is still enjoyable. I don't know what console I'm getting this on yet. This type of game is PERFECT for the Switch but the PS5 and XSX versions look better on the tv.

If it had a PC version I'd get that because the mods would turn this game quickly to a "T" game to a "M" game.

This was my first Vanillaware game I have ever played. Not even Atlus.
This demo was pretty good. They a few things that I find it weird that I can't control and didn't expect to be this type of game.

However, the style and presentation are amazing.

I am playing this with my G Cloud hand held and it is nothing but sweet enjoyment!

I'm still working through the demo. Its surprisingly meaty. This and Stellar Blade are some of the few reasons to keep a console instead of going all in on PC. There are a handful of games not coming to PC like those and The Show. Next Gen, who knows.

Also Vanillaware running out of money developing this game is not a badge of honor. Quite frankly its the opposite. I'd classify this game as "AA" and blowing your developmental budget with Atlus as your publisher shows: 1. The dire state of game development as it relates to budgets, 2. Poor Project management on Vanillaware and Atlus part.

90 on MC right now, OC only has 2 reviews

Unicorn Overlord is heading to PlayStation, Xbox Series consoles, and Switch, but not to PC – is there any reason in particular you chose not to aim for PC at launch? Has there been any discussion about a PC port later on?

Yamamoto: As a publisher, we would like to deliver it to PC users as well, but per our agreement with Vanillaware, we are only releasing on console. In other words, there are no plans to port it to PC currently.
