Was anyone ever actually offended by "Merry Christmas"?

Just for my own personal interest I kept track of the number of "Happy holidays" and "merry christmas" I received this year shopping. Im not religious, or a believer in the war on Christmas I was just curious.

I was never told happy holidays, and it wasn't just at stores where you would assume im holiday shopping. Restaurants, gas stations, etc.

I don't really care what you say to me, could say happy holidays, happy hanukkah, happy kwanza, merry festivus, I just respond with merry christmas regardless. And if you had the gall to look at me say "I don't celebrate Christmas or thats offensive" after I said merry Christmas Id probably just tell you to f*** yourself.

Wo-Would you ever say that to... to... President Obama while thousands of cameras lock on you? Ahhhhh.

kind of the reverse?
Yes, kind of, lol, but it's still the same. Lady sues because she wasn't allowed to give greetings to people "the christian way" by saying Merry Christmas over saying Happy Holidays.

I've always said "Merry Christmas" and I always will say "Merry Christmas". It's how I was raised and I'm not going to change who I am to pander to a few thin skinned asshats.

A few days ago while I was out shopping for my personal xmas gift (A new Glock 19 Gen 4, CAN'T WAIT till mine comes in) I was walking out of a place called Gander Mountain and my nephew asked why I say "Merry Christmas" to which I replied the same sentiment I mentioned above, adding "and if they don't like it, tough s***" and the two women at the entrance laughed, tapped me on the shoulder and very happily said "Merry Christmas to you too".

Now, I'm not religious, in fact I think my opinions on the subject are rather well known around here, but still I believe it's Christmas and therefore I wish a merry one upon others. I've said it to people that are obviously Jewish and they'll sometimes reply "Happy Hanukkah to you" and I don't get offended, other than the fact that all religion offends me.

I'm offended by Chinese people celebrating New Year in February. It's not even the same day each year, it goes according to lunar cycles. Ain't nobody got time for dat.
And they give eachother cash - how am I supposed to re-gift unwanted junk with that system f***ing heathens.

What happened to all our TXB Jews? We even had Da Jew Crew back in the day. Where did Gib ended up?

I see no reason why anyone would be offended. With that said, this so called "war christmas" is greatly exagerated. There is no "real" war on christmas, and christians for the most part, are just trying to cry about every little thing said about them.

Yeah, I never say happy holidays. Then again, I live down south....rarely find anyone that doesn't celebrate christmas....or anyone that gets offended by it.

It's a global economy now. there is no way of avoiding it so therefore its Happy Holidays since its the holiday season. I'm not offended by saying Happy Holidays but I do some racial profiling and if I can see that they are definitely WASP i say "Merry Christmas" faster than you can draw your .44.

I've always read about this, but never ever encountered people who are offended by it.

And for people that are offended, they should just relax. The point of Christmas now is mostly not even about Christian prayer, religion and such. But more about time off for family, presents, the whole commercialization of gift buying and bargain hunting, and everyone just getting some time off at the same time. There's also other religious holidays around the same time, so the time for celebration really covers many.

If some people are that offended, then don't take the free stat holiday and spend the time working from home or going to the office and peacefully doing work with nobody to bother you for days. Buy you won't see that happening, as anybody who gets a free stat holiday will take it no matter what.

Then you don't go out much. I always say Merry Christmas. While working at Gamestop, I said Merry Christmas to a customer who was leaving with a bag of goodies two days before Christmas. She said I don't celebrate Christmas and that I shouldn't say it. I said, neither do I but why else do you think everyone is here in mass buying everything in sight. Bottom line is, people chose to be offended whether they are or not.

And as for Christmas being shoved down people's throats, it's Christmas for crying out loud and last time I checked no one has been converted to Christianity because of sales, commercials or at the very least having someone say Merry Christmas. I don't get offended during Passover, Hanukkah, or the multitude of Hallmark holidays and neither should anyone else during Christmas, Easter, etc.

More and more people are less tolerant every year and it's becoming a very said situation on this planet when you can even say a benign, non offensive thing like Merry Christmas in public without someone feigning offense to garner some sort of attention.
I get out a ton and have dealt with plenty of people. Never saw anyone get offended, it sounds like that lady is in a minority because most people don't actually care as long as you're kind to others, which is the important. As for X-Mas being shoved down people's throats, it gets started a month early. Shopping, radio, decorations, etc. People celebrate good and early. For some people, it gets to be a bit much when Christmas starts on Thanksgiving. Saying Happy Holidays is a way to mask it all, and let's be honest, that's all it is, a general mask for Christmas. Happy Holidays is just a generalization to not make everyone feel like such an outsider. An attempt from companies to snag more shoppers, or people genuinely wanting to create a tiny little shred of more peace on earth, see it how you want, but it seems to be a very small minority of people who care about the Happy Holidays/Christmas stuff, even more so, it seems like a majority of those offended seem to be the ones who get offended with Happy Holidays.

I don't think Christmas gets shoved down your throat if yo don't want it to be. Sure, it's everywhere, but lots of stuff is everywhere. You can just ignore it and zone out.

I say Happy Holidays generally but I do start saying Merry Christmas on Christmas eve and of course on Christmas day. I'm an atheist but I still celebrate the day with family, give gifts etc, I don't even think of the Jesus aspect of it lol as that's never what Christmas was about to me growing up, it was just a time to be with loved ones. I can see why some people don't want religious scenes up on public property, I don't get up in arms over it but I agree with them as I'm big on separation of church and state.

As an atheist you are free to not put up a display, in non worship of your non religion. Religious people are simply demanding that you not have a special right to promote your religion by putting up nothing. As courts have clearly ruled that we both have equal access to those spaces, we just want to promote an alternative to your non-display.

Pretty much ditto exactly for me.
