We do need a place for the PS4 vs. X1 discussions, though. That's a legitimate topic, and people want/need to talk about it.
I agree with that, but if it can't be done in an intelligent and mature manner what's the point? I mean opinions are one thing, but some of the spouting off and absurdity in that that thread has gone from being cute and entertaining to ugly and tired.

That's an interesting idea. I think the Tickle Fight thread was a genius idea at the time -- it saved TXB from sliding into a complete morass of fanboy bickering. But maybe it needs to be re-thought, now that we have a new forum.

Posts in the Tickle Fight thread are given pretty free reign. Maybe we need to think about holding that thread to the same standards as we hold other parts of the forum.

I don't know, just thinking. I'll send out the bat signal, see what the boss thinks.

@Plainview
I think you're handling that thread properly.

You should be a little bit more specific about what exactly you don't want here and what the consequences will be for certain infractions. Whatever you decide to do make sure it's something meaningful and clearly explained.

We've always had platform loyalists at TXB, but I think lately we've had a small gang of people here that have sort of dug in as a reaction to the criticisms of the Xbox One. They are ready to pounce on any source of information that paints their particular console in a bad light. I don't think there has been a non Microsoft/Xbox related source that hasn't been called a "Sony shill" at on point or another.

And of course, like you mentioned some people here will constantly reference one forum in particular as if it is some how exceptionally biased towards Sony. It's really no different from any other platform agnostic forum. They all pretty much feel the same way about these next gen consoles.

Plus, the people here who continue to mention that other forum are only drawing negative attention to the forums that might possibly cause a quick flood of server crashing traffic to Union (that other forum has a lot of people there). As I understand it Union is running on shared hosting so that wouldn't be a good idea at all.

Ok, so what do you do?

You can move every last post/thread about next gen consoles to the tickle fight thread to avoid any kind of dust ups. Or you can just stick to routinely temp banning people for personal insults because ultimately they won't stop doing it. All the people you are referencing have been temp banned multiple times.

I don't know how fair it would be to perma ban someone from Teamxbox for defending the Microsoft brand. It might work better if you could perma/temp ban people from certain parts of the forum. Like banning some people from just the Xbox One forum and allowing them to post in all the other topics.

So the boss says the Tickle Fight shall go on.

I agree. Normally I'd avoid the thread, but since I'm a mod, I have to hold my nose and read it. Most of it is people just trolling each other. That's really the only exception we make for that thread, btw -- trolling is allowed there, to a point anyhow. Personal insults are off-limits there, just as they are elsewhere.

You know, that's my regret about the Tickle Fight thread -- not that it exists, but that there is no good place here to have an intelligent, spirited but non-trollish, non-fanboyish discussion of PS4 vs. X1. Almost every discussion that enters that "versus" territory gets moved to the Tickle Fight thread, the place where intelligent discussion goes to die. So, there is really nowhere here to have a decent discussion about PS4 vs. X1.

Maybe we should start a parallel X1 vs. PS4 thread for people who want to have a respectful, intelligent, non-fanboyish, non-trollish discussion/debate about the two consoles?

The thread can go or stay. It doesn't bother me. If it goes, people will have to just adjust. If it stays, we keep it as it is, a cesspool of trolling with no personal insults. I think the mods here are doing a great job. I can't mod much anymore because I'm handling all of the other stuff. I have no complaints with how they're handling anything. Any warning or banning is made note of privately for all the mods to see. If anyone disagrees they state so. Not one single issue about any warning or banning.

How about a new console debate thread with a less provocative title and more structure? I really just don't see the need for a trolling thread.

In another month we'll be enjoying our shiny new toys whichever you choose. O if you're like me and getting both.

It's just a few people on both sides that try too hard to validate their purchase or opinion on why they made that choice. In the end no one really gives a crap what you spend your money on. Or at least they shouldn't.

I like the idea of a new X1 vs. PS4 thread, a place for people to have a reasonable, respectful discussion of X1 vs. PS4. It may be tricky to separate the two threads out, though -- that would be the main problem.

I'm not sure how I feel about eliminating the Tickle Fight thread. On the one hand, it is the armpit of the forum. But on the other, it seems to serve a purpose. Consider the fact that it is the longest thread in the entire forum (I believe). That says something about people's need to be exuberant fanboys, act superior, bash the other system, troll each other, ridicule each others' opinions, and just generally throw monkey poo at each other. It's a popular thread. People seem to enjoy it. Maybe there needs to be a place for all that, given our history, and given the fact that we're in the middle of console war season.

I misunderstood Plainview earlier. It sounds like he's open to whatever we decide.

I dunno. I need to mull it over for a while.

The Fanboy Tickle Fight Thread is the funnest thread on this whole site. I don't see a problem with it as long as we aren't personally attacking each other.
Agreed. In my opinion, the thread is full of comedy and really isn't an issue as long as insults aren't thrown at each other.

I don't see how that would work. You banish a guy from the X1 vs PS4 thread to the Tickle fight thread? I don't see how he doesn't feel like he's sitting at the kids table. Maybe rename the tickle fight thread console wars thread. Give it a more serious sounding name, IDK.

I'd like to hear Ketto, Bunz, etc. weigh-in more about these next gen consoles and the new info, but I'm sure the tickle monsters will be calling Ketto a fanboy everytime he says anything bad about the X1.

Do mods have the ability to ban people from specific threads?

