Not numbers, just personal experience. For me was snes vs genesis, first one I can remember well. Kids getting literally beat down for saying they like snes better haha. Genesis crew was alpha as hell despite being smaller!

Snes vs Genesis vs Turbo Graphx 16/PC engine

EDIT: how foolish of me to not include the 3rd option which was a good console as well(especially if you got the imports)

PS3/360 or SNES/Genesis because outside of those two generations, there was a clear cut winner. Xbox was nowhere close to PS2 even if you combined DC and GC. N64 and Saturn weren't close to PSX, PSP for as good as it did wasn't anywhere near the DS. Vita isn't anywhere near the 3DS, the Wonderswan and NGPC weren't anywhere near Gameboy, etc, etc.

This one so far. With todays social media even journalists are jumping in. It's almost at political levels of bullcrap.

Corporate console wars: Nintendo and Sega (SNES vs Genesis)
Fanboy console wars: MS and Sony (360 vs PS3)
On the sidelines for decades spectating with a hot dog in one hand and a beer in the other: PC gamers

For me it was 360 and PS3, although that's probably thanks to the Internet and having more knowledge of gaming consoles. Back during SNES and Genesis, I only had an SNES while a friend had a Genesis. Even still games were games then and looking back I didn't even care what system it was I just enjoyed gaming. These days it's so easy to get people riled up it's part of the fun in gaming.

I think 360 vs PS3. A lot of people will probably say X1 vs PS4, but this "war" just took it too far. Lot of people who should be charged with war crimes.

For me it was the Xbox vs PS2. Xbox was such a dark horse back in those times and we felt like an underground revolutionary movement. After the Dreamcast failed it felt like nothing could stop the PS2. I picked up an Xbox when KOTOR was released and loved it ever since. It was a cool experience because for the first time many of us were playing multiplayer games on a console.

360 vs PS3 was a fun console war because in the beginning no one thought that the 360 was even next gen at all. Everyone wanted to wait for the PS3 and when that finally released it was hilarious. PS3 is brown, has no games, what the cell is going on? etc.

SNES vs Genesis. I remember even back then in 1990 when I was in 8th grade the console warz going on in the "Prodigy" Internet forums were just as brutal and every bit as intense as they are now.

Never experienced any real life "console war" talk. Grew up with Nintendo mostly dominating, but don't remember anyone saying anything bad about other systems.. some had Genesis, was cool and fun to be able to play a different machine at their house.. same with handhelds.. mostly GameBoy but someone brought an Atari Lynx to school and people just thought it was cool.

Maybe I'm slightly too old or something or I just grew up with people that didn't dork out on consoles for one reason or another.

As far as the internet is concerned.. all console wars pretty much suck.

360 vs PS3 was great because it was such a tight race all the way through and Microsoft was the great underdog story trying to take down Sony who just dominated two generations. Nobody thought it was possible. That gen was flawed though because the 360 had a year head start and was always cheaper. It was still a great win for Microsoft in the end. Whether they sold more 360s than PS3s doesn't matter. They took Sony's market share. Mission accomplished.

Xbox One vs PS4 will go down as the best because this is the gen that either Microsoft or Sony truly earns the crown. Two companies that have been doing this for over a decade. Both coming off a great showing last gen. Same release date almost. Similar pricing. Similar specs. All bets are off this gen. We've got two gladiators going at it. There will be no excuses in the end this time.

But what if Wii U drops to $200 or less? Can it make a comeback?

2nd place maybe. I got Xbox One coming it at #1. Sony and Nintendo battling to not finish in 3rd.
It may get interesting soon. Nintendo already has a $219.99 Skylanders bundle. All it takes is another $20 and there's Wii U at $200 + a game included.

Such a long war for nothing. Pretty sure this one will end up the same.

I unfortunately disagree. I don't think the Wii U is going to make it past 20-25 million units this gen. I think it's going to end up a failure for Nintendo at this point.

And unless Microsoft manages to pull off some clever business strategy, I see a clear and decisive defeat by the PlayStation 4 which will probably outsell the Xbox One by 20-30% margin after the first year (my prediction). All thanks to Don Mattrick's absolute stupidity.

As for the best console war? I'd say the last one. The 360/Ps3/Wii generation is pretty much the golden age of gaming IMO. And every major competitor was relatively successful.

At first, I was going to agree with Ketto and say either PS3/360 or SNES/MegaDrive, because they were close races and pushed the hardware makers to really compete for the hearts of the public.
They were both close races, but the SNES/MD one was fiercer. The PS3 struggled with a lot of poor games and inferior multiplats early on, while the X360 was crushing early on, then later, the PS3 started getting awesome exclusives and MS pretty much dropped all support for the 360 long before the X1 was even announced.
The SNES and MD were going hard from day 1 til they died.

The PS3 and 360. However, the PS3 at the end had better looking games thanks to 1st party developers. This generation, both consoles will be trading punches. MS should keep Crytek on a leash, otherwise Sony's 1st party developers will have them beat.
