What can we expect from Gears of War 4 running on Xbox One X?

Mike Rayner: The first and probably most noticeable improvement is, of course, that we render the game at native 4K resolution. Not only does that mean a 4x increase in our native rendering resolution compared to 1080p on Xbox One, but it also means much higher resolution textures across the board – from characters to environments, visual effects, everything! Bringing that incredible level fidelity to the console for the first time, which so far has really been limited to top-spec PC rigs, has been incredibly exciting for us.

One of the exclusive features for Gears of War 4 on Xbox One X is the ability to run 4K HDR with Wide Color Gamut Support. We supported HDR on the Xbox One S, and 4K on PC, but this is the first time you can play Gears of War 4 with a combination of that incredible 4K fidelity and the vibrant contrast of HDR. It’s really something else.

Solid system overall. It seems MS really listened to complaints. Not all the games look great I hear, but the ones I've played look incredible. Forza 7 has the best cleanest image quality I've ever seen in a videogame bar none.

I'm super hype about backwards compatibility as well. I've test out a few games and noticed an immediate improvement and we're just getting started.

I'm mobile but want to share my feelings towards my X purchase real quick.

Design:

+What a nicely designed piece of tech...its powerful small and sexy especially the Scorpio edition and i dig the weight very premium looking/feeling.
-Don't like the slight grayish tint...needs to be blacker.

Packaging:

+Nicely snug each accessory and i like the black innards of the Scorpio edition.
+Nice HDMI wire as well.
-No headset for chat with a premium console!? Wth

Visuals:

+Gears 4 looks great in HDR and what I'm guessing is scaled 4K.
Star Wars BF2 has me strongly considering a double dip even favor it over the True 4K PC beta i played.
-Gears 3 looks sharp but sloppy in motion.

Audio:

+Gears 4 in Atmos is great! The character talking sounds like real people talking in different areas of my living room wow.
-Sounds get a cracking/sound fading out somewhat when actions get hectic at times.
-No Atmos with Star Wars BF2 makes no sense!

More to come including my score...Will edit after i try the uhdbr player etc.

I have a similar experience. I will just comment on yours since I agree for most of that. Design, while I like the gradient, and I understand the look they were going for with the Scorpio version, from a distance it looks like dust is on half of my console. I also agree bummer on no headset included like before. Fortunately I have my other one that came with my original Xbox One. Regarding Audio, no cracking/fading sounds on my end.

The entire console does feel premium, especially when it is mated to my Xbox One Elite controller.

With that being our focus, we’re running at 4K 30FPS for Campaign/Horde, and 4K 60FPS for Versus with adaptive scaling to ensure a rock-solid frame rate that fans expect from our head to head multiplayer. Many of the improvements to Campaign also make it to Versus and Horde, including 4K, HDR, higher resolution textures, improved draw distances, and Dolby Atmos Support.

I only play Horde/Campaign, so I am getting the native 4K at 30fps. I won't be playing versus, so won't see the 4K adaptive scaling and 60fps.

I love this Frikkin' thing! Having my games get upgrades has just been awesome. I like looking through my library and realizing I haven't checked out a game that got an upgrade. It's like a little mini birthday present!

I never had such an appreciation for good Image Quality. It just feels nice and solid. No. more. Jaggies!!!

I'm more impressed than I thought. The image quality actually improves the gameplay for me. Targets in the distant are easier to see and shoot at. Play COD WWII enemies are much easier to see and to target their heads and those dogs are also easier to pick up down the map. Same in Halo 5. Visual effects like fog look much more realistic. The clarity and shift in resolution has also just created a much bigger game space. I don't know how to describe it, it might be due to my poor vision, but the games have more depth.

Console looks nice

Controller feels a bit cheaply made (at least mine does) with the seams on the bottom corners not being flush, sticking out and feeling sharp, it also creeks a lot like it's going to break. That said I do like that all of the buttons are the same color, I just have to train myself that X is in a different spot than it is on the DS4 lol.

So far the games I've purchased that are enhanced look very nice, not regretting buying it at all so far for 3rd party games.

Bought Gears 4 just to see the graphical improvements, IQ is nice but damn this game just isn't any fun. I guess the whole jump behind cover, roadie run to more cover and bullet sponge enemy thing has gotten old to me. I'll finish it because I bought it but I'm not enjoying the experience, that is obviously not the consoles fault though.

I find the share experience to be sub par compared to the PS4, it also won't recognize that my twitter account has been added and only gives the option to upload pics to XBL or One Drive. Also they only allow very short 4K clips to be recorded and they can't be shared directly from the console in 4K, you'll need an external HDD that you can take from the console and connect to your PC for that.

