Analyst Richard Swinburne recently tweeted out the following prediction about Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) next Xbox game console:

He predicts that chip giant Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) will provide the combined CPU and graphics processor chip for the next Xbox game console, displacing rival Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), whose chips powered the Xbox One, Xbox One S, and the latest Xbox One X.

In this column, I'd like to do two two things. Firstly, I'll go over why Intel has every strategic reason in the world to try hard to win the Xbox. Secondly, I'd like to assess Intel's odds of winning the design.

Why Intel would want inside the Xbox
Game console chips don't tend to be the highest-margin processors in the world, but Microsoft sure sells a lot of Xbox consoles each year (per Statista, Microsoft sold 9.1 million Xbox One consoles in 2017).

At, say, $100 a pop, 9.1 million Xbox chip sales per year would amount to nearly $1 billion in incremental revenue for Intel -- not a game-changer, but certainly a nice boost that Intel stockholders would probably appreciate.

Beyond the immediate financial impact for Intel, though, winning a future Xbox console could be strategically very important for the company.

Firstly, if Intel were to supply the CPU and graphics processors for the next Xbox, game developers would be forced to optimize their games for Intel's processors. Most game developers already optimize their games for Intel's CPUs to some degree since they're the most popular among gamers, but I'd expect Intel processors to get even more love if they were inside every Xbox sold.

More importantly, though, remember that Intel is trying to enter the market for stand-alone graphics processors. Right now, game developers have very little incentive to optimize their games for Intel's graphics processors because they're not used to play graphically intensive titles.

Even if Intel were to roll out high-performance stand-alone graphics processors, it still has a long road ahead of it in terms of working with developers to get the most out of its hardware.

If Intel were to supply the graphics processors for a console like the Xbox, game developers would, practically overnight, make sure their games were finely tuned to work well on Intel's graphics hardware, and those optimizations would probably carry over to some degree to the PC versions of those games.

Intel could become a highly credible gaming graphics processor vendor for PCs as a result, something that could drive both increased revenues and profits for the company beyond the direct benefit from the Xbox chip sales.

How likely is this to happen?
Intel develops excellent CPU cores, and that plus its EMIB packaging technology (which allows the company to efficiently stitch together different types of chips onto a single chip package) would be clear assets in trying to win the Xbox spot.

Intel could also supply key components like NAND flash and Wi-Fi chips for a future Xbox, allowing it to offer Microsoft an attractively priced component bundle.

However, Intel faces two problems. Firstly, AMD has successfully supplied Microsoft with multiple generations of Xbox chips, so displacing a trustworthy supplier isn't going to be easy.

More importantly, though, it's not clear yet if Intel can deliver graphics processor technology by the time Microsoft needs it to launch a next-generation Xbox. Intel is, of course, working to improve its graphics technology, but AMD has more experience in high-performance graphics, and Intel could have a tough time trying to offer credible competition to AMD within the next two years.

Over the long term, Intel could very well find its way into a future Xbox, and it might even be possible for it to win the next one, but based on what the landscape looks like today, I wouldn't bet much on that happening.

Own it in switch, hardly ever play it though except when having friends over. It just doesn't grab me like it used to in the snes days, I don't think the series is any worse today but somehow the fun got lost for me.

Would you say it’s better or more fun than the 360 version? My niece and I still play it from time to time

Strangely enough never played the 360 game, prob played most games on that system except Bomberman lol
Playing with friends and the hugely enjoy the switch game, so maybe it's just me idk

You ever play that game online? Those guys that play all the time are ridiculously good.

That write up about Intel found in the next Xbox.....very unlikely. AMD been a solid partner and Ryzen tech pretty solid.

I am sorry but Xbox has had enough time. It has been in the console industry for 3 generations. They are not new to the industry and have no excuses.
That's cool. In my opinion, I am enjoying their direction now and I like their slate of games they had and what they having coming.

Imo today's 3rd party games are more than enough to get by with one console. I bought a ps4 to play uncharted 4 and Yakuza but considering I play primarily multiplatform games on my Xbox because of controller, friends and achievements, it didn't really make much sense after finishing those games. I sold it.
I will buy one when shenmue 3 releases though (if this gen) and prob play God of war at the same time.
But yeah, too many multiplatform games in my backlog to really be bothered with lack of first party Xbox games right now.

That misses Ryan Mccaffrey's point though. Obviously Microsoft let their first party get real weak but the point was about how Sony wasn't always this strong and they didn't build it over night. If Microsoft is committed to doing the same we might not see the results for awhile.

That is just a poor excuse. Like the pevious poster said, they have had plenty of time. Where is the investment in the studios? Where is the freedom of creativity? There isn't even a sense of progression.

Look at the games released: Sea of Thieves is a shell. Gears of War is basically a carbon copy. Ryse was a massively delayed X360 Kinect game. Titanfall was a third party game and was never meant to exclusive. Forza Horizon was just the same old in a new place. Forza Motorsport is just getting worse.

They only really have 2 exclusives you can give them credit for, Sunset and Quantum Break.

If they aren't prepared to invest in new studios then nothing is really gunna change.

Nailed it but Forza Horizon 2 and 3 are fantastic games.

Microsofts the only first party to have made heavy investment in new AAA Studios this generation. They are also the only one to have made any serious acquisitions

There is no question that it has been poor but if they have had a change in the past couple of years and are really committed to improving their first party we wouldn't see the results today. What we have have today is the result of what started late last gen when they just coasted on multiplatform and an occasional exclusive while letting studios go or shutting them down. They weren't invested then. They may be now but its not going to happen overnight. I doubt they are going to give their studios much freedom though so I wouldn't expect that.

They claimed to be comitted to improving their first party before this gen even started.
