Driveclub developer Evolution Studios "had confidence" that the socially-inspired PlayStation 4 racing game wouldn't be impacted by the kind of significant server struggles that it's facing currently, according to director Paul Rustchynsky.

Rustchynsky has been busy on Twitter responding to questions about the game's online state. In one tweet, he assured fans that Evolution "did performance testing prior to launch & we had confident in the servers then." Asked to clarify what, exactly, is wrong with the game, he said: "We've got no limits to the amount of servers of the quality of hardware; it's purely down to the server code having some bugs."

Another high-profile console game, Battlefield 4, underwent a successful and smooth beta test before launching publicly and facing serious and significant server issues.

Rustchynsky also says that Evolution has not ruled out offering some kind of compensation for early adopters, though it remains to be seen if this would be in the form of free DLC or something else. He also had no update to provide regarding when the free PlayStation Plus version of Driveclub would be released, but said fans can expect a "new update" on the game sometime later today.

On Friday, Evolution again apologized for Driveclub's online woes, adding that it was working "non-stop" to help players get online "as soon as possible."

Driveclub players who can connect should not experience any connectivity issues during their play sessions, Evolution said last week. However, the studio has implemented a one-in-one-out program to manage demand, meaning you aren't able to connect until another player disconnects. "This is obviously not ideal, especially given that there are a lot of players waiting to connect, but that's how it's working right now," the developer said previously.

The part about staying connected once connected isn't exactly true. A few times I've actually been able to connect I will see the message appear while racing that the connection was lost, or just general slow ass loading in the Social aspects. Sucks not being able to help the club but otherwise I'm still just playing solo races so meh. Give me a free car or something.

They have an unforeseen bug affecting the servers. People have gone so overboard with this issue, the meaning of patience has been lost on some people.

The game was delayed almost a full year. I and many others have waited to play a game that is missing features, a patch for weather? lol wtf is that even about. They show a game for over a year racing in the rain etc, but guess what, fvck you, you don't get that.

Not to mention online is complete ass. What is this 1999?

I had fun with the single player, but online is where its at. I can definitely understand some of the rage. I was never completely sold on DC, but I had faith in evolution and they let me down. It's cool though, I'll just rent whatever their next game is in 4-5 years, bc they'll probably be patching this one for 2 years I'm sure.

Problems happens but this is ridiculous and they should be ashamed IMO.

DriveClub isn't exempt either. People have been going in rage over all the FH2 server issues where people couldn't get their DLC nor their VIP status and earnings. People wanted to boycott MS for life.

They might have made some progress on this game. I started it up and it popped up with a bunch of stuff, a car since the last time I was online, a ton of club stuff, and added what appears to be all the points I had accrued in solo to the club.

It IS weird that so many of the features responsible for building the game up (replays, social online, and weather) have been showcased as long as the game has been in view.

It is boggling that REPLAYS aren't in. One dev said they delayed the weather because they aren't done getting things like the different windshield wiper patterns just right for each car. That's just silly.

And the rain drops on the car were just mirror images on top of that.

I'm pretty sure that picture you are referring to wasn't from Drive club. I believe it was accidentally included. From Project Cars, I think.

Sony is probably fighting a PR battle here. It was probably an unexpected shock that Driveclub online is failing. That is what Beta testing is for, and Beta testing also gives an idea of how many people are interested. Did Sony not do this, or was the fact that this is the first brand new AAA game to make it to PS Plus on launch the unpredictable factor in how many people would pursue this game?

Weather and replays were announced recently in 2014, NOT 2013. de3d1, frozpot, introllovision, and kvally are spreading the same wrong BS about Driveclub all over the forum.

Servers are working ok since the 1.03 patch, although some features like challenges are disabled.

Rain is not mirrored on the cars in the gameplay footage. More BS.

Most people that bought it are enjoying it.

The developers did say the beta tested and in their tests, everything was ready to go. But when you hit REAL WORLD, I am sure they ran into unexpected scenarios, snafu's and bugs. Sadly, we never really see software ever get released bug free. Seems nearly impossible.

Good to know, thanks! Even when I get DC, I would never have noticed anyway when I am driving at 200mph :)

lol, everyone is trolling this masterpiece! How do you have an annoucement for replays??? What is that even about lol. Racing games from the late 90s had replays.

Did you buy it? I did, even after seeing it only got like 72 on metacritic with a 5.xx underscore, still bought it. Believe it or not, ppl aren't going to have great things to say about a game that scored low. From your perspective EVERYONE that scored it low in the reviews or is saying bad things must be a troll. I'm sorry this exclusive happens to laid on your side of the fence in the consolewarz! Keep fighting the good fight for daddy sony.

That guy still posts? I thought they were banned. I blocked them awhile ago, so didn't realize they were still present.

From DriveClub Facebook...looking like they almost got the issues wrapped up:

After more successful upgrades and updates to the servers today, performance continues to improve and more of you will be able to play online together.

We're still working, and will be around the clock, to keep improving social connectivity and online play, and we are pleased to say we have also added in friendly leaderboards now.

We will have info about more updates to the game and the servers soon. In the mean time, while this work continues, we are also paying attention to all of the feedback and comments you're sharing with us too - so please keep sharing so that we can keep improving the game and giving you more to play for.

Props to Evolution for being transparent and keeping us up to date on social media.

I have heard enough about this game and since I love most racing games I want it. All these delays will work perfect in my plans as they should have everything on the servers square plus weather/replay updates done by Christmas. I can wait....not only should I be finished up mostly with FH2 but I bet we will see some $30-$35 Black Friday deals for Drive Club.

Their delays are my win.

Been waiting to play this online once you bastids finally have the Plus version.

consolewars... Ease up on deed, froz and kvally. They're not exactly xbots like the mentioned intelli. They're actually good posters.

Not only that, but piecemealing games is not a trend that I like.

Turn 10 was blasted for shipping Forza 5 incomplete. And rightfully so. Although that was a rushed launch game.

Shipping DC without replays and especially weather is ridiculous. Most of the great gifs or other media featured weather effects or wet surfaces.

I think the game is fun and I want it. But not for $60. And not until the game is complete.

There's plenty of legitimate gripes about Driveclub. Lack of content, online issues, PS+ delayed, etc.

But some people are just making things up. Weather was revealed a few months ago and never stated to be available at launch, not in 2013.