Storage is going to be a problem, the console is already $500 and 1TB is not enough space for games that really take advantage of it. You almost have to buy an external HDD which means another $120+ so the buy in on this thing really is over $680 if you factor in XBL Gold and you'll need to add even more for another external storage device if you want to share 4K video content. If you already have external storage devices for an xbox one than you'll be fine but if you are buying into the Xbox ecosystem for the first time this gen like I did be prepared to spend quite a bit just to get going with this thing.

So far I'm enjoying my time with the One X, I don't regret buying it at all.

So far so good. I just restarted Witcher 3 with the enhancements. It's beautiful. AC Origins is unbelievable. I hope Battlefield 1 will get enhanced. Now bring on Red Dead.

Really good value system. This console is such a different experience from past consoles because of all the updated graphics and performance on games I already own. Even on a 7 year old 1080P TV, the improved IQ is noticeable.

I think what this system does is adds value to a lot of the things Microsoft has already done. Backwards compatibility is more relevant since the graphics to old games holds up better now. Knowing that more updates are coming to games I already own gives me something to look forward to despite the lack of new stuff scheduled to release after November.

Even on a 4kTV, the IQ streaming shows through the X looks better.

I like it now. Looking forward to seeing these games on a 4K HDR TV.

Gonna tag a bit off of what Val started with.

Packaging
The packaging is better than it used to be. MS had spent too much money on packaging, making it all pretty. They almost were trying turn the packaging into the boxes you get with Samsung and iPhones. WE have to pay for that. I would rather it come out of the price of the product because I will end up tossing the box once I know I am keeping it. Sony gets it right with KISS, barebones cardboard. MS could try to focus on even bringing down the cost of the packaging even more than they have.

Design
The design of the console is the best design that MS has ever had for a console in my opinion. It's better than the packaging they do because this is a VERY simple, small design for what you get inside. Sure they laid out the back of the console to match the S, but I am a freak and I end up pulling all the old cords out and put in the new cords. I want new, latest and greatest. Not gonna hook this up to OLD. I have no use for the stand that came with it, but it is a nice option for the design. Who knows maybe it will come in handy one day. The console, while supposedly smaller over all than the S, seems nearly identical in size. I have it sitting on top of my PS Pro now, and it's crazy how much deeper the Pro goes back behind it. (I flushed up the front). I don't like that we don't get a head set for a "premium" console, but I wouldn't use it anyway. But would be nice for others.

The controller is an Xbox One controller. Awesome quality, great feel with the artificial texture on the grips, blacked out buttons. You just can't go wrong with these controllers.

Sound
Everything sounds great, but I am using a Sony sound bar with subwoofer for "simulated" surround due to the space I have available in my condo. Because of that, I don't notice much change from my Xbox One S due to my limited audio hardware. I did watch the free movie about surfing in 4K UHD on this and it sounded REALLY good even with this sound bar.

Performance
Regarding the dash, it would have been nice if it was native 4K, but I understand the freedom of resources and I support that. It looks great, but not as sharp as the PS dashboard. Sharp as is clarity, from fonts to edges. The guide pop out is insanely fast, and that is where spend all my time. I mean it's instant, no delays and I have everything memorized. Lot's of features in that flyout. Substantially faster now than the PS Pro to access those things so long as you access them from the guide. As for the actual dashboard, sure it's faster than it has been in the past, but I am not entirely sold on the layout. I don't know what I would do different. I don't have a use for the custom sections that we can add/remove from the front page. I guess I just wish I had one main page. My pins, community and Xbox Store. Then just remove the other tabs. I spend most of my time in games and in movies, so I don't need the mixer tab for example.

Game performance, well not sure what I can say here that Digital Foundry hasn't already said....and the rest of you guys. I have played:

Gears 4
COD WWII
Assassins Creed Origins
Cuphead
Forza Motorsport 7

since I got my Xbox One X and they are all looking awesome. Best looking things I have seen on console since I got pong back in the 70's. The performance is great as well. I have noticed that Forza Motorsport 7 doesn't load the tracks any faster, but I will assume that is because they are loading 4K assets now.

The console start up from hibernation or complete shutdown doesn't seem any faster. It's super quiet and I never hear the fan kick in either.

I have not used the 4K UHD player yet (I only have one UHD, John Wick 1) but I will check it out soon. I do know that the 4k movies and shows on Amazon prime look.....:surprise::surprise:
