What movies have you seen recently?

Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World directed by Werner Herzog.

I was in a documentary mood and enjoyed finding this on Netflix. It was an interesting look at the sudden surge of Internet technology from different perspectives and thoughts on where it could go in the future. Overall, I really enjoyed it and Werner is a pleasant interviewer.

The movie covers a lot of ground dealing with the potential of this technology, but covers some ground on the negative side including addiction and cyber bullying.

It also looks at the cutting edge including self driving cars, networked robots, and communication with Mars in the future.

5/5

I enjoyed this opening to the film showing the very first Node of the Internet. It's just weird to see this old piece of equipment from the 60s considering the information tech now in my phone.

Nice! I love Werner Herzog, was unaware of this one. I'll have to check it out!

Hereditary - Wow. If you like horror movies, this will likely end up being the best one of the year (or the last several years). Wow.

Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight - Saw this on a list of the best horror movies from Shock Waves. They were were obviously big fans of Tales From the Crypt, because this had not aged super well. Enjoyable piece of '90s nostalgia, not much else.

Good Time - Enjoyable heist movie about a scumbag trying to bail his brother out after getting him arrested. Grimey, interesting style, interesting characters. Maybe the only movie I've ever seen Robert Pattinson in,.

I've only seen him in COSMOPOLIS. A weird slow road trip movie across town by David Cronenberg.

The Beyond:

Netflix Original dealy

It was okay Sci-Fi done in a documentary style describing alien contact through a wormhole. To be fair, the plot was more sensible than Interstellar.

The movie walked a fine line between being an interesting What-If story and being very hokey. It was okay, but I wouldn't give it a strong recommendation.

Ex Machina:

6/10

I dunno, kinda weird especially the ending, but well acted. In some ways, this indy movie did actually pull off better FX than Ghost in the Shell.

This movie for some reason makes me think of Transcendence even though that is the opposite storywise with a human becoming machine; they wanted to keep the motives of the character vague and try to drop a twist on the audience.

I think more should have been done with Nathan than being a rich, drunk, reclusive, genius, kind of Dr. Frankenstein of AI. When Caleb asks him Why? and he says Why Not?, that was a missed opportunity I think to have the character drop his own Quatables or maybe a personal philosophy behind what he's trying to achieve.

Possibly, the movie should have ended on Caleb in the final scene since that might be the stronger part of the story of a human being treated or manipulated as a thing for the purpose of seeing if a created thing can become human.

They Live - Pretty sure this was my first time seeing the theatrical R-rated cut of this. I recall seeing it, or at least bits and pieces, edited for TV a number of times as a kid. Pretty sure I said the same thing about Assault on Precinct 13, but my favorite parts end up being able to see '80's era LA. Carpenter always does a great job at world building, even when the world as as weird as this one.

Deadpool 2 - 8/10 Finally watched this last night. That was a lot of fun. Favorite “oh s***” not sure why I’m laughing part was assembling a team and what happens on their first mission lol. Did not see that coming.

Return of the Living Dead - Just added to Amazon Prime. First time seeing this all the way through, and not edited for TV. Fun '80's zombie movie. Still holds up.

Stayed up to late and did a back to back of:

Resolution
The Endless

These are two really cool genre bending sci-fi / horror / thriller / suspense / mystery / comedy / drama movies about mysterious happenings in a country area. The Endless is the somewhat surprise sequel to Resolution (which you still don't need to see to enjoy). It will actually be available on Netflix next week, but it's $.99 on iTunes and Amazon Prime this week to rent, so I jumped the gun. Resolution is on Shudder at the moment, I hope it gets added to Netlfix as well so people can enjoy both. If you're into unique movies and can overlook admittedly low budgets, I highly suggest these!

These guys also made Spring, which I think is still on Amazon Prime. That's also a really cool unique monster / romance movie, talk your girlfriend / wife into watching it on date night! I really hope these guys get a chance to make a bigger budget movie, I really like all three they've made so far.

Revenge - Extremely bloody "revenge" film. Great cinematography, great locations, well made. Upsetting subject matter and reason for revenge though. Finally streaming on Shudder as of today.

The Predator - Pretty disappointing. It's not without things I liked, but it's probably my least favorite Predator film.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - I watched this tonight on Prime. I really liked the alien and world designs. The movie itself was a mixed bag.

I have watched it twice and have enjoyed it both times.

Mandy - Insane. Preordered the Blu-Ray right after watching it.

Malevolence - Extremely well done low budget indie slasher from 2003. It's like a different take on Halloween with another setting and story. Great soundtrack, looks and feels like a movie from the late '70's / early /80's without tacky nostalgia.

Going to be putting Netflix on hold for a while so didn't want to get into a series. Plenty of original films to watch though so I decided to go with The Ritual. Not bad.

Inferno (1980) - Dario Argento's follow up / sequel to Suspiria. I've seen mixed reviews on this, and I now I understand why. There were things I liked, and things that made absolutely no sense. Definitely not one of his better movies, but not without its own charms.
