2013 VGX discussion thread.

Saw this elsewhere, re. the "Definitive Edition" Tomb Raider. Old Lara on the left (supposedly PC max settings), new Lara on the right (next gen consoles). Not that it's worth $60, but it's a nice upgrade.

I would love it if they made "Definitive Editions" of GTA 5, The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series.

No Man's Sky, The Division, and Quantum Break all look good, especially No Man's Sky. And with the awesome games starting to pile up on the Wii U including the new Donkey Kong, I'll have to break down and get one eventually.
Not gonna lie, The new Donkey Kong may have sold me on a Wii-U, Fo real!

Tis kind of crazy how it looked like they've upgraded Laura's features but the rest of the game looks primarily the same. I'll have to see a few more clips of the environments and enemies before I can affirm a purchase. Laura looks life like though. So good.

I always said I'd buy one once the games were there, and now with Zelda, Super Mario 3D World, and this game, it is time.
Super Mario World too. They both looked really good. How the HELL am I going to explain buying three consoles to my wife?! She may suggest counseling after this....damn.

lol yea I only have a PS3 and PS4 right now. I'm sort of glad there is a little drought on PS4 exclusives until early next year because I still have a backlog from hell on PS3. Now that I think of it, the same for the PC. Throw in a Wii U sometime soon, and then an X1 later next year.... I give up.

They are claiming some significant improvements. Here's something from the executive producer:

"Getting our gameplay up to native 1080p meant increasing all of our texture resolutions by over 4x so the details and nuances can be seen in their full glory. However, it’s subtleties like our subsurface scattering technology — how we manage realistic lighting effects through solid/semi-solid matter — that we’re so proud of..."

"...trees whip in the wind; even cloth moves courtesy of new, more sophisticated physics modeling. Weather effects lash the island with unprecedented levels of venom, and rain particles are dynamically lit as they slice through piercing searchlights. The in-game cast has also enjoyed an upgrade — characters and enemies alike have been enhanced visually, while in-game destructibility has been given additional refinement ...."

"However, as always, it’s Lara who’s the star of the show. As such, one of our boldest changes was to handcraft an all new, even more realistic head and face model for her, taking advantage of the increased power of PS4. This is our first glimpse of our next-generation Lara. We also drastically improved shader and lighting effects, adding dynamic sweat, mud, and even blood for a new level of visual acuity that reacts on Lara in different situations. Objects on Lara’s person like her climbing axe or arrows now independently react to her movements and sway or jostle with an obsessive eye for detail..."

"Lara’s hair now benefits from TressFX technology — her hair strands are independently simulated and interact with environmental effects, as well as react to her every movement, delivering unprecedented, lifelike motion. This all-new Lara is Crystal’s first steps towards the future. It’s a promising, compelling beginning."

Just caught up on all the VGX stuff, glad I didn't watch it.

So the big news is:
Telltale now are working on everything.
Destiny is a Halo MMO with capes and magic.
Titanfall is MW2 + Mechs.
The Division and Witcher 3 look very nice.
Quantum Break looks like it has a game element too.
Square Enix really want you to buy more Tomb Raider.
Everyone loves the new token indie that didn't really show anything that new or interesting mainly because of the art style?

So, video games! Right?

OOH! I KNOW WHAT I'LL DO!!...I'll buy the Wii-U for her. She loves her tablet and games on that all the time. The Wii-U would be right up her alley. Then I'll buy Donkey Kong and Super Mario World and just ask her (nicely) to play them on her Wii-U. LOL. Sometimes I impress myself!:D

She's f***ing smart though...and knows me like the back of her hand. It's worth a shot at least.

No, it's the promise of free exploration in a sci-fi universe, and the fact that the dev team aren't first-timers. Art style seems fairly unremarkable to me.

Right. I'm sold. Thanks Anderson mate. :)

Cool. Looks like I have something to add to my Steam wishlist.
I forget what the dev said, but he said something about the game being in two parts. One is early 2014, the other later in 2014. Not sure why. Maybe has to do with one character's story being released first, then the other later in the year.

Even in huge studios, many say that only a few are allowed to give their input into the game. Hello Games is small but they are comprised of super skilled veterans from Criterion Games, so give them all those money they got from Joe Danger series to outsource workforce-reliant tasks and it's quite possible. Still it looks fantastic. Just fantastic.
I wonder if this game will be a $15 download. It would be amazing if they can pull off a fantastic game like this for DLC prices.

i laughed when htey were moving from one spot to another and joel stopped behind a pole and was like "i think this place here is fine" lol

Joel did some good stuff but his success rate was like 10%

Looks like a nice upgrade to me, I agree with you on wishing for a definitive edition of GTA5 too.

I wish no mans sky looked better. The graphics definitely bring it down a few notches for me.