That happens all the time, actually -- we move a discussion to the Tickle Fight thread. Sometimes it's just a post or two. Sometimes it's a whole thread. Yeah, it feels a little like, "Ok, you kids go play outside now."

As far as I can see, we have three choices:

  1. Eliminate the Tickle Fight thread
  2. Establish new guidelines for the Tickle Fight thread and turn it into a kinder, gentler, more respectful "versus" thread.
  3. Leave the Tickle Fight thread as it is, but create a second thread for people who want non-fanboyish, non-trolling, monkey poo free discussion of PS4 vs. X1.

I vote option 3. People are going to be fanboys either way. It could be contained in the tickle fight thread or it could spill out into forums. We came from a site called TXB, but that didn't keep sony fanboys from trolling the GXD. The fanboy tickle fight thread needs to stay. If people cant stand other people bashing their platform, simple, stay out of the thread. I get a lot of enjoyment from watching over zealous fanboys get taken down a notch.

Wait until the systems launch and see how things are then.

There just isn't that much else to say "seriously" about these consoles at this point. And it's almost an impossible task during the lead up to a console to keep things civil. While I don't get into the silly mess of the thread I don't think the thread is/was a bad idea or anything. The "single news story" threads are more civil because of them.

Either way serious or not for the most part it's all just gotten repetitive.

Maybe once the systems are actually out a serious heavily moderated "comparisons" thread might be cool. A thread with a big oft updated OP with a consist list of game comparison links, dev comments, etc. And a corresponding thread with heavy handed rules.

3. Everyone in the tickle fight thread will migrate over to the PS4 vs X1 thread. It will take a while before you get the thread cleaned out fully. Do you have the ability to ban users from individual threads?

Nope. I don't think we could prohibit people from posting in the "reasonable" thread, as long as they were being reasonable about it.

I think you've touched on the main problem, though, which is keeping the two threads separate.

It's obvious that the only people that really want it to stay are what you might call it's biggest "contributors". Yeah the thread can be ignored if you don't want to partake, but it just seems to reflect badly on the site as a whole imo.

And there would be no need to. That's the beauty of mature conversation.

@Plainview

The forums I used before I moved to TXB (they were the old segadojo forums from way back) had a good way to keep that stuff separate, it was called "The War Room".

It was an entire forum, much like the separate xbox and ps forums where all threads of any console war type were to be posted. Any thread or post outside of that forum deemed console warrioring resulted in an immediate 24 hour ban, 3 times in a week would be a week long ban, continued posts like that outside of the war room was a complete IP ban.

At first everything was tolerated even the nastiest of personal insults but eventually, when the 360 really started taking over mind share, the PS fanboys that ran the place locked down the personal insults and eventually nixed the forum altogether, now those forums are long dead.

I personally would be all for a war room forum. Just so long as it's labeled "anything goes, don't cry about how you're treated and DO NOT BRING WAR ROOM STUFF INTO OTHER FORUMS OR YOU GET BANNED, PERIOD".

This has to be a great Idea because it's only like the second time I have agreed with IDLE!

We need a console war section where you can go and play...how is the thread with the most participation bad for this site? I like the anything goes counting out the normal stuff that isn't aloud.Maybe make it where you can't flat out call a guy stupid but say "what you just said was some ignorant s--t"

The one thing I loved about the teamxbox forums is in its hayday was the fact that you better back up what you say or your going to get called out on it. People forget when it was the first xbox when you even dared to say it could challenge nintendo and sony you had to deal with superdude and his band of misfits.

The tickle fight thread is at least needed because regardless of what you want to believe...this is one of the few places you can defend anything MS does and not get bashed into oblivion....period.

I think that's too broad a brush. Take our friend Tony Clifton, above, for instance -- not a troll or a fanboy, but a normal and nice chap whose funny bone is tickled by the Tickle Fight thread. I think there are probably a lot of people like that -- people who find the free-for-all kind of entertaining.

The consequence of having a "tickle thread" is that Astro has sort of developed a following here as an "expert" on the Xbox One. And in some circles the more open minded posters like Bunz and Ketto are considered "fanboys".

If you banish him from the thread you'll have claims of "neo gaf like" bias. There is just no way around it. You can't have the thread without him.

Yeah, that's generally the function the Tickle Fight thread serves. I don't think we need a whole subforum devoted to it, but I agree that we probably do need at least one thread.

I also see that thread the most when I google...alot of interesting stuff comes up in that thread besides the fanboy garbage.

I can take it or leave it. I like posting in there for entertainment value, but honestly I, like jester, would love to have mature versus conversation without the usual suspects turning it into mudslinging. But whatever is chosen I will go with.

We wouldn't banish Astro or anyone else from posting in a particular thread. I don't think that would be fair, and besides, we don't even (afaik) have that capacity in the software.

As long as he (or anyone else) is posting in a non-fanboyish, reasonable, respectful manner, all is well. It's really not that hard to do.

I suppose as long as it is confined to that thread I can live with it. Still, doesn't reflect too positively on the Zeitgeist of this forum that it is the most popular thread.

At that, I've made my thoughts and concerns known and will move on, leaving the issue in the more than capable hands of our mods.

I have to disagree....it would be nice to have a subforum so you can discuss differant topics and it doesn't get lost in 20 post about how dumb you are for liking RYSE and then the post on how everybody in the tickle fight thread are ignorant for being there and how sad it is that it's the biggest thread on the forum.
