Why aren't there many demos? Major Nelson answers...

I really can't remember the last time I wanted to download a demo to game.
Some people don't so do. I have often made my purchase of demos before., as well as not purchasing after playing the demo.

RE5, Too human, for instance. After playing the demos, I decided not to purchase the full game. Save me money.

True, I'm a pretty good judge when it comes to if a game is good or not without the need for a demo, but I can see why others might need one.

I'll only download demos I have a interest to play. Not necessarily buy, but at least mess around with. I always download the FIFA demo every year, but have zero intention of buying it no matter how good it is.

For those of you confused about demos, the game store section of the dashboard now has a column called Demos or Popular Demos. This definitely wasn't here in the first few weeks. They must have tweaked the store layout.

The demo column matches the pic someone posted a week ago (sorry, I forget who it was), where batch two of X1's had different instruction manual sheets and its dashboard was already tweaked with the demo column.

I guess that update a few days ago did it for the guys who got a batch one console.

That wasn't there on Day 1. It definitely came with the update and I think it was McMasters that posted those pics.

I find demos useful for smaller titles that have middling reviews but good word of mouth. They definitely help me make a more informed decision. I find most demos for big established AAA titles to be of little use.

Without the mandatory call for them there is little incentive to produce them. They do cost time, money and resources. All one need do is look at how it was on the PS3 last generation to see where this is heading.
XBLA and Indie games had mandated demos. Retail games did not. AFAIK, there are no indie or XBLA games on Xbox One yet, is there? It's a bummer they removed the demo requirements for XBLA/XBLIG, but there must have been a reason for it. It's not like MS had to pay for them. Maybe developers didn't like the mandate and maybe some couldn't afford to do so, and was digging into their pockets too deeply?

Developers did not like the requirement and Sony set a bad precedent last generation.

as i look through my achievements, i can count 15 games that i wasn't planning on buyiing at all until tried the trial.

i did a huge amount of gaming with xbla, but if this continues, that probably won't be the case going forward :(

For big name AAA games, I don't need a demo. I can already tell if it's good or not. Also, big name games have reviews quick in case I need more info. But for XBLA/Indie style games that are hit and miss and not reviewed promptly (or ever), demos and trials are a must. They might only be $1-10 games, but still.... I don't want to waste a few bucks on a garbage game.

If it's up to the devs then I don't think we'll see to many demos because only a few months ago the research into demos found that games that put out demos sold considerably less on average to games that never. I think well start seeing demos come out a couple of months after the games release. I noticed that yhe demos were coming out less frequently on the 360 since that report was published.
I agree because of playing demos I almost did not buy the game
and, for me that happened, a lot
I loved the game, but hated the demo
