why do people worship a bunch of self-centered phonies?

Various reasons ... excitement/stimulation; association with someone "special" makes them feel special; lack of anything else to idolize; the culture supports it; something to fill their time and talk about....

Like Anderson stated, gives people something else to worry/think about.

Well, I don't know anyone who really "worships" a celebrity. I can't speak for 12 year olds who scream about Justin Bieber. I think it's likely a mix of appreciating their artist output and physical attraction being expressed as worship.

On the other hand, I really like Kanye West's music. I don't worship him, and I agree that he says some questionable things. I don't look him up or trawl the web for his every move, or read his interviews. But I do check the songs whenever he releases new music.
I also don't get why people hate him so much. I have friends who say and do ridiculous things that would probably earn them hate if they were broadcast to the world, too. s***, I've said some arrogant or offensive things in my time.

Cause John Cena's my hero. He fights evil.

Jealousy mainly.

Shrine to Kanye West in Li Tan's home am confirmed

Name a few of these "phonies," and state what makes them 'phony.'

Not a few, but practically most the entertainment industry these days. If you really want to name names though, Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence qualify as being very fake.

How does Jennifer Lawrence qualify as being fake?! Have you ever seen any of her interviews? She has got to be one of the most "real" celebs.

I want to be a self-centered phony. Sounds like a good time.

lol, such weirdness.. that article actually mentions Marilyn Manson? Haha.. even in 2009 he had been irrelevant for years.

Bunch of hyperbole.. for one.. it's nothing new. Legions of fans creamed themselves for The Beatles 50 years ago.. if anything, certain levels of worship have lessened.. from being fairly commonplace to being something you'd make fun of (LEAVE BRITTANY ALONE!)

Yeah, celebs get a pass for a lot of stuff.. they are also under the microscope more than ever, are just as likely to be demonized as to be somehow "glorified."

And your average person isn't spending much of their life at all obsessing over celebrities.. we can quickly read a few things and appear up to date on some lame gossip.. that isn't obsession.
