Not sure what platforms it will actually work with. Right now it seems more for mobile devices.

Peripheral company Mad Catz today announced a mobile controller called the L.Y.N.X., a new hybrid gamepad described as "radically different," and one that has been designed to offer "uncompromised control and portability." The marquee feature is the way it can transform into a range of different configuration to suit your gaming needs.

"Designed for the passionate gamer who typically plays across multiple devices, the L.Y.N.X.features a patent-pending design which allows it to fold into a compact footprint, fitting into a shirt pocket for travel without compromising on the classic console-style ergonomic feel gamers are accustomed to," Mad Catz said in a statement.

As you can see in the image at left, the L.Y.N.X. has three primary components: Left Wing, Right Wing, and Controller Brain. The controller works with your existing smartphone, and can even break apart and attach to a tablet of up to seven inches. Mad Catz says the L.Y.N.X. is also well-suited as a companion for Smart TVs, as it also comes with a QWERTY keyboard module that lets you type.

What's more, the controller even features a built-in microphone so you can search by voice. It's also described as a sturdy and premium product, as it features hard-wearing metal and "premium" components. On top of that, Mad Catz says L.Y.N.X. buttons have been rated to one million presses.

"We believe the L.Y.N.X. represents a generational leap in mobile game controllers," Mad Catz president and CEO Darren Richardson said.

The L.Y.N.X. is listed for sale on the Mad Catz website for $300, though you can't order one just yet. The controller is expected to start shipping in March 2015.

I'm getting old, the first thing I thought of was this beauty:

The button placement was pretty innovative for the time, you could flip the system and video 180° for left-handers.

I used to love that thing. Spent many a night glued to the screen playing Summer X Games & Red Barron

Man, Red Barron - that was a great game. My neighbor had it and I could never find anything on my Game Gear to match it.

Not so sure about the new L.Y.N.X though - seems like a limited market to me, and niche devices haven't done so well lately.

$300 will make it a limited market. It is cool though.

Ahh, the Game Gear. I used to love that too. I recall playing Ayrton Senna's Monaco GP 2, Lemmings, Desert Strike, Road Rash( wish this series would make a comeback), and Prince of Persia, on that thing.

Oh my. This is all I've never wanted.

Drop the price down aout $270 and I'll bite.

Wow that is just f***ing dumb as s***. Do many app games even have controller schemes built into them?

You also need a screw driver to add on that top part I mean come on. You can just get controllers already on the market that do this stuff even if you need a few it still may end up cheaper. The taking it apart seems like a pain and one day something on that mofo is going to break taking it apart all the time.
