This is 100% Epic getting political. They set a trap, and Apple walked right into it. Epic knew the outcome, and they knew that this is the perfect time, when Apple is finally already under the microscope. There's a lot on the line here, and Apple is about to get hit from many directions right now, with lawsuits and more. The EU antitrust lawsuits have yet to make a full impact on the hardware and software (they will), and now the US Department of Justice is just moving in on them too.

The thing that they are doing to Microsoft can also easily be seen as anticompetitive. They are trying to give the reason why Gamepass Unlimited (Project xCloud) cannot be streamed is because they are not sent each game for inspection before it gets streamed to their devices. This would be like them saying that Netflix must submit every piece of content before video can be streamed on their devices... Apple is now simply setting how far they can push their control.

I'm unsure if I should be mad about this or not.
Not if you were always OK with Apple being Apple. I've personally had a dislike for Apple since the early 2000s because they have been anticompetitive thouroughly and consistently. I actually like their products, but not their "ecosystem".

I guarantee Epic and Apple have been fighting over this behind the scenes for months. Megaton lawsuits like this don't just drop as a first resort.

That said, Epic has been planning this move for quite some time as well. Think about how Epic's multi-layered attack was so swift and perfected: Price drop -> Get banned -> File lawsuit -> Post 1984 video.

Also, the 1984 reference was made in both the video as well as the Complaint (legal document filed to start the lawsuit). And the 1984 video is a parody of Apple's own video of 1984:

Epic made some DEEEEP references.

Not sure if you saw the link I posted, but Business Insider also laid out a case that this was a carefullt planned trap from Epic. It definitely makes sense, given the timing of the lawsuit.... Love the 1984 video on their behalf.

  • Epic set its snare by intentionally breaking one of Apple's rules, offering Fortnite players an alternative way to pay for its virtual currency than through the App Store.
  • Apple's response of banning Fortnite is likely to help Epic win public relations battle — and served as a case in point for the lawsuit it immediately filed charging the iPhone maker with anticompetitive behavior.
  • The way Apple runs the App Store has come under increasing scrutiny, but Epic's suit, which lays out a damning case against the company, could be its biggest challenge yet.

Tim Sweeney just led Apple right into an, ahem, epic trap — one that just might cause the iPhone maker some serious harm.

Epic Games, Sweeney's company and the maker of the popular Fortnite game, is accusing Apple of anticompetitive conduct. And on Thursday, Epic showed the world how. By deliberately breaking one of Apple's App Store rules, Epic provoked Apple into flexing its unchecked power, providing Exhibit A in the lawsuit that Epic had ready to go.

Now, the other Tim — Apple CEO Tim Cook — has got to be shaking his head in wonder at how easily his company fell right into Epic's snare.

Google have removed it from PlayStore now as well. Thread title update maybe?

Translated: Epic should get in line & get extorted like everyone else.

30% cut in revenue (not profit) is extortion, dev everywhere need to raise up & give the middle finger. When giver tax you, they are at least using some of this money to improve infrastructure, healthcare, etc, & I am not even a big fan of government spending. But these people, they are literally lining up their own pockets.

This show that all of them are a gang. A few big corporations are controlling everything. What you see, hear, & buy, & well THINK.

We let it happened.

Whether you like Fortnite or not, they $ they get from Fortnite actually help game developers & gamers, & fighting for abusive royalities.
Every week, I get free games, assets from Marketplace, Megascane assets. No string attached.

I just hope they severed ties to 10Cent, who has link to the CCP regime.

Both Epic and Apple can eat large bags of d1cks. I understand taking a (small) cut as the price to pay for having access to Apple's eco-system and more importantly its large customer base. But 30% of every transaction is just ridiculous. And Epic calling someone else anticompetitive while securing games to be made available only on their digital store is laughable.

There's no white knight in this story just two super greedy corporations looking to increase profits. You're a fool if you hop on Epic's side thinking they care about you. And Apple ran out of fcks to give a long time ago.

This video is so HORRIBLE; I have to stop at 5min mark, & I am not a hater of Jimquistion, BUt watch some of his videos occasionally, but he is hit & misses, & did shady things to other YouTubers.

I few pointers,

A) Making argument using speculation, by assuming you know the unquantifiable (evil or selfish) intent which is unfortunately extremely common on the internet.

Every business, everyone wants to make more money, obviously, but you can want to make money, but also do things that are positive while making money. Shocking I know.

B) He said EPic charge develops less, but he said, its not his fight, who cares. Who is the selfish one here? Also, it matters. The more developers can keep their money, the more development can survive to make another game. This line of thought is just selfish.

C) The saving Epic made from non giving royalty to Apple & google is given as discount (permanently) to players. So let's be clear, we have a major platform owner that REDUCE price of their item, hs is complaining?

D) Make claim Epic is exploiting Fortnite fanbase for their won agenda ($). Again, another speculation. YOu know how many times people on the internet make outlandish false claims (some sort of evil) about me, then attack me how horrible I am base on these false claims. Jim is one of these people.

Epic is not perfect for sure, like link to CCP via Tencent. But Jim is so braindead (wait I am using speculation) with his hatred that he lost the ability to rationalize.

Hope apple gets done for this, 30% is a ton and I'm glad they're getting called out for it.

My oldest boy loves this game. I’ve played it every now and then over the years. Played a couple matches with him yesterday (he on Switch me on XB) and the game can be amusing at times I like the controls and shooting and then we run into people that just want to build instead of fighting. One match we got to the end was me against the last guy. He just kept building into the sky while I stood at the bottom waiting for him to engage me into a fight. He eventually headshot me with a sniper. I turned the game off and told my son “you have fun.” I can’t stand this game lol.

My son was asking me about all this yesterday. Looked up what happened and laughed. Boy 2020 ain’t playin.

I wonder what @Sunset would say about all this.

Fortnite has a very huge skill gap, that required players to spend time in training mode to get good. a lot of people are put off. But if you ware willing to spend time getting better at the building, you will be a reward.

If you want to just shoot & dodge, there are 100s of games out there.

The building part also adds mobility, not just building. There are also gears that counter people camping in builds like rocket launcher, stink bomb that does damage over time, forcing them to move, & well you can build to them & then have a box fight. There are a lot of technics, & many are very hard to execute. Its very clear if a player is good or bad. In other shooters, often you wonder if they are lucky or skilled when they killed you.
