Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy

Figures, the whole thread is about whether it's exclusive or not.

Looks like a fun throwback. Crash was one of the first games I enjoyed on console, playing with my then-stepdaughter. She was a brat, but I sure enjoyed our play sessions.

I'm not sure how much I'm into pure platformers, though. This and Yooka Laylee ... they look fun and charming, and yet, how much do I really want to go *boing* *boing* and spin around and smash boxes for 20 hours (or I guess 60, if it's a trilogy)?

It's about that cause Sony are not giving a straight answer ;)

CB was the first PS game I played.

I think it will be timed exclusive for a year. Not sure if I will be getting it at launch since I have Crash 1, 2, 3 digital versions that I bought during the infamous 99 cent PSN flash sale 4 years ago.

PS. If you have a PS1 physical copy of Crash Banditcoot lying around, I think you should list it on Amazon/eBay right now when it's still going for an insane amount. Once the collection is out, it will cut down the resale value of PS1 copies.

It's about that because it's an Xbox forum. ;) Xboxers want to know if they'll be able to get their hands on it.

I figure we'll hear at E3.

All these is it isn't in exclusive stuff tend to start on Gaf which definitely isn't a Xbox site ;)

Yeah, a lot of the news items here seem to come from GAF. Difference is, GAF has tons of discussion about the game and some wrangling about exclusivity. Here, it's all about exclusivity and little or nothing about the game. Go figure.

well if no one else talks about it that's how its going to be.

But its a re release so not that much to talk about other than how exclusive it is.

I think a bunch of us said it doesn't matter if it's exclusive or not. I'd bet about 70% of this forum buys it on PS4 even if it's not exclusive.

Especially if it is a year and even then other formats might just get digital only.

GAF has 6 or 7 long threads full of discussion about the game.

I can keep going with this, but let's not.

From a hands-on preview:

"We were able to play three levels, all taken from the third game Warped. We have to say that the motorcycle racing level really felt just a bit too old school, almost like a SNES era bonus games. But the other levels are so different to anything else today, or even at the time, that we found ourselves happily engrossed by the very precise movements needed to combat the largely static enemies.

"Speaking to producer Kara Massie later we were told that the game does not use any of the original programming code and had to be reverse engineered almost from scratch. That seems like an awful lot of work, but the end result is very impressive."

I didn't realize they had to rewrite so much code.

This is from the producer. He's talking about how there are over 100 death animations, as an example of how much content there is in the original games.

"They didn’t have to do that, but it’s just one of example of how Naughty Dog always went the extra mile with these games, to make them fun and joyful. And there’s so many different enemies too, the original team never, ever cut corners.

"So that’s one reason why I think they hold up. But they’re just good games. There’s tight gameplay, it’s got great flow in terms of platforming, and I think it also has the right level of challenge. I think there are lots of unapologetically challenging levels, and there’s a real sense of joy and accomplishment when you get through those challenging levels."

It'll be 30 fps, 1440 on Pro. Not sure if downsampled. Hope so. Disappointing for people expecting 60 fps, but I'm not fussed. As long as it's smooth and looks good, that'll be fine.

I'm still wondering whether I have interest in a pure platformer. It's been over a decade since I played one, and other attempts have left me bored. Otoh, I really enjoyed the "throwback to an earlier era, when games were just innocent fun" quality of Ratchet & Clank. And this will have a similar feel. So, I dunno.

I still think the series was and still is Sony's best platformer.

Ratchet and Clank is beautiful. But it's a shooter with platforming elements.

Look who's in the thread

I would put it ahead of it and it definitely had the bigger impact on gaming.

Hell... the Activision games last gen aren't as bad as you would expect

Ratchet and Clank was one of my favorite PS exclusives of 2016. Great game. Just pure fun. Anyone who hasn't given it a shot, should. I hear it's beautiful on the Pro and 4K TV. I will probably replay it, when I upgrade my TV.

This is straight up lazy on the devs part.

I don't know about that. R & C was 30 fps, and those were no lazy devs (Insomniac). Beautiful game, very smooth.

Am I out of line thinking this should be native 4k on pro?

Would've been nice, but we'll have to settle for 1440. Maybe they figured that was the best use of resources.

I'm still a 1080peasant, so I'm just hoping it's downsampled.

I'll put my Xbox hat on in the PS section for once and throw you guys a bone so people don't accuse me of being one sided. Why not.

Forget about the fauxK/30fps. Someone tell me why the hell i'd even want to play these games again? They weren't good on the PS1, like the devs just designed it that way because it was enjoyable? No, it was due to hardware limitations. Get out of here.

This is straight up lazy on the devs part.

I doubt it has anything to do with the employees work ethic. From what I understand the industry is filled with very talented workaholics. I assume it's more an artistic choice, or a budgetary one. Probably some combination of both.

Imo Jak, Sly Cooper and Tomba are much better games from Sony.

Its a PS1 game...it could of ran much better than it ended up.

I agree with Reinhardt. Calling devs lazy is a lazy insult. There was some other factor -- budget, time, artistic choice, choice to match the original's framerate, decision that the effort wasn't worth the reward, desire to put the power elsewhere ... whatever, something. But not poor work ethic.

Guys that work in the development field are anything but lazy. I'm lazy. I know lazy. Game developers are not lazy.

Btw, they had to recode most of the games. Not a small undertaking:

What we are getting is not a PS1 game that has been shined up. Rebuilt from the ground up using the original as a guide.

I loved this game when it was running at 10fps and it will seem to be running ablaze at 30fps. The time I spent into beating the originals was ridiculous. There are some really tough levels with some lengthy gaps between saves (maybe that's changed now). But such a solid platformer I can only think of how Rayman was inspired by this.
