Bloomberg: Jim Ryan stepping down from PlayStation leadership

Why would they? He’s going out on a high note, but does feel a bit odd that it kinda feels out of the blue.

I’ve seen some conspiracy theories that he’s not fond of Sonys pivot towards GAAS.

I’m actually surprised he isn’t keeping his foot in with some role like chairmen or something more like of an executive producer to keep as insightful input…

Oddly enough travel was one of the main reasons Hirai stepped down.
Most people bitch about a 45 minute commute to work and I can see why lol I can't imagine having to fly across the world every week. You can't really relax like that, I'm sure that job requires a lot of after hours stuff at home as well. To fly from London to SF is over 11 hours, same from SF to Tokyo, I don't think I'd keep that up for 6 months. Staying in one place for a week isn't long enough to relax and decompress.

As far as the focus on GAAS I'm sure a lot of the studios would rather not be doing that and I'm sure many are having a challenging time doing that if it's not the type of thing they are used to. Hopefully that focus will change a bit but it's too early to know one way or the other.

I do think the article that Schreier put up the other day was worded poorly though, talking about how not even Bungie could get the service thing working for their other studios yet, they haven't released any of those games yet lol and most of them started development in the last 2 or so years.

I thought Jim did a good job. But this PS5 generation feels a bit off.
Seems more corporate Sony than it does PlayStation. It’s like the mom is calling the shots instead of letting its child be independent, let the peacock fly Sony!

Jim was and always been more business like ken kutaragi, he got handed a good thing and kept it there, even if most fans didn’t agree with what they did price wise. He’s definitely not a ceo with charisma or a hypeman/face of/for PlayStation….I guess he’s more of a butter face? 😆

Alot has been made of the alleged Sony studios pushing back on Jim Ryan's GAAS push but I don't think he was wrong to try. If you look at some of Xbox's GAAS line up which include:

Sea of Thieves
Halo Infinite
Call of Duty Warzone
Overwatch 2
Diablo IV
State of Decay 2
World of Warcraft
Elder Scrolls Online
Grounded
Fallout 76

Jim obviously wanted to stay competitive in all genres. Sony has the single player narrative genre down to a science. But again with the cost of development ballooning, they need to make sure they cover all their bases.

Everyone still wants their own Fortnite, Sony kills it at single player games and I hope that never changes but they do need a little more variety in their portfolio. They've relied on COD and other 3rd party MP games to take care of that area for them but with other companies starting to buy these publishers/devs up they can't count on that option always being there.

Well, we are getting a horizon mp mode/game, which was their bread and butter before, even if it wasn’t a huge success in that area. But horizon definetly had a bigger following that would help kick start it.

Personally I have no interest in that but we'll see, maybe not having to be Aloy will make it more fun lol that last game really turned me off to the IP though.

I put 100 hours into it...I don't remember what happened. Just like every other game I play. I bought the expansion last month, but haven't started it yet because I'm too lazy to take the disk out of the case.

I didn't like Burning Shores either, only bought it to see the if they did anything better than the base game, the story was rushed and honestly I felt like I wasted my money. To be fair I was almost guaranteed to feel that way lol so I knew it going in. I don't see myself buying another game with Aloy as the lead.
