In wake of TXB’s cannibalization by bots, it’s been almost a month since Union Video Game Forums opened, and within that short amount of time, it seems we’ve gone from high fives all around to forum fisticuffs. Okay, fists aren’t flying yet, but I feel too many warnings have been issued to keep discussions from reaching some real vitriol.

Why is this happening?

I’ve been a member here for a short while—we all have—and a majority of us were members at TXB for a long while. It’s nice to have a forum where everyone knows your (user)name; where posters have been contributing for years, brought together by a common interest: discussing videogames.

It’s not a fun place to visit when members are antagonizing other members; preoccupying themselves with the behavior of members at other forums; and, in general, just being jerks.

It’s unfortunate. Union VGF’s foundation may have been built from the bones of TXB, but that doesn’t mean it has to live out its precursor’s estrangement.

It’s disheartening to see personal attacks taking place, even if some members feel they’re innocuous. They’re still attacks. It’s upsetting to see quality threads derailed by members that aren’t even interested in the thread subject—they’re seemingly interested in only stirring up nonsense. And it is disconcerting to see Union falling into the same bitterness and backhandedness that, at times, plagued TXB.

We’re a better forum than that.

We have some great, knowledgeable, and passionate members. We have members that can’t wait to get their hands on the next-generation of consoles, all the while embracing the current gen. We have PC gamers. Handheld fans. We’re here because we love playing, and discussing, videogames. Everyone posting shares this commonality. It’s this aspect that makes us Union Video Game Forums.

So going forward, let’s respect our history, but let’s also embrace what makes this forum different: our union.

Thanks for reading.

Great post, blue. I feel like people can have their opinions on which console they like more but they must also hold a certain respect to others who don't feel the same way because if they can like one console more, why can't the other person?

I read this to a Hans Zimmer score and imagine Blue yelling this through a megaphone like in Independence Day.

Unless you want this places to be the next Gaf, we better do better. That's including me.

please don't make this the next gaf! Can't stand that place, I went from going there daily to once or twice a week at most. This is the only gaming forum I use.

I am new here but lurked TXB forums for a few years, I frequent quite a few forums and none have the friendly atmosphere like this one provides.

Good Job everyone.

The usual suspects, every time. Not sure why they were accepted here.

Anyways, viva la Union!

Well said, Blue.

I've got nothing to add, except that after 12 years at TXB, the continuing antagonism doesn't surprise me much. It's part of the magic that is (or was) TXB. But I completely agree that we should aim for something better here.

Hello. How 'bout that ride in? I guess that's why they call it Union VGF. [awkward laughter] You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when Plainview created this site, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Plainview joined in later. And soon after, this site introduced me to the rest of you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added 725 more people to my wolf pack. 727 of us wolves, running around the interweb together, in Union VGF, looking for video games and news. So tonight, I make a toast! Let's keep this site strong!

Have a good feeling about this site.

Z A C K, I know that feeling man. That part about Wolf pack was great.

Isn't there a way to block those certain members from posting in the sub forums they're causing trouble in?

This is why I mostly stay out of the tickle fight thread, it's extremely difficult for me to see someone say some really stupid s*** and not tell them that they're stupid.

You know I read that and can sympathize but the bottom line is we are not better than that (yet) because we are that.
I mean it's the same people from TXB why would you expect anything to change ?
I'm just glad not to have to deal with the bots to really notice the major douchebaggery going on and I have not been real active here yet.
If there is a problem I trust the mods to deal with it I just know i'm not one and don't plan to be one.

Look at this guy, causing problems. A real troublemaker.

I know what you're saying (I said it myself), but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some changes. Here's why. Environments, even virtual environments, affect people. People in trashy surroundings are more prone to act trashy than the same people in nice surroundings. There was something hopeless or doomed about being at TXB, with its neglect, outdated software, sense of being in decline, etc. But now, we have moved from a dilapidated old shack to a nice, new house. I think people will be more likely to act better, simply because the environment is so much nicer.

Second reason -- there is no choice, really. Plainview has worked hard on this forum, and he doesn't want it turning into a free-for-all crap fest where trolls and assholery is just part of the landscape. He isn't going to put up with that. Personally, neither am I. At TXB, the moderators spent all their time chasing bots, and a lot of d*ckishness and trolls were ignored. That's not going to happen anymore.

You guys can help by using the "report" function if you see something objectionable. No one will know you reported, if you're wondering about that. With 1000 posts a day, it's tough for moderators to stay on top of everything, so we appreciate your help.

p.s. I should add, I think people have been a lot better since we moved over here. I think the atmosphere is 100% better. We still have our occasional trolls, insults, and off-topic meandering, but *shrug* with such an active forum, that's pretty normal, I would think. It's much less than it was at TXB. Compare the atmosphere now to what TXB was like earlier this year, and it's night & day.

I haven't noticed too much, but I have seen that the Fanboy Tickle Fight thread is definitely a bit too rancid with insults.

Just curious what sections/threads of the forum is this happening because I post mainly in the multi-plat and offtopic and I see no such fistacuffs. :)

The majority of it seems to happen in the X1 and Tickle Fight threads, with some in the PS4 thread as well. Most of it gets deleted.

I suggest just closing the Fanboy Ticklefight thread and strongly discouraging that behavior. Even I have been sucked into a few times...that thread is just a cesspool that breeds ugliness which I think is seeping out into other threads. In shutting that down, I bet that those that come here solely to evangelize and belittle will soon move on when they find they no longer have a leg to stand on.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. I understand why the tickle thread exists, to try to contain that behaviour into one place..but it does tend to get personal, and it does tend tohave people trolling other people outside of that thread. I like the idea of just discouraging fanboy evangelicalism overall and just being gamers talking about games and gaming related stuff on a non personal, fanboyish level.

That's an interesting idea. I think the Tickle Fight thread was a genius idea at the time -- it saved TXB from sliding into a complete morass of fanboy bickering. But maybe it needs to be re-thought, now that we have a new forum.

We do need a place for the PS4 vs. X1 discussions, though. That's a legitimate topic, and people want/need to talk about it.

Posts in the Tickle Fight thread are given pretty free reign. Maybe we need to think about holding that thread to the same standards as we hold other parts of the forum.

I don't know, just thinking. I'll send out the bat signal, see what the boss thinks.

@Plainview

I didn't like it when Xbox fanboys tried to explain to me that I'm stupid when debating Kinect and the value of the X1, but at the end of the day, we're all gamers and we all have our preferences and we all work for our hard-earned money and how we perceive value is our own personal accord.

Opinions are like asses, everyone's got one. I do agree though, people should respect other people's opinions. We all have the ability to debate in a civil manner, the moment someone can't debate, they turn to insults because they truthfully can't debate.

Anyway, I think this place is night and day different from what TXB was. TXB may have originated as an Xbox site but this place should be a place for ALL gamers of any platform/brand/etc. This place truly stands out from every other gaming community.
