Official Thread Gears 4 **NO SPOILERS**

Certain people do realize that Black Tusk has been the home for Gears for a while now right? That was happening regardless of the name. That's all this is, a name change more in line with their purpose.

Anyways, I'll just take a new Gears game.

This is patently false.

Black Tusk Studios

The studio changed its name in November 2012 and was tasked with creating a major franchise for Microsoft to rival their popular Halo franchise.

On January 27, 2014 (year and a half ago) in a statement by Microsoft it was announced that they had acquired the Gears of War franchise from Epic Games. Along with the news that Black Tusk Studios would be responsible for developing new games in the series. As part of the Gears of War acquisition, Microsoft also hired Rod Fergusson, who was the executive producer and director of production on the first three Gears of War games at Epic, to oversee Gears of War development at Black Tusk.[3] It's unknown what happened to the new franchise that the studio was developing before Gears of War acquisition.

As of March 10, 2014 Black Tusk Studios is now operating the official Gears of War Twitter and Facebook accounts. [4] Black Tusk Studios is currently working on their forums similar to that of the Epic Games forums. It is still in development but will possibly be up in a few weeks but no specific date has been announced yet.

On April 16, 2014 Black Tusk started the Gears of War BETA Forums.

On October 23, 2014 it was announced that their take on the Gears of War setting would not be a reboot, but would aim to be a return to the series's roots.

That looks patently true as f***.

I guess it's all relative. I knew MS forced them to do Gears as soon as they bought the franchise last year but I think Black Tusk was around for a bit prior to that. So long that (at the time of the Gears purchase) I thought they might be ready to reveal what they're working on.

Yeah, you can't form an opinion from four high quality games versus vaporware guys! Geez, the gall of some people!

I assumed he was comparing it to the new Gears which we know nothing about vs a game we will never know anything about. That might not have been a fair assumption. Comparing it to the original trilogy than yes it probably wouldn't have been as good but that doesn't mean the new Gears will automatically be on the same level in terms of quality.

While there is truth to that, Gears has a solid track record and has been a quality franchise throughout. It's universe has its own identity, and many of those working on the new one one have worked in previous installments.

A new ip doesn't carry the same expectation though it may sound more exciting on paper. It could have been amazing, or not. The vibe I got from the cgi trailer was far more derivative than inspired. Thus, my lack of s***s given about trading it for Gears.

I don't really understand how you can spin this into a good thing. I mean sure I enjoyed gears back in the day and I will probably play a new one but do we really need another dev tied to only making gears games. We know this is what this means unless ms gets pressured.

I also didn't realize name call8ng and trolling was allowed now.

Depends on your perspective.

I am a huge Gears fan. So, if they stay faithful to the Series but bring something fresh, then this news is the best news I have heard all gen.

We don't know they will only make gears games.

If they do they might not all be the same genre.

Name calling isn't needed

Fan boy wars aren't needed

Remember when gaming was about having fun?

Lets wait and see some actual gameplay now.

It's a good thing as long as the top people working at the company are on board with the decision and they aren't forced to churn out Gears of War so regularly that all of them and all of us get burned out with the franchise.

It's not like they are MS's only studio making exclusive games.

Internet has spoken, so you must be wrong.

Still Gears, and Gears is evil. So, meh.

Name calling isn't needed
The internet was created for such things

Fan boy wars aren't needed
War, that is all there is.

Come on Gramps, you really showing your age, now.

Patience! patience does not exist in the digital world.

f*** all of ya, I could use some new Gears every two years for sure. Just give the formula some genre variety. TF2 style Gears, RPG style Gears, RTS style Gears, a simulation game where you try to put on COG armor, and how about a Gears racing game while we're at it. f***, why not Halo vs Gears? Spartans vs COGs! My mouth is starting salivate!

If you didn't know Black Tusk was making the next Gears then you've been living under a rock. And you're not even a fan of the franchise, let alone the console it's played on so nobody would expect you to know anything about it.

The Coalition, formerly known as Black Tusk, worked on a new IP for Microsoft before it became the Gears of War studio.

Before The Coalition studio got its name, it used to be called Black Tusk and was working on an new in-house IP. We never saw what that game was, save for the E3 2013 teaser, but that doesn’t mean the studio wasn’t already hard at work at it before everything had to be thrown away to make room for Gears of War after Microsoft had acquired the franchise rights.

As part of a big feature on The Coalition on Polygon, the studio shared some insight into how it all went down. According to studio manager Mike Crump, the studio was faced with a choice: continue working on the new IP, or work on a new entry in the Gears of War franchise.

“Microsoft was in discussions with Epic. We were hugely invested in what we were working on. You don’t spend a year and a half working on a game without getting attached to it. There was a lot of discussion,” said Crump, adding that the decision wasn’t easy.

“I’d be lying if I said there weren’t some people on the team who were disappointed when they found out the thing they’d been working on for so long was going to be shelved.

“If you’ve been in the game industry long enough, you’re going to go through project cancellations. People go through this period of mourning a bit. You have to give them that space and time to go through that, the sense of loss that people have around something they’re invested in.”

The final decision was a “no-brainer,” according to Crump. “We went around the table and everybody was in favor of going for Gears of War,” he added.

Gears of War 4 will the studio’s first game, not counting the Gears of War remaster.

No surprise that that is their takeaway from a really good article I guess...:meh:

If thy would have stayed black tusk they could still have finished the other game after gears...

Wow, nice agenda peice, lol. That is a very poor representation of what the real article said. A great example of how you can use factual info and direct quotes to misrepresent actual events.

They (in the Polygon article) also mention that they didn't even have a vertical slice made yet. After, I think it said, a year and a half of pre-production. Yeah. Regardless, the team made the decision to take on Gears, not MS. Rod Ferguson was brought on immediately following the decision.

The Polygon (not this clickbait bulls***) article is great, I encourage everyone to read it.

Here is a nice little breakdown of the E3 demo for Gears 4
I didn't even notice that when the glowing goo gets on his armor, it kills his lights- on the armor and his weapon. As soon as it fades away, his lights come back on... Interesting. Will this have an effect on gameplay? Get some goo on you and you lose visibility? Maybe it has an EMP effect? Nice detail regardless.

Yeah I watched that one a few days ago. Dying to know more about the story of 4. All I know is that it does take place after the Locust show up as evident by the Lancer Mk2 guns. (Before the Locust the Lancer had a standard bayonet. The chainsaw was made especially for chewing up locust hides..)

What do you think about how the dude could be Marcus and Anya's son? Maybe the Girl is Baird and Sam's kid, lol.

Could go either way! The girl could be the offspring of Marcus and Anya or the Guy could be Baird and Sam's kid too. Too early to tell.

They may not even be related at all. I am interested in the fact that they seem to be going back to more of an action horror them like Gears 1 and less of a huge spectacle like Gears 2/3 were which is great news to me. I liked Gears 2/3 but Gears 1 was great because it was also scary at parts.

Horrible narration.
