Xbox One dev Black Tusk pairing with Microsoft Research on unannounced project
Black Tusk Studios and Microsoft Research are pairing up on the former’s mysterious, unannounced game, as confirmed by Phil Spencer. The Microsoft Studios boss has also shed some light on what to expect over at Tokyo Games Show next week.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Spencer shared some wafer-thin insight:

  1. Steve Burnley @Steverulez
@XboxP3 Will you be announcing anything new or showing off already announced games at TGS? How was Black Tusk game btw?
Phil Spencer @XboxP3
@Steverulez Collaboration between Black Tusk and MS Research is leading to very interesting gameplay mechanics. Gameplay is looking great.

11:53 AM - 10 Sep 2013

The game was shown running on Xbox One via this teaser clip, and it has been teased as the start of a whole new franchise exclusive to the format. It looks like a shooter.

Spencer also added that he’ll be meeting with Japanese developers while at TGS next week, and that D4 and Crimson Dragon will appear at the show. There is no Microsoft conference as such, but he added that there will be new playable content on the event floor.

What are you hoping to hear out of TGS next week? Let us know below.

Isn't Microsoft research code weird for "Kinect"?

damned auto-text... weird=word.

Anyways, I hope it's not the case but I'd say temper your expectations accordingly.

From what we've seen Microsoft Research is knee-deep in Kinect, they created the SDK for instance. We know it's not illumiroom because that was deemed to pricey of an add-on for the console and we know it's not Forteleeza glasses because that really wouldn't have anything that would affect gameplay like Kinect would. So, yeah... fingers crossed.

I just hope by "interesting gameplay mechanics", he doesn't mean: raise controller for shield, tap head to activate visor etc etc.

I wonder if the focus of the partnership might be finding a way of really highlighting the cloud rather than Kinect.

Microsoft Research != Kinect .. Why would anyone make that assumption.

Because Microsoft has been trying make Kinect work for years (mostly fruitlessly). So much so they made it the centerpiece of the Xbox One.

Hit up google, type in "xbox" and "Microsoft research".

It's not exactly a huge leap in logic to piece together the kinection.
I'm not saying it's 100%, but if it was the case, would you be surprised?

Was thinking the exact same thing.

This to me reads as Black Tusk pairing with Microsoft on unannounced Kinect feature set project

In my humble opinion the Kinect needs to stay as a controller accessory and nothing more. I don't think any game especially a first person shooter should be using the Kinect as a fullbore controller. As for voice commands and small gestures I think that would be awesome (but even then--Make it an OPTION).

Otherwise leave the Kinect for menu navigation, dance games, workout stuff, party games, etc.

Its not a huge leap, but to assume/imply that Ms research only does Kinect stuff is silly. Ms research has come up some of the most amazing tech I've ever seen

I really hope it has something to do with the Fortaleza glasses. I'm still hoping it hits the stores some day.

MS Research is not restricted to Xbox. This could be anything from graphics to cloud computing.

This game BETTER be good. Exclusives have a bigger monkey on their backs to carry because they represent the console/company. Not that all exclusives from any console are good but at least those are the games fanboys use as ammo when they are arguing against the opposition and it's AAA gems.

Isn't this the same game shown at the reveal or E3? Splinter Cell-ish. Or it counts as "unannounced" since it had no name to it?

I see in this thread nobody actually follows MSR like...at all. They do a LOT more than just Kinect stuff. Tons of cloud stuff as well. The display planes in X1 were researched by MSR, as was their neural network for voice inputs and translation, tiled resources/rendering, cloud compute for games, new ways to do textures in games, ray tracing, etc. All sorts of brilliant projects are underway there. Several are related to Kinect, but many more are related to other applications in gaming.
