Assassin's Creed Unity pushes the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to their technical limits, according to creative director Alex Amancio. Speaking during the latest episode of Major Nelson Radio, Amancio boasted about the game: "We really harnessed every ounce of power from both these consoles as much as we could."

One way Unity pushes things beyond what was possible in previous entries in the series comes down the number of simultaneous on-screen non-player characters it can support. Amancio said past Assassin's Creed games had 200 on-screen NPCs, but Unity pushes this up to 5,000 or more.

One scene in particular boosts this even further to an incredible 10,000 on-screen NPCs, Amancio said. And these characters aren't windowdressing. "These are real AI NPCs," Amancio said, adding that you'll be able to interact with each and every one.

Unity also features advancements to lighting and shading, which together will allow for a "completely new layer of realism," Amancio said. In-game textures and materials also benefited from the beefed up horsepower of the Xbox One and PS4, which will now react to light sources as they would in real life.

Another step forward is the fact that Unity features no loading within the game's virtual depiction of Paris. This means you'll be able to seamlessly walk into buildings, travel to the Parisian underground system, and launch into missions.

On top of this, Amancio says that one in every four buildings in Unity's version of Paris features a fully fleshed out interior with characters to meet and objectives to take on. These buildings have so much detail that tables are even set with forks and knives, Amancio explained.

What's more, Unity's version of Paris will feature most of landmarks you'd expect to see, including their interiors, Amancio said. Overall, Amancio explained that "the list goes on and on" regarding the technical prowess of Unity for new consoles.

"We could not have made this game [for] previous-generation consoles," he concluded.

The game will run at 30fps, but the final resolution has not yet been confirmed. In October, Unity senior producer Vincent Pontbriand said the game would run in 900pacross Xbox One and PS4 as a means to avoid "debates." Ubisoft has since released a statement that clarified that the final specs for the game have not been confirmed.

Unity launches November 11 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Another game, Assassin's Creed Rogue, will also be released on that day, but it's coming to Xbox 360 andPlayStation 3.

So lucky! Being digital I have to wait until tomorrow. Luckily I will be able to co op with my daughter once I can play.

Well, that takes care of that. I assume that the PS8 and Xbox TWO will be out soon?

Yup, now that Ubi' gone from having to dial it back, to straight up killin' it in a matter of months I don't see why not. This gen be done...

Holy crap....already? I watched some videos and well..yeah it looks nice, but not....oh my f***ing god i am falling off my chair.....nice.

So next gen consoles have already been maxed out after a year? I would say I was disappointed, but in order for that to be true, I'd have to be surprised. :D

This game is going to be awesome, I could have got it on my PC for the better experience, but opted for the PS4 version. Currently pre-downloading.

Although after playing Shadow of Mordor (GOTY for me), I doubt this game will compare in its combat system, but hopefully will make it up in content.

i actually believe ith with GoW thought as it was on eof the best looking titles last gen.

For sure. Still, the difference between Gears 1 and 3 was huge in my opinion. Same with the difference between AC1 and Black Flag. So while developers are obviously going to push the consoles as hard as possible, graphics will still likely improve dramatically through the generation.

This game world must be pretty huge.

The key part of that statement(Assassins creed) is "as much as we could." In 1-2 years they will be able to extract more.

Yep, people need to take everything in when they read something. Doing what they could makes sense given this game was in development before the consoles even had final hardware, it's still a year one title.

Developers keep coming out with such tagline, probably because they think most gamers are Joe Simpleton, or Mary Gullibleson.

They have a point. How else do you think they can pull off stuff like claiming Cinematic black bars, 30fps is cinematic etc.

They're working you guys good. They say they reached the max now, but next 1-3 years they'll talk up all the visual advancements they put in like the most groundbreaking techniques had to get whipped on out.

Holy mother of god, now we are talking. Utensils on table! talk about details not possible on last gen.

I bought it on my X1 instead of my ps4 and I am finding it to be gorgeous. Keep in mind the technical aspects always take second place to art design for me so I'm not counting frames or pixels. I just came off a marathon of the 360 ones and it looks next Gen in comparison.
I am guessing the ps4 version will win the comparison on df so Sony fans can enjoy it too. :p

Assassin's Creed: Unity performance reportedly choppy and glitchy on all platforms

"I would like to warn anyone thinking about buying this game,” said thewouldbeking. “I got it with my Xbox bundle. I just started it, and it runs sub 30 frames per second constantly. I would advise to wait until its fixed or not buy it at all. It is practically unplayable.”

In terms of technical execution, the game is an utter shambles on PS4 -- I can't speak first-hand regarding other versions. Glitches abound, responsiveness is laughable, the context-sensitive detection areas around interactive objects like key mission items and reward chests are patchy and inconsistent. The crowds are impressive, the game does a fine job of creating a visually engaging representation of Paris, but the framerate is horrible. Lengthy jumps see Arno hang in the air, crippling slowdown is everywhere (especially if you get into cover), and although the free-running repertoire and animation sets have been massively expanded, its not uncommon to see the framerate juddering down below the 15 fps mark.

UPDATE: It seems as though there may be framerate issues across all platforms, with NowGamer reporting Xbox One issues as well:

I guess that's what happens when your maxing out the systems...

Inefficiently perhaps. Issues on the PC too...

Assassin’s Creed Unity is officially out today in the US and as people start to receive their copies, reports of atrocious performance across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC versions, are starting to come in.

Dealspwn are reporting glitching, pop-in, and massive frame-rate drops in the PS4 version. Something which is also reflected on the PS4 sub-Reddit, with multiple users reporting similar issues.

The Xbox One version appears to also be having some technical issues, according to some users on the Xbox One sub-Reddit.

The PC version, despite scaling well with high-end PCs, was not spared from similar issues on less-powerful ones.

All of these issues could very well be fixed with a day one patch. Though at this time Ubisoft has not said that there’s going to be one.

I have seen some slow down here and there in the three hours that I have played, I would hardly call it unplayable. The performance of Alien was far worse for me, still loved that.

edit: Perhaps the extreme slow down is pre patch? I have had these instances only a couple of times, it is very smooth otherwise.
