I do think certain sites are more critical of Microsoft's games. While some of Sony's 2 hour artistic experiments are lauded with superlatives even if the gameplay is nothing special or takes a back seat to the art.
When every other so called next gen game that also holds tightly to the past scored in the 90's. Neil Druckmann literally added a box that you push around and climb on in Uncharted 4. That's it. Oh and Drake has a rope now. 93/100. Would have been a 94 if someone at the Washington Post didn't write a troll review that brought it down a point. Bloodborne 92/100 even though it's just Dark Souls with a new coat of paint.
The scoring this gen has been biased and that's coming from a PlayStation fan at heart. There's no other way to put it. If Gears of War gets points subtracted for being Gears then Uncharted should have points subtracted for being Uncharted. There's no way a game the caliber of Gears of War 4 is an 85. Not here, and not in another universe. Single player, co-op, Horde, the best multiplayer for a console game. No way. The Coalition adds dynamic weather effects, which added to the gameplay like we haven't seen in Gears yet. Neil Druckmann adds a f***ing box to UC4 and it's GOTY. Get out of here.
Obviously, you know all of this menace. You've just defected as a Gears fan and are probably happy that Gears 4 didn't score as well as previous games. In your mind it deserves it and that's fine. But if you're going to call out games for not reinventing the wheel then keep it consistent. That's all.
I haven't defected at all. I am still a huge Gears fan. My reasoning for not owning the game is the same reason a lot of places docked points.
I am not an Uncharted fan, but my understanding is that UC4 is a continuation of the last-gen series. Gears 4 had the opportunity to truly evolve and move past the superb games of last-gen, but they didn't....they didn't have the balls and just used the past as a crutch.
That doesn't mean it is a bad game, the beta played solid enough. Everything looks solid, but also seems very familiar. I think 85 is a fair score for the game, it shows it still has plenty of quality and content, but shows its disappointment at not being more than it is.
Well, it IS a fantastic game, IMO, and a lot of sites have awarded it 9- 9.5. I was a bit annoyed initially for the same reasons you are, but after playing it, I've fallen in love all over again... well, once you get past the DeeBees in the beginning.I haven't defected at all. I never said it was. It's a great score. My point is that in light of everything that Gears 4 does so well, it does deserve better than that.I think most of you have missed Menaces original point. Since when is 85 a bad score? Simple answer. Never. 85 is a great score.

Wait…….you give Uncharted a pass by saying it’s a continuation of a last gen series, whatever that means. And then say Gears team didn’t have balls by using the past as a crutch, da fck.
Uncharted 4 is awesome but it brought nothing new. It just did what the franchise was always good at like great storytelling with fun action set pieces coupled with a beautiful coat of paint. Gears 4 was developed by a new team and the fact that it came out as well as it did is an achievement in itself. But you wanted something entirely new and radical which I think is an unrealistic expectation. You really do remind of mainstream review sites who praise Uncharted 4 and then are down on Gears 4. Both excelled at what they do best and yet one is praised for it while the other is penalized by it.
85 is by no means a joke. However, I don't think that Gears 4 warranted it either. It's one thing to have expectations, it's another to hold a game to them in any kind of official review capacity. It's a crap assed way to review a product for a couple of reasons. One you are docking it for something it's not, not something it does or doesn't do well. It's not even tangible and it means very little to your reader/viewer outside the well...it coulda shoulda been something different. It's a self-centered bias. Why are your ambiguous expectations of what something should be more important than what the devs want it to be, or that matter, the expectations of the other fans? Lastly, keep reviews focused on real, tangible concerns related to gameplay and content. Gears 4 has no major technical concerns, has a really good campaign, and a bevy of cooperative and competitive options. Hell, it should rate higher than the others for the fact that its multiplayer actually works, meaning the weapons actually work for once. 85 is no joke, but it has enough content and does it so well, that it warrants better than that.
I do want to unpack this a bit. I think there is a misunderstanding of evolution here, as in evolving happens slowly, incrementally over time, not sudden sweeping changes. However, Gears 4 has come in house to its own studio, introduced a new game engine, new weapons, new enemies, new cast members, new game modes, and has a new competitive push. I'd say they've made quite a few changes while paying homage to its heritage. Additionally, there really isn't any strong evidence that drastically changing Gears' would actually result in good ideas, let alone benefit the game. Ironically, the parts of the game that players are indicating they enjoy the most are the parts that harken back to the past games, not the newly introduced elements, save some of the new weapons of course. Expectations are one thing, but it's hardly a reasonable metric for review purposes.

My Gears Gamefly should be in today or tomorrow. I'm a sad panda that I don't have an S and a 4k TV.
I'd go 4=3>2>1
2 beats 1 for the worm level alone!
I'm speaking of Campaigns. Didn't do much MP.
Me too PV but I rocked this game on an LCD and still thought it looked great. My Gears Gamefly should be in today or tomorrow. I'm a sad panda that I don't have an S and a 4k TV.
Trust me you don't need a 4K TV . this game looked freaking beautiful on my 24 inch 1080p gaming monitor . You won't be disappointed . there were points I was like how in the hell did they pull this off on the hardware in the Xbox one. I can't even imagine what kind of visuals they will be able to pull off with the Scorpio. My Gears Gamefly should be in today or tomorrow. I'm a sad panda that I don't have an S and a 4k TV.
Looks like i won't be able to enjoy the multiplayer much longer. Well competitive anyway. Apparently ever since i hit 70 and got a gold medal next to my name i'm being paired up with MLG clans. Yet, my teams still suck like they always do. Gears has always been awful trying to play with randoms but this is just ridiculous. eSports ftl, i want to rack up kills on scrubs. Come on Coalition.
I went from 1.35 k/d to 1.23 in no time once the competition ramped up. It was okay having a trash team in Gears: UE. At least when your stupid teammates get knocked off 15 seconds into the round you're facing a 1 on 3 situation. instead of a 1 on 4. Oh well, if i have to play social matches or only play competitive when friends are on whatever. Gears 4 cause it's 4x the frustration!
haha, you're pissed off that you're getting rekt by players that are better than you and are blaming the game. Hysterical.
