PS4 Pro Discussion

I am toying with upgrading from my 16 month old Fat PS4 (uncharted trilogy bundle) with a Pro mainly cause I am planning on going to a 4K set when I replace my beloved 39" Sammy LED. BUT I will not be getting said TV till probably end of the year, will the Pro play any different on a older non 4K set or am I just blowing extra $$$?

PS I heard the Pro works very well with Sony VR compared to PS4 non pro, I may be getting VR before said 4K TV so I have that going for me.
Pro upgrade non 4k here. So far I've only played Nioh as far as recent exclusives go, but for example in that game if runs closer to 1080p/60 most of the time vs regular PS4. Nier Automata also gives you 1080p/60 instead of only 900p I think on PS4. I'm sure going forward that will continue so yes I think it's worth it. And like you I'm thinking of VR and that should get a good upgrade with the Pro.

Does anyone else's pro make a buzzer (best way to describe the sound) like sound when turning off at times? It's the second time I've heard mine do it, it's pretty loud.
Negative. Only noise I hear is the power beep and fan.

The below link is a great resource for what modes / upgrades are available by game. Any game with higher resolutions should offer some level of supersampling on a 1080p set, providing some added detail or better aliasing. In addition ,some games straight up have 1080p modes offering different performance than the 4K mode. In addition, a "Boost" mode was just released yesterday that can offer improved performance in older games that don't have "Pro" support. A large number of games that have been tested in Boost mode are listed in the below link as well.

That's cool. Sounds like the PS4 Pro is really starting to show it's benefits. I might have to pull the trigger and pick one up soon along with a 4K TV. If Horizon is anything to go by, i'm going to be missing out big time.

good news I got the money for my Fat PS4 bad news no stores in my area have any Pros in stock I may have to buy online good thing I still have my One S

Pro is so good. My initial reaction of it not being much of an upgrade was completely wrong. It's a worthy upgrade.

*sniff sniff*
I LOVE that new console smell, quick Q other than the light bar integrated into the touch pad is there any other major changes to the DS4 2.0? I still have mine in the box as I am still rocking my gray 20th Anniversary DS4.

It's supposed to have a faster response time while plugged into the console or something.

You got the Pro? I think my Pro came with a thicker charging cable for my DS4 2.0, but I could be wrong. It does support USB playing now, where the original DS4 would only charge over USB, but not play as a wired controller.

I have been playing while charging since PS4 released. Not sure what you are speaking of as new.

It's my understanding that the DS4 2.0 acts as a wired controller while plugged in and charging, bypassing wireless controller. Where as the original DS4 apparently was charging while connected, but it acted as a wireless controller still.

The controller part behind the the face buttons is now matte instead of glossy. The triggers are gray instead of black as well. I'm guessing both cost cutting features? I do like the added light on the touch pad although can't say I've really used it for anything yet.

Yup, don't have one but saw it at a friend's house and was surprised. I'd compare the jump from vanilla PS4 to the Pro on par with the 360 on a standard TV before going HD. It makes a big difference. 4K gaming is going to be awesome.

Do many games use the touch pad?

At least the recent games I've played its mainly been used to access the inventory system in games, or swipe to choose different items that are equipped. I think with the change of the select button to take pictures and video the touch pad has now become the select button.

Indeed. For example, in Nier Automata, the track pad pulls up the map in the game. Though I don't ever seem to use swiping much on it. I know I used Sixaxis tilting in Everyone's Gone to the Rapture. Not even sure why they bother with the sixaxis anyway.

Horizon makes nice use of the pad allowing us to set the HUD to dynamic. A quick swipe of the pad briefly brings the HUD up and then disappears for full screen glory. I think everyone who is playing Horizon should be playing with the HUD set to dynamic.

I had no idea that feature existed, I definitely will be doing that.

Only reason I found out about it was from some video I watched about the game as I gobbled up all media in the lead up to Horizon's release.

News to me, thanks! Wish they would have brought that up in the tutorial or something.

It tells you in the loading screen hints. You don't even had to swipe it, just barely touching the touchpad brings up the HUD.

dumb question time are there any games that REALLY look good on a Pro compared to the normal one? Also when looking at TVs I saw a few 4K sets but how can I tell that they will really work well with the Pro?

Horizon is probably your best bet especially when it comes to HDR. As far as I know the biggest differences outside of that is more likely to get 1080/60 out of a game on the Pro vs lesser on regular.
