TLDR:

* Unity will charge a one-time fee per player based on them installing (and initializing) the game
* Fee scaling is dependent on revenue thresholds. $200k/200k installs for Personal, $1M/1M for Pro
* For Pro/Enterprise, the cost scales downwards to $0.02/$0.01 per install, but for Personal it remains at $0.20
* Unity Plus is getting retired, the 100k rev limit on Unity Personal is being replaced with the payments above

I’ve read a few articles on this since it happened and it seems like a seriously dick move that has huge implications for small time development studios. I hope they roll back on this. I can’t see all these great small studios using them anymore if they insist on pushing this through

Unity will be out of business by this time next year. Just bad decisions all around.

You know its bad when people ask the government to step in.

There is 2 side of a coin, & that's coming from a UE developer.
There are far worse business practices like platform owners price fixing & charging 30% royality on revenue (not profit). MS, Sony, Apple, google, steam. It is a "coincidence" that everyone charged the exact same amount. This is call price fixing where competitors get together to set prices, & is illegal. I studied these as a requirement for my job.

Anyway, the other side of the coin is, Unity is losing money. Its not that they are swinming in money and greedy for more, unlike the one I mentioned above. They have to find a way to make money or they go down, & you know what will happen when there is no competition.

How they choose to do it is of course highly contested, & deserves backlashes, and devs aren't all angels either, & everyone wanted the best deal for their own benefits.
There is a need to meet in the middle, which is always hard.
I think the new plan is reasonable, but I think in fairness, any game in development before this rule SHOULDN'T need to confirmed with this rule, only games developed after,
