Honestly could someone explain gamer gate I have heard about it but no one explains what the hell it is.

No clue what it is unless we are talking about the death threats toward's that one woman.

Gamergate...lol.

To be honest, from what I know of it, it is all a load of bull. Sexual abuse this, cheating lover that, phil fish being over dramatic - as usual- and the game journalists writing their always poor articles about sexism...yadda yadda yadda. Then obviously you have the internet folk with their r******d out cries, death threats, hacking, and just all round 'wish I could smash their had in to a wall' antics.

So, Gamergate, more like JesusChristWTFiswrongwithpeoplegate.

Would be nice if OP include an explaination on what is gamergate.

It's basically the equivalent of "that skank said something I didn't like about my favorite football team, so I'm going to f*** her in the ear until she's deaf and then kill her family and then, after all that, kill her." The unfortunate part is that while there may be 9,999 people who say that behind the anonymity of the computer screen, there may well be one who will actually do it.

You can f*** people in the ear?

The dumbest thing EVER. A bunch of prepubescent basement dwelling virgin nerds upset about a girl having sex. So they make up a bunch of nonsense about the chick and that she f***ed all kinds of people to get great reviews, blah blah it turns into this HUGE thing that totally is a bunch of MRA led trite s***.

I've always been of the opinion, that any woman who marries for money, deserves every cent she gets. Imagine waking up with Hugh Heffner or Mel Gibson flopping around on top of you!

For a review score though... Wtf? Oh well, some people are REALLY carrying the industry on their back. ;)

that is what's funny to me nothing was ever so called proven and lets say she did sleep with folks for better reviews who f***ing cares. I don't read the dumb-ass sites who act like if you put a good looking woman in a game you're somehow holding women down or other BS. Why get mad over that crap just ignore it and don't read it.

I don't know the specifics of it all, but I know there have been members of GamerGate who are just psychopaths. It's basically a open forum for anyone who has criticism against feminism from what I understand and that'll attract the worst type of people as we've seen with the recent school shooting. It's reminiscent of Anonymous' structure I think, what with there being a lack of real leadership or self regulation to at least reduce the amount of horrible things possible. Only minus the good things Anonymous has done to go along with it.

It has a point in that gaming journalism in general needs to be more than just a glorified commercial most of the time, but 1) it started out of some really dumb cause and 2) it tries to kill a site that has nothing to do with preview/review culture they are reportedly targeting 3) especially when Warner Bros Interactive wanted to enforce such shady rules on Shadow of Mordor and none of these Gamergaters never even cared about it. It's just a bunch of mysogynist trolls that needs to STFU and grow the f--- up.

I'm going to go ahead and say it's stupid.

Without knowing what it is.

Thanks for that link. The article makes it clear that "Gamergate" isn't about one specific allegation or incident, but about the whole issue of feminism and harassment.

I'm glad the industry is being forced to deal with it. I've always felt videogames were way too male-dominated, in terms of characters, plot, and tone. Seems like we are in the early stages of the discussion, with people polarized (or at least, those are the ones shouting the loudest). It's like the guy from Kotaku said, this is an issue that other media have already dealt with, and now it's videogames' turn.

I assume that the vitriol and polarization is temporary, and that eventually, the discussion will become more balanced and thoughtful. I just hope no one gets hurt in the meantime. So far, it seems like all we have are threats, without any actual physical violence.

My opinion is that as soon as the threats started, the original complaints about the integrity of game reviewing and the coziness between publishers and gaming media went out the window. Now the whole thing is just a cloud of strife moving across the Internet and we can only hope it will dissipate soon. Maybe in another couple of years we can have a mature debate about the gaming media's journalistic integrity, but for now that conversation is dead. At least as far as the gamergate saga is concerned.
