Every single generation, something big changes. Last gen, we saw a huge advent in the use of Unreal Engine 3, Call of Duty being the biggest videogame franchise in the world, huge spike in EA's game quality, huge market share gain from Xbox, etc.

While the transition to this new generation seem much smoother, I am sure some things will still change, and some will be big. So why don't we post some that we think will happen and change gaming forever.

I think these will happen...

- Battlefield becomes bigger than Call of Duty, but COD will still live
- Unreal Engine 4 not as widely used as 3, largely replaced by propriety techs like Frostbite and Tech 5
- At least one game at launch becomes an influential franchise... I'm looking at Ryse.
- Halo gets even smaller... but it will stop somewhere and the franchise will live.

I think that TF has the makings of a game that might end up being a shooting star franchise, other than that I think this generation will start to see more people move towards digital games and away from physical games as internet speeds get faster, penetration gets wider, and the infrastructure gets cheaper.

You will pay more money for everything.

@team56th: BF is not getting as big COD. COD might die, but BF is not going to reach the sort of popularity that COD did.

+ Fusing out bodies with machines will be a fashionable thing to do and game related fusions will be top of the line.
+ Nintendo will release a nex-nex gen console that is a living organism that transmits images into your brain via a brain prodding claw.
+ Panda's will be rescued from extinction when they become controllable characters in a man made environment meant to act as a batteground for gamers. They will be bred for the single purpose of gaming.
+ In order to battle Nintendo's organic style of gaming, MS and Sony will include a free sexbot with every console purchase. Optional pregnancy options for the gamer wanting a family.

Whether it's because COD shrinks before BF, or BF actually outpaces COD, I'm like, why not. Battlefield became a huge name that it wasn't two years ago, and the hype is real strong. At the very least the gap between the two will be much smaller. Even more so with BF5. And if BF doesn't overwhelm COD, Battlefront will.

Small install bases will inevitably make the gap closer ( assuming BF5 and COD 20011123) are next gen only. Plus, I feel you're severely underestimating the BF name. The BF name was huge before it even hit consoles.

What will be interesting is seeing if console Gamers warm to the BF experience now that it is about as close as is it is likely to get to it, or if they just try to COD it up and play mostly the generic TDM type stuff.

BF4 won't beat out CoD.

The majority of the CoD crowd enjoy the CoD experience for a reason. BF4 would seriously need to be dumbed down for the CoD crowd to take BF serious.

Just look at the most voted maps in CoD history.....CoD players hate large maps.

Very true, but BF now has that dedicated TDM aspect to it. Which I assume is where team56th based his opinion on, mostly.

If the X1/PS4 upload feature works as well as promoted, YT, Twitch and Ustream will have a ton more videos to sift through.

Currently. people have to make some effort to video capture and then upload from their PC. But a console friendly method will have lots of people uploading useless clips every day just because it's easy to do.

Didn't think that way, but that's possible. But I do believe that BF has had an audience of its own, and it's growing bigger than ever. Most BF games are still conquest or rush anyways.

I happen to have a harbinger of the future sitting right in front of me as I type, a preview of things to come. Oddly enough it's an Xbox 360, original SKU, with a hard drive, stuffed to the gills, with free downloaded digital content, as well as some that I purchased at a cost substantially less than it's hard copy equivalent. We already order our music and movies and television content digitally, and the future is to be able to access any game we want to play the same way. It's a luxury already enjoyed to some extent by computer gamers, and, in the next ten years, will come into it's own for console gamers. For those who haven't tried it, free games with Gold will be an enlightening experience. Indulge yourselves, and embrace the future, because the future is now.

Open worlds and MMO aspects added to games. I think we're going to see these popping up all over the place.

I am hoping Sub HD menus go away and that developers learn how to create magical code that smashes out observable latency.
