Gear VR consumer pre-order now live!

Lucid thanks for posting your hands on impressions. It's very refreshing to hear real world thoughts explained with your imagery in words in comparison to all the conjecture of another VR thread here!

The Gear VR being used for evil.

If anyone did this to me, I would go postal.

They should have stopped the camera to the doctor's head for the true VR experience! Or better yet, the babies!!

"Oh No De-ah! Oim comin' ooouuuutttt!"

I Just found out my Wife got me the GearVR for Christmas. Great news, but the wait is killing me :(

Nice! Gear VR will be a gateway drug for many people on the fence. Positional tracking, high fidelity/framerate and hand tracking will eventually lead you to this:

Aussies don't sound like that!... Ok, Aussies from Western Australia, Queensland do, but they're all feral anyway. :p

I assume that yanks either sound like Kourtney Kardashian or Donald Trump for some reason, when reading forum posts.

And Kourtney sounds like she speaks whale.

In other news, got to try this at the Samsung Flagship store today! There was a shark video, where you're in a cage and great whites are swimming around. Was amazing! And then they took my photo and photoshopped it onto a magnet for me with someone dressed up as a phone.

All in all, best day ever!

Didn't get to try any of the games though.

Does the helmet adjust for the different sizes of the phones?

Bellybama, you've said so many hilarious things over the months. But this one, omg.

Trump has a very strange manner of speech. Not many Americans sound like him.

- I know the following from articles and youtube vids-

The headset only works for the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the Note 5 (I have the Note 5), and those don't vary in size much (my Wife has the S6), though I do think there is a slight adjustment.

Once you plug it in, it boots up the special mode it runs in, so you can't just use it for things not supported by that software. There is a work around, however, as you can angle the plug up and snap the phone in behind it. If you do this, you can use the Google glass apps and games, but you won't have the benefits of the more accurate sensors (so basically the same experience as Google glass, but with better lenses, I guess. apparently people have figured out that you can activate buttons without removing your phone by using magnets.

As for accents, here in the US, there quite the variety depending on region, usually. I have the "tv" accent in what I describe as no accent, lol. My wife is southern, but she's been around be long enough that much of her accent is diminished.

It's the same everywhere, I believe, where you can tell what part of the country they are from by their accent and speech patterns.

Ya there's 2 settings for size. One for the note 5 and edge plus and another notch for the s6 and edge which are slightly smaller.

I feel many US accents are closer to UK accents than their own US counterparts. The difference between Cajun Louisiana and Minnesota, not that far away by comparison, but a world of difference, doesn't even sound like the same language.

Ok, having had my Oculus gearVR for a few days i've got to say I am sold! Well, I already was, but damn if it isn't awesome :D

It really does come down to software. I will say this- simply placing you into even a simple game in vr is amazing.

I downloaded (for free!) The VR version of "Smash Hit" and it was, on a base level, 100 times more compelling than it's traditional counterpart. It reall demonstrates how much VR adds to a game that plays almost exactly the same.

Just being able to turn your head and be IN it. Amazing. Plain and simple. I was literally flinching and trying to dodge the half destroyed obsticles as I flew by them. It was crazy looking down and seeing all the balls and bits hitting the floor 20+ feet below.

Lucid Rifter , if you haven't tried it, you need to. Shocked the hell out of me... In a good way!

I did try it out and it was really cool. Give proton pulse a whirl, that's a ton of fun as well if you liked smash hit. :)

Very fun article describing someone taking the gearVR to their Christmas events.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/sharing-vr-with-family-christmas,30825.html

I myself took the gearVR to my Dads for Thanksgiving. It was quite funny watching my Dad in VR grabbing at things and laughing hysterically. Some family members were hesitant until they actually wore it. They all said how silly people look with it on, but the sheer glee when they tried it made them an instant believer.

That's the thing with VR, it really needs to be tried to understand. It is religion of first touch. Just to think, the gearVR is such an inferior experience to playing Elite Dangerous with a HOTAS on the Rift and a beast PC even now. I mean, you can see your hands moving the throttle or stick and even lean in on the controls or navigation menus. I haven't tried touch/vive but know it's going to be awesome.

I love my gear vr. Its pretty awesome to watch Top Gear on a hundred inch screen while taking a s*** :D

I took the plunge and should have a headset tomorrow. I will have to work a deal with my boy to borrow his phone and I'll let him use my Gear VR.

OK, so we've played with the Gear VR now for a couple days and it really is a mind-blowing experience. I love the NetFlix setup and can see myself watching movies with it for a really nice experience. The videos that place you in Times Square, Tokyo, riding a sufboard, or soaring through the sky is something you just have to see to truly understand how cool it is. I look forward to taking tours all over the world to experience sights and sounds from places I would never visit otherwise. The utility of this as a trip advisor is huge.

I haven't spent too much time with the games as it seems they would be best with a controller. I saw a youtube video saying you can use a Wiimote so I am going to look further into that. I did play some Temple Run and it was really cool "being" the player. I was surprised by the number of games available but without playing them I don't know how much depth any of them may have, I am guessing they are more like demos than full blown experiences.

I didn't really see much downside, no issues with FOV or anything I would say was screendoor effects. Control of selecting stuff was my biggest issue as there is no standard across the board so it was a learning issue with each type of app. Maybe a controller will help with this. For the price, I am extremely happy with the purchase and it makes me wonder how much better Oculus could be for 6 times the cost. I also got Google cardboard a couple weeks ago and while that gives you a glimpse of how VR works, this Gear VR unit takes it to a more immersive level that I look forward to utilizing far more often. All the cardboard apps also work with Gear VR so I'm good to go until Oculus arrives.

Spent a decent amount of time in the social app last night. Even though avatars were generic, it did feel like there was other people in my space. Really cool except content isn't there yet. Just generic vimeo browsing with no search function and same with twitch.

This is an alpha version so I expect more functionality and content in the future. Was nice meeting random people but conversation can get stale with lack of content. That or I'm just boring, haha.

You can view 360 YouTube videos in the alpha browser. So this would work.
Alpha Browser? Where is that? I don't remember seeing it in the store. I could have missed it though. I've really wanted to get Youtube in there.

You need to select all apps when in oculus store and find it there. I think there's also a search function now too. They didnt make it easily accessible as its still in an early state. Check it out, it's pretty cool.

Some cool hidden features for the Gear VR in this video.

THe seat switching is cool, but the Google cardboard thing not so much. The plug bracket does not hold that side in all the way so I have to press and hold it in myself on that side. It doesn't really matter though, as the Google Cardboard stuff is inferior due to not having access to the Gear's more advanced movement tracking tech.

Still, if you want to do the Cardboard apps, you can just get an app disabler from the playstore and disable the GearVR program. This allows you to plug it in, and have the side button work instead of needing to use a magnet (which kinda sucks to use, not to mention makes me nervous).

You can watch youtube through the Samsung browser app for the GearVR as well. You can search with voice, which works very well.

I have a Samsung TV, so it's nice to know it has built in screen mirroring

I haven't tried the 3d movies yet, but all you have to do to watch a movie you downloaded to your phone, is to put it where the videos you take on your phone are. easy. It shows up under MY Videos in the cinema.

The way he plugged his phone in without actually clicking it in for cardboard use didn't fill me with confidence either. On top of the risk of the phone falling out, the way the phone jack was pulled back over the phone looked like it could damage it with prolonged use.
Great to know there's an app to disable the Gear VR program, that's definitely a better way to implement the Cardboard app.

Yeah, it definitely won't hold the Note 5 in securely. It's worth noting that he is using the Note 4, and the innovator version of the GearVR. The App disabler I have is really easy to use as well. It's called Package Disabler Pro.
